I personally think that they love each other, and even if they were different, they still managed to love each other in a romantic sense. Both, however, have moved on with their "lives."

While they technically were incompatible, I still thought Daichi and Akari were very much in love with each other on a romantic level; they just didn't let that love tie them down forever when they became irreparably apart. I guess the incompatibility eased that decision somewhat.
