This series was so not what I wanted, I wanted more of the OVA, but what made the OVA work is that it cut a lot of the dumb comedy and talking, this series was given too much space and too family friendly a rating.
A series like this should be high action, sex appeal, and violence, it should be a call back to the 80s but it just couldnt pull it off with its rating.
Being closer to the manga was the real killer though, too much comedy, too much dumb jokey bullcrap to make it feel metal or epic in the way it handles things
...
and every fight becomes:
Man 1: i use my ultimate thunder wave
man 2: not his ultimate thunder wave thats his strongest attack.
woman: did you say...his ultimate thunder wave, he hasent ever used that,
man 2 again: yea the ultimate attack that destroyed....
so on and so on for like half the attacks in the show. the series needed more room then the OVA, but it needed one season for all the content not 2.

So i checked out when the pacing ramped up, the show feels like it went from a parody of sentai shounen type shows to just being one.
Mutiple arcs set in schools.
Super powers that end major fights in seconds.
Faceless nobodies killed in droves while semi main characters can have holes shot in them only to stand up and win against great odds.
The tension has vanished, all thats left is spectacle and fake stakes that wont really matter.
Suddenly anyone with a beam sword can stand up against bosses just because they have a funny haircut and a name.
The plot is thin and the plot armor is thick,
...
and the interesting story of a monster against a big unstoppable force gave way to the same end of the world plotting that youd see in power rangers.

So, I thought this series was pretty neat, I won't get deep into why that was, that's not why im writing this.
I am writing this to outline the major issue, that while some might call minor, that made me drop this series like a rock.
Simply put, its High school.
Every series lately needs to have High School, and i understand it, it's a big demographic, but the fact is this man, the main character, did not need to be there as a student, he is hundreds of years old, he is a demon hunter, there's no reason for him to be a student other then for
...
tropey demographic pandering.
Make him a teacher, make him a janitor, he is way too grown up to be goofing around in High school classes, this man has seen WW2, he has seen most of his friends die, why is he in highschool as a student?
I understand that it is not a major part of the show, but it tells me the sort of direction the series will go eventually, and it just killed any interest i had.

I was not sure what my next review here would be if i ever wrote one again but this series got me, it was a bit of a roller coaster but in the end i had to step away. The start of the series felt generic but purposefully so in order to enhance the swap to the cyberpunk world, I can appreciate that, stripping the MC of his power and showing him that the world is beyond him was a great move and created an interesting dynamic and i was excited for more.
Sadly this series for all its neat premise and decent visuals cannot
...
stand against the tropes of the times, almost as fast as the MC was shown weak, powerless and lost to the times, he was just as quickly given back high amounts of power, immediate understanding of tech and was thrown into a degree of popularity, what could have been a great series about the demon king learning humility and having to struggle to regain his former powers became a generic series about how awesome he is at everything.
I am saddened by how many shows follow this path, how little the industry seems to appreciate the struggle of the heroes story, he gets his power from faith and his faith is almost instantly given to him, he is a fantasy demon thrown into a tech world but is allowed to instantly understand how the tech works and replicate parts of it, even becoming a streamer, something that in a future world would be bigger and harder to get into is handed to him instantly to facilitate getting his powers back, the show can pretend a lot of time and struggle happened but if it happens off screen in a montage it does not elevate the story it simply waves it away.
It is okay to show struggle, its ok for a character to not understand or be bad at things and it can last longer then one scene, the desire for every series to become a power fantasy just so fans can ogle how awesome the MC is has to die at some point or the poor writing choices that plague it will become the standard, this show could could been what cyberpunk edge-runners was, it could have been an amazing story but in the end it just fell into the pitfalls of easy writing.

There's a lot of shows I've thought about reviewing and i didn't think my first one would be this, it is not my favorite series but when i looked at reviews or comments in some places it made me think and i feel like i need to share my thoughts on this. THIS SHOW IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE GAME!
BUT!
That is ok, this series will be dragged down by how it isnt as good as the game was and i dont disagree but i think more fans should look at the bigger picture, this series was pretty well animated, the voice acting was
...
(at least as far as i could tell) good, the cgi was bad but when isnt it bad? the story covered things in the game in a way that if you did not play the game you could get the majority of the information and a good amount of the impact it was meant to have.
The fact that so much effort was put into this series is a blessing, it wasnt chopped apart into a 6 episode OVA, it was not rushed through into some 12 episode slop, it got as much of an adaptation as any series could ask for and honestly i loved every second of it, fans of the game should support every last bit of this series for what it represents, closure, we got a great series of games that meant a lot to us and an honest, well funded adaptation that brought that same series not only to fans like us but to so many people who may have never seen it and best of all it was a more in depth retelling then most series like this can ever dream of getting. I really enjoyed this series for what it is but even more so for what it represents, a chance for so many games like it to be given an anime series that shows passion for its source.
