I wasn't intended to write this review on the first place, but after this series suddenly announced to get drama-movie adaptation and top of that the author decided to make the sequel once it got attention again, i decided to do it (probably rant warning but I will try to tone it down as much as possible).
I start this series when I was like... uh high-school but because of a slow progress on the updates and I was find the story fascinating in the beginning, as many reviewers in here stated. But catching up on this manga when I was in my 20s now, I
...
realised how just dumb the mangaka handling the drama between the characters and ruin each development of the characters to the doom. Which is disappointing maybe it just my taste suddenly upgraded when i used to be her fans, or it just mangaka failed to deliver her story to be enjoyable as the beginning of the series.
Story: 3
It's basically my overall judgement. The Idea was actually refreshing about cellphone novelist trying to write love story but she didn't have any experience with it. We also given impression that the mc seems strong because she be able to blackmail popular guy in her class (to be fair the guy is dumb because why would he write a notes about girl who fell for her.. I mean is there any point). The progression goes downhill though. As if author necessarily had to add shoujo cliche with love rivals and possessiveness toward the one they love was actually quite dumb and as if you want to throw common sense get swayed easily of their love rival threat. The next that bother me was the mission suddenly getting more sensual considering that we called it all of the main characters are like junior high school, (sadly they are and this manga got children manga awards too how sad the world we live in). Yes the mc want experience love, but there's other way to make it more suitable for uh kid on these ages. It makes all the blackmailing point (which was very good part) was disappear very quickly and held by a newcomer characters who did control mc instead??. Oh yeah the progression basically put us in a loop for more drama love triangles (pentagon) NTR because they basically didn't learn anything from what's already happened to them. Thank you mangaka for keep copy-paste the drama of these characters which makes some readers left exhausted of your story.
Art: 6
Yeah I'm probably the only one who rate it way too low. But let me tell you a thing since this came from me who follow her art since Gokkun! Pucho (Pixie Pop). Her art has moe element which probably quite eye-catching for some readers, but as people who read most shoujo manga, I find her male character art less attractive than it should be portrayed. The shoulder length was drawn way too small and the inconsistency of drawing progressed (from chapter 30 to end) was suddenly make them looked shrink. (Yeah Shigure slowly become way too shorter). Oh also compare MC boobs from beginning chapter to chapter 7 it unnecessarily get bigger as if targeted toward male reader instead of female readers who read shoujo manga.
Afterall it was my taste preference. If you don't mind moe arts you will enjoy it though.
Character: 3
Ah yes, the major problem of this series when the story driven by the characters themselves.
If I want try to defending, yes they are junior high school, a teenagers that are making mistakes, dumb decision and all but do we had to make it unrealistic and repetitive mistakes.
Sure things mangaka you want to make a complex character but you failed. Let me quote the line you put for yukina in chapter 44.
"I'am just a writer who only cares about the protagonist"
and you know what, you failed too because her character development and her phobia didn't resolved really well. It just BAM done as if the magic spell came "because it's a power of love" bs.
Yukina - As early reviewers said, yeah she used to be cool and decisive but slowly her character swayed way too much into her emotion as she become selfish and indecisive. I would say selfish because she used to never respect both of the guys feelings and use them for the sake of her mission and she never aware of it??? yeah in conclusion this character also is an epitome of bland dense heroine. I mean yes you want to experience love with emotion but how it handled was horrible because how she was introduced as strong character, why can't make her at least never let people put her down. (especially when she's facing Hisame because Hisame is newcomer who just knew about Yukina but she got easily controlled). Oh also she proclaim herself observant toward people so why would she never understand their feeling and make a right decision. dumb right?
Shigure - A male mc who after got rejected lost his certain appeal & screen time (poor him). Shigure strong appeal was actually his tsundere personality toward Yukina. (Which I will tell you I like tsundere, but not annoying tsundere like Shigure because he was immature brat dragging himself not admitting mc's feeling way too long). But in the latter he was almost drastically change too as if he has no personality and just driven by Yukina's attitude towards him. I mean where is his hidden persona that he always carried in the beginning? Confirmed that this mangaka sucks at portraying their main love interest.
Akira - A character who I was having faith on but they shattered my hope into pieces. While I'm sucker at the 2nd love interest, akira may be few of the worst 2nd love interest I have encountered so far. Put aside him being mc cousin, maybe considering his past he was so fixated toward the mc thus he turned out to be quite possessive. What I don't like is when he's semi-rape mc and when he's already in the relationship with her. I don't know why akira suddenly turned out to be forgettable too and has OP development too which is ?? I don't know how to explained but thinking of his character was just exhausting and I don't want him ended up with Mami sadly.
You know who's stayed in character and given a development? Mami (and argruably Hisame)
Yes I can hear many people gonna complain because many people doesn't like Hisame but hear me out.
Mami - Introduced as Yukina's rival, I'm probably the only one who didn't hate her first appearance since she was drawn cute, maybe because how mangaka portrayed her has some kind of yandere-vibe but the way she is try to bully her victim was quite amusing to see using psychological emotion between them rather than typically declare "Shigure is mine!!" I think I fell for her when she started teared up the fact knowing that male mc choose yukina rather than her. Which there's a moment of me reading "man I wish she was the protagonist instead" because her strong love feeling toward her man is what can readers relate (even if probably kinda twisted in the beginning). But seeing all her past, her anxiety and everything make her character much more realistic than the others. And yes Mami, Akira (and other WxxS guys probably) were way too good to deserve a girl like you. You should save yourself. Also even if she's stupid at least she's relatable in terms of emotion lmao.
Hisame - The newcomer character who take all the spotlight of MC basically (because he's should be the character whose personality Yukina should have been - minus the sadistic nature). Yes he's immature brat, yes he's an asshole I admit since (most of my favourite character are problematic somehow). But I think his asshole character was still in low-border maybe because I faced too much sadistic men this still in bearable metre. Hisame is actually can be an interesting character if the mc and the story can handled him better. But poor him he just basically a character device who's being used for mami past trauma and Yukina's indecisive love drama. Oh let me tell you some revelation that Hisame won character poll in japan (and Shigure in in 3rd wow the irony)?? Look at the irony where mangaka have to put priority of the character show the result itself. I would enjoy Hisame any time if he's exist in other series. Also yes he doesn't deserve Mami too she's way too good for you.
Enjoyment & Overall: 4
Yeah in conclusion this manga only great if you really trying to exhaust yourself in the love adventure of 3 main characters who turned to have dumb development and let themselves get spinning of all the love pentagons, instead Mami is should be the one to be saved from this series. It was a guilty pleasure in the beginning but too many uncomfortable ride for inserting semi-smut for the middle-schooler while I'm reading this as an adult. I only recommend her works like Koko ni iru Yo! since it's at least the most better of the amongst all of them.
