And I just wanted to follow you because of the reviews you do, and the fact that you're a fellow Made in Abyss fan.
As for comedies, I think the thing is I only laugh when I'm happy. I don't really get into stuff like Rick & Morty for this reason; it's objectively super clever, but it's so grounded in this unhealthy cynical wasteland that I find it hard to enjoy it. A lot of comedy that's PURE comedy doesn't get to me because of this; if it's just trying to be funny, I'm unfazed. I have to care about what's happening first. Thus, I find myself giddy with fits of mirth with stuff like Toradora and Spice & Wolf, not because the humor is especially brilliant but just because I'm really glad to be laughing along with a story I care about. I think a LOT of comedy, Japanese or Western, doesn't really try to ground its humor in a cohesive story, and that just doesn't super work for me. Like, I'll laugh out loud at individual Gintama clips, but when I try to watch the show, nothing. So of course I take the mature route and just damn it all to hell instead of acknowledging that it's purely personal taste and that there's literally nothing wrong with comedy for comedy's sake.
As for the comedy, that remark is kind of a joke. There are plenty of shows I've laughed out loud at. It just seems to be the case that usually, whenever the community finds a show that is 'particularly hilarious', I can't even manage to force myself through it. I was just sitting there with a stone-cold expression for Konosuba and Nozaki-kun and even Cromartie High even though all I wanted to do was laugh! I think humor more than anything though is a matter of personal preference, so I have nothing against those shows. They just didn't work for me. The shows that aren't fully dedicated comedies actually usually make me laugh way more, with stuff like Toradora! and Kill La Kill getting me rolling on the floor.
The exception of course, as always, is Jojo. Battle Tendancy might be some of the most entertaining TV I've seen in any medium, right up there with season 3 of Community.
I hope I didn't cause you too much trouble, I teach high school and it's been a tough couple of days. I really just wanted to sink my teeth into something and critique the fuck out of it (you can't exactly be brutally honest with the kids) so I picked a fight with Berserk because I saw the chance. I wasn't trying to pick a fight with a person though, so I'm really, deeply sorry if you felt that way!
I do agree with your points about the weird system of MAL's reviews, but I can't really think of a way to make it more accurate. The point of the current system is that anyone can have a voice and I agree with that way of doing things. If you have good reasons/opinions and express them well, you can have your stuff read and be seen by a lot of people. You don't have to be a super analyst or chosen by a committee to make it to the top of the charts, which I believe is the most user-friendly and fair way to do things. I don't necessarily trust every review at the top, but I do take it as what the consensus thinks about an anime. Now, this sounds kinda funny actually (for me at least), but I am aware that I was somewhat responsible for the score having lowered a bit over the course of it's airing. I'm not saying I single handedly did this with my review, but I have seen people giving it 2s and 1s after having read my rant, which if I hadn't done the review they would've probably giving it a 4 or 3. I would be lying if I said I didn't want the score for Eromanga to drop in all honesty, so I ain't complaining. It wasn't a huge drop by any means, but at least I know my points got through and people read what I had to say (which I still haven't seen anyone counter my points successfully).
I also liked OreImo a lot actually. I honestly wouldn't recommend Eromanga to an OreImo fan, as it's obviously of lower quality than OreImo. Everything that made OreImo great, except for the incest, is missing or perverted in Eromanga. I, as a fan of OreImo (at least its second season), hated what Eromanga stands for. I would suggest to pass on Eromanga, but if you're curious then go right ahead and give it a shot. You might end up enjoying it
I actually haven't played the VN but I do know a lot about it. I would totally recommend it cause it goes deeper into the story and different routes than the anime, but I'm not one of those people who puts it above the anime. Imo, there's no better way to emerge yourself into its story than the anime. It's not the same experiencing Steins;Gate with the voice acting, the OST, the animation and all the greatness that makes the anime great.
I apologize for not answering your comment from a while back, I'm a lazy person when it comes to that lol.
What do you mean if I wrote all those things? Of course I did (now that I think about it, it was probably a waste of time talking about such a series lmao). Do you think that I hired a writer or something to write a rant on a pretentious anime site? I'm not particularly against any of those things nor do I condemn anyone who is into that, I just hate how Eromanga implements them and how cheap it baits the people who don't know any better. As far as the score goes, it's mostly a personal thing. I don't rank stuff based on every anime that is on database, only the things that I've seen. So far, Eromanga is one of the worst anime I've seen and the 1/10 is mostly given because of my personal hate towards it. People talk about it because its cheap entertainment and easy to talk about. The amount of forced memes this show has is the explanation as to why it is popular in social media, it's "memeable". The best answer to your doubts is simply this: Eromanga Sensei is like a Michael Bay film, it appeals to the absolute lowest common denominator. It's dumb comedy with dumb characters and dumb fanservice. This may sound pretentious of me, but by appealing to the lowest common denominator it is liked by the people who just want some B- movie guilty pleasure. People talk about it and give it a high score, but they all know it's bad. It may seem ridiculous, but remember it is my opinion and my opinion is no more special than the people who like it. Again, it's exclusively a personal hate towards it and that hate reflects on the score. This is MAL, not a professional site or anything. I don't think it really matters what I or other people give it, what do matters are the reasonings behind each number. Actually, I would say you have a more refined taste than I do. You've seen classics, while my tastes are mainstream and generic(I know it was sarcasm from your part, but you legit have a more respectable taste than I do). I agree with that thought; I hate when people take MAL opinions/scoresand make a huge fucking deal out of it. Nothing done or said in this site matters or will harm anyone, so people just need to mind their own business and respect others opinions (not talking about you, just people in general).
No hards feelings from my part, you seem like a civilized dude that can have a coherent discussion, unlike a lot of the people that trashed me for the review.
