Planning to watch Honey & Clover? EXCELLENT CHOICE, genuinely one of my favourite anime series ever. Probably my no.3 overall!
SelfRevolution Apr 18, 2009 4:50 AM
Nah, it doesn't sound random man, to be honest it's the sensible thing to do. I just wish I could focus on my exams for once, I've always left revision til the very last minute =S. Good luck with the exams in Summer anyway, hope they all go well for ya, let me know how you get on.

As always it's cool about the anime help/ recommendations, just glad you've enjoyed the ones I've recommended.

Most likely speak to ya on Lastfm or Facebook or something before long, but speak to ya soon anyway man.

Yeah one of the points of Raki (not ruki ^_^) Suta is that there's no plot, it's part of the slice of life genre therefore there's no plot and no real continuation from episode to episode, all series in this genre are episodic. If you prefer series with a strict plot like that it again cuts down what I can recommend you. And BAH you thought melodies was cynical (although I can see why, I knew it was more downcast than memories as it was), but predictable? I dunno about that. Again with Haruhi that was partly slice of life which is why for part of it there was little to no plot or plot continuation. What I'd say is if you see an anime on MAL with the slice of life tag steer clear of it if the lack of plot isn't something you like.

Anyway, going by what I've read and typed I'd say Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien may well be your cup of tea, it's very much plot driven, is romance/ drama and I wouldn't say it's downcast or cynical at all. So yar maybe put LS on hold for now and go for KGNE or even Full Metal Panic! if you haven't seen that cause that show is comedy with a hint of romance and it's bloody hilarious at times (especially it's side story which you should watch after called Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu). But yeah, I started you off more or less at the top with Air, Clannad and that in terms of my own favourite shows so it'll be tough to find shows that rival them, but I'm sure there are some out there, maybe even some on my list but we'll find them.
SelfRevolution Apr 13, 2009 9:24 AM
Yo man, what do you make of LS so far, any good? Also see you've finished melodies, did you reckon it was better than memories, or about the same? Guess you figured out the Haruhi order in the end too seeing how you finished that, how'd you find the series?

Gah, I guess ef can seem a tad on the negative side at times, but again that's one of the reasons I liked it cause in life many people aren't happy, nine times out of ten even the happiest of romances has it's negative parts. It was that mix that was in ef that I liked. Just so you know, the manga guy was Hirono Hiro.

I can definitely see where you're coming from saying about happier, fluffy type romances are better to watch, and in all honesty a while ago I'd have agreed with you 100%, but over the past few years it just reminds me of everything else out there: your average chick flick, standard romance animes etc... it really takes something that's much better executed to catch my eye as a standard romance. Watching the happier type ones has a positive effect on the viewer as well I find, it makes them feel slightly better and that which is one of the reasons I think they're more popular.

I think personally that type of romance has just lost it's effect on me, I find the majority of them so bland and boring, but that's not to say I only like negative shows (although I find they are my preference). It's strange really, one thing I really dislike about myself is that I'm a negative and often cynical person looking at the worst situations, which makes me want to be more positive in everything even with the anime I watch, and yet I find myself drawn to the more negative shows like a magnet. I guess it's like I said before I find their more unpredictable nature, realism and the like much more interesting. In a way I agree with you that I wish negativity didn't mean realism, ideally things would be positive and realistic, that'd be great.

Anyway, I'll stop my rant about my own preferences in anime and shows in general. It's cool that you prefer the happier stuff though man, y'know everyone has their own tastes and preferences, although this does mean the anime I can recommend to you and you'll enjoy more are quite a bit more limited. Even so I'd still recommend ef's second season, it's more downcast than the first I think but fuck did it blow me away, in my eyes it was nothing short of awesome. Otherwise yeah, just comment or message me as and when you want recommendations as I've still got a quite a lot of stuff that'll be to your liking. I'll stop typing now as you're surely bored or at least tired of reading (I have a habit of doing this =S), anyway ENJOY HARUHI!!
SelfRevolution Apr 2, 2009 7:48 PM
Woah man, you thought ef was only worthy of a 6!? Was it really only above average for you =S?... I actually preferred the more downcast atmosphere of ef, the negative views expressed by characters seemed far more real and believable to me. But yeah, I reckon the second season is the better of the two so I'd recommend watching that soon. Anyway, enjoy Haruhi!! Since you've only watched one episode that should've been the confusing episode 0 in episode order which is 'The Adventures Of Mikuru Asahina'. You should also know that episode won't make sense for another 10 episodes and that it's not much like the rest of the series.
SelfRevolution Mar 31, 2009 4:46 AM
Haha, it's no problem man, cause I've already watched so much anime I know where to look for most of the info or have it ready in my head anyway, and since a lot of what you're watching right now is going on my recommendations it's easy enough. Also see you've started ef's first season =D awesome stuff!

I think I'm the odd one out on Akinator, for two of my friends on here it's been really accurate like getting 3 or 4 out of every 5 or something. I guess it's different for me cause many of my favourite shows are quite far from being super popular.
SelfRevolution Mar 31, 2009 4:42 AM
Ooh in that case I may have already finished NANA when you start it again, I'll let you know if it changes themes much if I do.
SelfRevolution Mar 31, 2009 4:40 AM
Oh Akinator, I've tried that several times, usually gets somewhere between 1/5 and 1/10 right for me, although I've gone over 10 without a right answer before.
SelfRevolution Mar 31, 2009 4:38 AM
For when you watch Haruhi:

You'l need to check the episode order there cause in Japan it was broadcast in a strange order, there are three orders you can watch it in known as 'Haruhi', 'DVD' and 'Kyon' order (Haruhi and Kyon are two of the main characters and sort of follows things from their point of view). For your first time watching though I'd suggest DVD or Haruhi order since they're chronological.

Planning to watch Lucky Star, is that cause it's by KyoAni? I'm really not sure that'll be your cup of tea, it's very much in the slice of life genre, no drama, no romance at all, plus quite a bit of the comedy relies on the fact that you can understand the many references and parodies of other anime. If you do decide to watch it soon though it's more or less a law that you need to have seen 'The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya' since that's parodied LOADS. Knowing lots of the parodies is literally half the fun of watching Lucky Star.
SelfRevolution Mar 30, 2009 10:20 AM
I think in NANA the romance and the like builds up or comes later in the anime (dunno how much later though). And ooh, you say it's more realistic, I'm way more interested now (cause I much prefer that to the moe, massive eye type style). Does that mean it's on to ef memories for you now?

Also, what kind of things did NANA episode 1 cover, like what went on?
SelfRevolution Mar 30, 2009 10:07 AM
Woah man, you dropped NANA after 1 episode, was it really that bad? Also, you've still got AS as watching when you've completed it ^_^.

the girl*

Yeah, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha isn't even a romance type anime, it's a magical girl thing which is ok for kids to watch so it wouldn't be allowed to have anything even hinting at hentai ^_^. I'm more or less with you when you say you're not that keen on anime going past a kiss.
