Well, well, well. Someone recommended me this and I gotta say that watching it 5 years later after airing it giave me a better perspective on how this type of mc and story have become popular in the last 5 to 8 years. Basically and short, this anime is Kirito on steroids saving the day while taking the viewer for a fool. And seeing all the people who love this series, oh boy, it fooled quite a lot of them.
I mainly agree with most negative reviews that point the negative stuff: the repetition of the same story in the 3 arcs, the utterly boring characters,

the op mc without any kind of bound or true challenge, the unsufferable and neverending technobabble, the already decades old and beaten to death high school setting and japanese elitism... You can read those reviews to know my opinion on those particular cases. I just wanted to tell you my feelings while watching this.
The first thing it came to my mind while I was watching it was it is a sort of Kyoukai Senjo no Horizon for good guys™ who need comfort from this savage and unforgiving world that doesn't understand them. Both have an expansive universe, an op mc, lots of side characters, technobabble, side stories, arcs... The thing is while Horizon is treated like a proper story with its sucesion of events, characters and cliffhangers, and all of them serve to the ultimate purpose of giving the viewer a good ride, Mahoka just has in mind one thing, and only just one thing: show to the watcher how awesome the mc is.
Everything is set for the True One Tatsuya. And He is for you: the good guy™ viewer, who might take his blank slate character and self insert into the greatness of Him. You are the True One, the perfect, the cold because wounded good guy™ and every woman you know will try to throw themselves to you, the Perfect, but will deny and then slutshame them because you can't fall that low. No matter what kind of peril will cross your path, Terrorists, genocidal high schoolers, Chinese cardboard baddies (because, of course, the chinese are bad and you are from the Land of the Rising Sun, which has perfected the best magic in the world), you will prevail with you absolute Perfection.
No matter what you try you will master it: you will see through walls, design ultra complicated magical weaponry that would make all magical engineers from the world cry from jealousy, solve the magical ecuation for flying that no mage in thousands of years of magic artistry could do, which for some reason no one could do before resurrecting the dead. And I mean true resurrection, no necromancy and rotten zombies or skeletons. Sounds strange, but I suppose if you could have solved the mystery of true resurrection that either would put in the shoes of Jesus, which is too much of a blasphemy even for you, the Perfect One, or maybe it would sound vile because resurrection also evokes bad things like defying the natural order of the universe, and you can't do that because that would make you an heretic. And you are Perfect, you can't have a bad reputation. Resurrection was done by some shady mage who wanted to jerk off to dead idols and the japanese army happened to find this, so they decided to put it on practice and of course they gave it to you, because you are Perfect and never would use that to jerk off to dead idols. That would result in resurrecting them, rejecting them and finally slutshaming them, and sounds to much work for nothing.
Sarcasm is the only thing that made me cope with this, I'm sorry for that, but this is one of the few times in my hobby that I felt I wasted time ending this and expecting something good because people keep recommending it, so I'm kind of bitter about it. It shows how low have fallen the stardards of the audience and that's the reason why these kind of stories keep popping up like mushrooms in autumn. Oh well. At least this will be my punching bag of anime for probably the rest of my life and hell take me if I stop from exsanguinating it for giggles, because mockery is the only thing it deserves.
TLDR; this anime is just self inserting crap that tries to make itself grandiose. If someone says you have to read the novels to truly appreciate it just point them out the fact that you having to go for an external source to know better is a demonstration of how bad this anime is, because it failed in being a self contained piece of media.

A story told from the villain's side, something not usually done. I didn't know the source material but I had high hopes for this manga since is rare to see a something like this. But as chapters were released my interest plummeted pretty quickly.
The plot is linear, most of the chapters consist of the mc tricking girls into sex to turn them in cumdumpsters, being a sadistic fuck and boasting how powerful he is, rinse and repeat. Using smut should be an additive to a story like this not the other way around. Characters are not better than the ones from an hentai manga, even the ... |
