I wanted to add one thing. You said my ratings are "far too high" but i'd say mine and yours are not all that different. Most of them deviate by about 1 point or are just the same. Others (like 9s) are different because we use slightly different philosophies while rating, even though we might feel about the same about the anime or enjoyed about as much.

You may think that no anime is perfect and therefore there probably isn't anime that should be a 10/10. I see it differently - i don't think an anime has to be perfect/flawless to earn 10/10, at some point i think it is just "great enough" to deserve a 10. It is an anime that stands out among other great anime as an even greater one. It is usually one that is great/excellent in most of its aspects and goals it is trying to accomplish. And in my mind its a scale that anime (that is never perfect) meant to be measured with. Besides i think most people rate anime like that, and i think its quite reasonable to rate in a similar approach as most people do (not just anime).
An example is Game of Thrones - it has 9.5 rating on imdb with 900k votes. It is really not perfect (i've read the books), but it really is one of the best (or the best) shows ever made, scoring it 10 is very appropriate. There really is no other way to demonstrate that its much better than other great shows, while scoring.

When it comes to anime there could be several great shows that one finds is a 9/10, so i think its reasonable and appropriate to rate a show 10/10 if you think that it is significantly better than the shows you have rated 9/10.
Also like i mentioned before, in case if you think its like 9.5 or 9.8 in your mind, does one round it up or down? If one was to demonstrate its more than a 9 - then 10 is the appropriate choice.

I admit many of my ratings are a little generous and at this point a 6 score would be a stain on my list, heh. But i attribute that to the fact that when i watch an anime i watch it for enjoyment/entertainment and i try to enjoy every aspect it tries to appeal to me with. I try to not overanalyze and mostly (but not only) rate my enjoyment of it. I'm also picky enough that i don't choose "bad" anime that no one else enjoys and find redeeming qualities in most anime I've watched, be it art, VO or ost. And i can enjoy pretty much any genre it throws at me, and if i don't think I'd enjoy it, i don't watch it - that's why i pretty much have no sports anime.

Either way I don't write reviews or articles so i don't feel like I have to be objective or rate it too accurately (or dont have the responsibility to do so), and I also may have given extra point or two to some anime for all the 1-3 ratings other people have given them unfairly in a hopeless effort to perhaps "balance" the score. And i usually round up anime that i think is 7.5 (or other +0.5 numbers) in my mind. Also, I pretty much don't rate anime before I've watched it.

Although if I had to redo ratings, i still don't think I'd change it down by more than 1-2 points. And at this point I think I'd stand by most of my current 9s and 10s and keep most of them the same.

Thanks for the comment :)

I am perplexed by your comment. All reviews of entertainment are "biased" because, unless you're talking highly specific technical animation?sound quality, you can only say how much you personally enjoyed it. Yes I do know why "we" watch anime. When it doesn't work as entertainment though I am left disappointed. I recommend perhaps reading a few more of my positive reviews instead. I have written a number of them

Yeah I realize that now.. Anyways I've been watching anime regularly for less than 2 years so I guess I just have to give it time! my school gets off at 5 most days and its a pretty long drive so its hard to squeeze anime in. But hey, there's summer :)

It's not terrible, I guess. But it's rushed as hell, the conclusion is completely nonsensical and most of the dialogue - to me, at least - was just filler to get to the next well-animated fight scene. I dug the concepts of the show a lot more than the actual execution, to make it short.

I said it was schlock - which basically translates to "trashy, yet very much pleasing". I came to Elfen Lied for the T&A and the gore, I got the T&A and the gore, plus some nice character moments (though the dialogue and the overly convenient storyline was not impressing, to say the least) and a few kickass fights. It didn't even go into the show back then in the early 2000s waiting to get some next-level high art, I just wanted to see it because my friend told me it had tits and blood in it :D

I haven't seen it in ages, though. It wasn't even on my list for some reason until you brought it up to me :D Tell you what, I'll give it a rewatch in the near future and I'll let you know what I think. Maybe there's more to it than what teen me liked about it.
