Just someone who has loved the anime medium since 2013. If counting Ghibli movies, since age 5. May have trash taste, depending on MALers' subjectivity.
What can I say? Anime feels different. While live action media may appeal to far more people, anime just so happens to touch upon subjects I either didn't know I wanted, or have always wanted to see done masterfully. Leave it to Japan to come up with enigmatic and intriguing ideas for storytelling. The anime medium rivals even the global reach of American cartoons.
I'm not a serious reviewer by any means, but I also temper my ratings to what I think are fair scores. I may do a review or recommendation when I feel like it. What I watch does not depend on any one factor. Is the premise intriguing? A deconstruction? Is the screenplay and episode structuring quality? Is the animation passable or awe-inspiring? Are all plot holes and the logical framework lending to a solid foundation? If some of these or more criteria are met with a 'yes', then I'll look at it more favorably. What I have completed on my list may include titles from my SCRUB days when I had no idea what to watch, but it doesn't mean I still praise garbage.
For now, here is my rating system:
9 - 10 = Genre-setting, concise and focused, consistent, strong themes, quality everywhere
7 - 8 = Undeniably enjoyable, interesting premise, decent screenplay and episodic structure, logical narrative; may include nostalgia, good themes
5 - 6 = Undeniable issues with logical framework, narrative, animation quality, and/or thematic focus. But I would be lying if I said it wasn't damn fun.
3 - 4 = Issues overtake merit. While premise may have had promise, the overall series is hampered by glaring issues on at least half of all fronts.
1 - 2 = Egregiously, unforgivably bad due to glaring issues on nearly all fronts. It doesn't matter if the premise had value - It was truly slothful!
