20+ shows are just as common as they used to be. But there's a reason why Angel Beats feels unfinished. It was supposed to be 24 episodes long but they ran out of money half way through and had to settle with 12.

The root of most of the shows problems is most likely the length. The poorly developed romance, the erratic pacing, the lack of screentime for most of the cast, all of them could have been easily fixed if it was about 10 or 12 episodes longer.

If they had more time to develop the story and the characters, they could have planned out everything better too. They could also avoid the gaping plot holes and create a generally better written story. But the fact remains that they didn't get that time. So there's really no way of determining how good it could have been.

SAO is a shitty show with a shitty fanbase, but if you honestly think it's the worst thing ever you're in for a shock when you realise how much worse it can get.

Angel Beats really isn't that much better. It has a much better setup and some good side characters but it's got similar horrible pacing, similar poorly written melodrama, a similar plot hole ridden ending and similarly unbelievable romance.

L, while entertaining, was a pretty damn flat character--along with the rest of the cast. Except for Light. But Light's development sucked in that he acquired his god complex in the very first episode, when it would've made more sense and been better writing if he had developed it over the course of the show.

They just scratched the surface of developing L right before they abruptly killed him off.

And of course, the last third of the show... holy shit.
