Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster
add

Both made by Hideaki Anno, mechs vs aliens, huge amount of attention to detail and science, setting up a tight and believable story with human characters and realistic moral conundrums. Eva is darker/deeper, though Gunbuster has spectacular tits. Take that as you will.

Aku no Hana

Wonderful coming-of-ages narratives, exploring sexual awakening, what it means to be 'normal' and the dark underpinnings of a young mind. Mature themes conveyed via powerful art and very nuanced characters and writing. Shit happens, but life goes on. Masterpieces of their genre.

Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo
add

Romantic comedies, with the same 'let's grab dem chicks' rythm to them. Kami nomi requires some effort to get through all of the seasons, while Yamada-kun has a simpler and tighter narrative where everything is pretty much resolved by the end. Likeable casts with, uh, quite unusual leads. Drama/silliness are balanced well, and both have solid scores to back them up. Good stuff.

Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata
add

Comparable snappy dialogs and character archetypes, Saekano tries to ape Monogatari quite hard. While not as fascinating or unique, it still shows bits of clever writing and pretty animation. Unfortunately it seems to be satisfied with just that, lacking the oomph to truly stand out on its own. If you enjoyed Bakemonogatari's pacing and atmosphere, Saekano hits close to home. Check it out!

Plastic Memories
add

If you strip Plastic Memories of its *cough, pointless, cough* sci-fi setting, it basically tells a lighter, shorter version of Your Lie in April's story. How a very delicate relationship affects hopes and dreams, and the path you end up choosing for your life. Huge feels for both, and themes explored are similar. 99% chance of crying.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
add

Sad and atmospheric, MM and Eva seem to tackle similar themes (loneliness, friendship, religion) while sharing the same sense of 'weight' to everything that happens on screen. While premises are as distant as they come, Madoka's pacing and narrative structure remind me a lot of Eva. Deep characterization, very peculiar use of framing and lighting to convey emotions and relationships, interesting symbolism that warrants rewatch value for both. What's not to love?

No Game No Life
add

While pacing feels very different (Log Horizon relies on a slow buildup to flesh out its world and characters, NGNL moves at breakneck speed), the core aspects are similar: light-hearted tone, emphasis on overcoming challenges by strategizing and planning ahead, gaming-oriented lore and rules. Both are highly recommended if you enjoy tactics and brains over brawn types of shows.
