Man, i really need to watch that 2nd GIG again. My shitty brain has already forgotten lots of it.
I just remember loving the Saito/Paz episodes a lot.
but yeah, definitely one of my favorites as well.
I think the new Arise broadcast is just the movies + one new story or something.
Honestly, i'd recommend you check out Solid State Society first, since that one is set in the Stand Alone Complex timeline. It's basically 3rd GIG, except only movie length.
Also, the second Oshii movie, Innocence is definitely worth a watch as well. Especially if you like Togusa and Batou. Even if the dialogue is a bit too quote-y.
Arise is alright, but i'd still say it's the weakest entry in the GitS franchise.

2nd GIG is just as good, as far as i'm concerned. I loved how some of the less important members of Section 9 get dedicated episodes in the second season. Look forward to that.

Not to hype you up prematurely or anything, but if i had to chose an all-time favorite anime series, SAC (and the second season as well) would probably get the spot.
It is different from the movie in a way though, the entire atmosphere is a slight bit more light hearted and closer to the manga actually.
Hope you check out dat Stand Alone Complex eventually.
