Hi there!
My name is Stefan, and I'm from Germany.
I've been an Anime fan since the 90's (with interruptions), but I just got into reading Manga a short while ago.
The first Anime that I recognized as such was "Shin Taketori Monogatari: 1000-nen Joou", and that left a great impression on me, because it was just so different from the cartoons I usually watched back then as a kid in the early 90's.
More and more shows aired during the 90's, and I was watching most of them. Though I have never been into Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh and that kind of stuff, so I skipped these. But unfortunately, fewer and fewer shows were aired later on in the 00's, except some rare Anime nights with mostly subbed Seinen shows. And so I kind of lost my interest due to lack of input.
But since about the middle of the 10's, some new shows were aired, although the timeslots changed from afternoon to midnight, and the subjects changed to not suitable for small children. So I got more and more into it again.
And finally, I discovered streaming. Yay, how lucky I was, CR and Prime offer quite a lot of stuff (although still many of the shows that are available in the US are missing in Germany, sadly...).
Since then, I've become more the binge-watching type. If I find a show interesting, I can't wait until next week to see the next episode. Instead, I wait till the series ends, and then I watch in sessions of 3 or 6 episodes at once, or mostly go all the way through at once. The same goes with older series as well.
There aren't many shows available in German dub, but somehow I prefer Japanese with English sub anyway. I like the sound of Japanese language a lot, although I only understand some very basic stuff.
Normally, dubs lose some information like title suffixes, or they are awkwardly pronounced. And I think, the voices rarely fit the characters, be it in pitch or tone.
Most shows are only available subbed anyways, but here I prefer English over German. This is because at least on CR, many subs are translated in a very creative way, but I want to know what is really said instead of what is even funnier than what was really said.
I'm open to nearly all genre of Anime (well, except perhaps BL), and don't mind watching even genres unknown or new to me. I have seen some shows that I would have never even considered watching as a live action series, but I was so being drawn into that I was happy I gave it a try.
But I must admit, somehow I always get drawn back to the Ecchi genre, not for training my right hand, but for the fun (yes they are fun, if you have the fitting sense of humour...).
Regarding Manga, I've tried to read some in magazines before several years ago, but I just couldn't quite stick to them.
But recently, just by chance, I started reading some Manga again, and it really got me.
I read Nisekoi all the way through in about 3 days, I just could't stop anymore.
So maybe it's the same issue as with Anime, I just need to read all at once, instead of just some pages/chapters and then wait until the next issue, or a bit here, a bit there.
I think this maximizes the immersion, and creates an overwhelming atmosphere that drags you right into the story...
I wouldn't call myself an Otaku, because I don't collect any figurines or limited boxes, don't cosplay, and I also read other books and watch live action movies and series. So Anime is just a hobby, but a very important one.
My ratings are based on my personal enjoyment and impression only. I am no literary critic or film critic, so I don't vote like I pretended to be one.
So if a (in my opinion) wonderful show has a very bad OP or ED, I just skip it and that's it, it still remains wonderful for me (I don't care that much about them anyways, normally).
If the background or character drawings are simple, that mostly won't change my score, but if it is horribly crappy, it will definitely.
Most important for me is the plot, be it funny, romantic, action, horror, gore, psycho, serious, hilarious, ecchi, lewd or whatever.
And they are kind of genre-specific.
Even a Hentai can get a very good rating from me, if it has a more interesting plot (actual plot, not "plot") than just "bone 'em all" and "bring dem tentacles in".
Sometimes I even watch a show just because of the bad ratings or reviews, if I find the summary interesting, just so see if it's really that bad, or if I eventually found an underrated "hidden gem", which happens from time to time.
Hmm, that's it for now I think.
Please feel free to contact me, I'm always interested in conversations with others sharing the same interests.
