Hope you've been making it through your exams okay. Seems we've both been busy recently, we should have a good chat after you're through the gauntlet. I'd say over coffee, but this is the internet, and nobody's invented VR coffee yet

btw don't worry about Madoka movies 1 and 2, they're just recaps.

PS: Finally got to watch The Night is Short, Walk on Girl last night, and it was fantastic. Can't recommend it enough.

Base64, shit my job in cs is in danger now >_<
I haven't played doki doki but watched a couple of gameplays of the starting. Haven't got to the part at which shit goes down.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Was pretty busy over the weekend.

So you're a big fan of Utena, huh? Can't blame you, I could talk about that show for days... But right now I'll stick with how Utena relates to Madoka, because they've got a lot more in common than you might think, and I'm feeling ambitious today.

(spoilered out the rest of this post because it's long. really long.)

Damn. Coming into a show like Madoka as your first magical girl show, with no frame of reference... that's a bad break. Madoka demands that you at least have some idea how "typical" magical girl shows tend to go down, since it spends pretty much its entire run time toying with those expectations & preconceptions, and then blowing them up in your face. I'd compare it to watching Fate/Zero without knowing anything about Fate/stay night. Yeah, it's watchable, and you might enjoy it at a surface level, but you won't be getting nearly as much out of it as you could (and should) be.

Cardcaptor Sakura isn't the best starting point for something like Madoka, though. It isn't a typical magical girl anime itself - it bucks a lot of the genre's conventions. Generic magical girl shows like Sailor Moon and Precure are what Madoka plays off of, but I won't mince words here: Cardcaptor Sakura is better than both.

But if you're set on giving Madoka another try, then get Meguca's Blu-Ray rips of the TV series and Part III: Hangyaku no Monogatari (Rebellion) if you haven't already. Their releases blow everyone else's out of the water - the pair behind the Meguca releases (__ar and 8thsin) were two of the best fansubbers of their time, and it shows.

PS: nothing wrong with shonen if you've moved on from the big three and their copycats. Hell, I'll point out a very promising, non-copycat shonen series for you: Yakusoku no Neverland.

That's... an interesting series of coincidences, there. I've been using this name for about 9 years. It's similar to your last name? ...I can't even imagine what your last name must be then, lol.

Well, if you're still interested in opinions on Cardcaptor Sakura, I can say that I'm enjoying it. There's a ton of obvious filler, but it's fun enough to be forgivable, and the show's concept is like a breath of fresh air considering so many (non-Precure) magical girl series nowadays seem content to just ape Madoka Magica and call it a day.

Haha. I only responded in such an obtuse way since you came in like a bolt from the blue with a mysterious opener and a name/profile like that yourself, so I figured that if you were taking the "I'm the real Monika" angle, I was down to play along. I probably should've dropped some references to the game or something to make it clearer what I was going for, though :/

And yeah, you really made my brain shift into overdrive for a bit, between your name, base64 "about me", and showing up out of the blue like that. It worked... I just dropped the ball on showing I got it.

As for the game, I'm not sure it'd be worth playing through it yourself if you've already seen a full playthrough. I don't think it's the type of game that holds up in that situation, since it's all about surprise factor and subversion of expectations. I suppose it could be worth playing to see everything Monika has to say if you didn't see that in the playthrough you watched - she has like 300+ lines of dialogue in the scene your avatar's from. Unfortunately, most people who get there just delete her ASAP and don't bother to hear her out, which is a shame, because she's really interesting.

...wait, so you actually read my profile AND you saw that recommendation?! I'm not exactly putting myself out there that much on MAL, so how'd you find me?
