A short and sweet review for this anime isn't really needed, but I feel like people sleep on this one quite often. Myself included. That being said, I wanted to publicly apologize for waiting to watch this show.
Disclaimer: I am NOT a huge fan of Gundam. I like the concept and do watch some mech genre shows, but I by no means have a professional or even brofessional opinion about the genre. I went into this show with low expectations and followed a friends recommendation to watch it.
Its good! It isn't a masterpiece by any means, but it will hit you in the feels some.
...
The story itself did kind of get clunky toward the middle, but sticking with it had a pretty good pay off.
The mech fights are pretty decent. Maybe a little bit more fluid movements would be something to get it a higher score, but what the heck am I really expecting. They are giant robots after all. I've seen worse in more popular, better rated shows. (Looking right at you Seven Deadly Sins and Dragonball Super)
It is widely available on multiple platforms to watch and download.
The 2015 artwork actually is great for 2022! It's not the focal point of the show, but it does alright.
The soundtrack is pretty good, but it didn't warrant me adding it to my Spotify playlist or anything. It is fitting for the show though.
In short, like I promised, I would recommend this show. It's perfect to download for a plane ride, or a job that has you sitting on your a** for long hours. Give it a shot!

Where to start.
I think there should be some bias for those that have played the game in a review for the anime. I personally built a rig for Cyberpunk 2077 the game when it was launching thinking it was going to be the next Skyrim in my life. It wasn't a total disappointment on PC, but it did definitely leave EVERYONE wanting. CDPR was pressured by their corporate division to hype a game and push it out the door for the holidays. It had a huge failure to launch. Especially those that couldn't afford the hardware to play it smoothly (PS4 Xbox360). That being
...
said, it was like walking into a house with infinite potential, and a lot of work needing to be done.
Fast forward about 1 year after the launch. CDPR has continued working on it. They scrapped some ideas for a dying game, but were ever hopeful that they could win the fanbase back, and get new players with this story and universe. The hard work has finally paid off.
Insert Edgerunners:
This show single handedly brought back over 1 million players (actively logged in) to a dead game. If that doesn't impress you even a little, I am under the opinion you cant be impressed.
The story itself is everything people were promised from Night City. If you are going to make it, you probably won't live. If you are going to die, go out with a bang! This 10 episode anime is a borderline masterpiece in its fast pace. The only reason it gets a point off from me is because I feel like it was just not enough. I wanted more! It is one of those that ends, and makes you go "wow" at the end. It doesn't really end though. It isn't a front to back and done type of story other than for the characters directly involved. It is just a small piece of the history of Night City.
The soundtrack is great! The game radio on the big screen is really cool to see. The OP is also very fitting and I am pretty happy they decided to go with Franz Ferdinand. We haven't heard from them since "Take Me Out" was a thing.
The art was very good and scratched a spot that only Trigger could scratch. It really did have love put into each scene.
This anime also gets bonus points from me, because it is good in both Japanese and English. It is very rare for me to prefer the English dub, but I did this time. I think it was because the game is in mostly English.
One final thing that makes this anime truly special is that is it able to get viewers that do not normally watch this type of media interested. Partly due to it being on a platform that is widely available to anyone that doesn't just watch anime, but also because of the very adult theme behind it. Think back to when MTV started doing animated shows or even further back to Heavy Metal 2000.
I doubt that I am alone in saying that this anime will probably be at the top of anime for the 2022 season. Do not miss out, and for goodness sakes do not influence your chance to view this masterpiece based on a failed game launch!

When this first came out, there was so much disgust with one of the early episodes. Honestly, it was a bit un-justified for a very adult show.
Any other fantasy show or story, goblins are at the bottom tier for monsters. Kind of like a stepping stone to go do great things like fight dragons, or conquer other nations, save the world blah blah blah. Well that's still kind of true, but what about the people they kill? What about the other vile disturbing things they do to the civilians? What about the young hero's that underestimate them? Well it's a good thing that there is
...
ONE hero out there that actually cares.
This anime is one of my favorites for the dark, gritty nature of this particular world. If you are tired of the standard teen saving the world, or young boy is trapped in a fantasy world and want something a little more dark and realistic, this might be for you.

It's done! AGAIN! The 5th Holy Grail war has a conclusion! Woo!
Just a warning to those thinking about starting this series which I think needs to be a disclaimer for every review of the Fate series except the first two that should be watched, DO NOT START HERE. Start at Zero (or do Stay Night then Zero).
With that out of the way, I have to admit as apprehensive that I was about starting this trilogy, this last movie was pretty freakin' awesome. The story is much more dark than the previous versions, because the main character through it all is Sakura. Her past is not
...
a good one. I think it actually makes it worth the watch just because of that. The other paths of the series just kind of gloss over her and sort of have her just...well there. Not in this version.
There are also other noteable changes to the characters as well. Shirou's choices and ideal are different. Illya has a role to play, but it's much more a hero. Saber is a SIDE character. She's pretty freaking awesome in this version, but I am thankful that they finally put RIDER at the forefront. She is actually really powerful and none of the previous adaptations really did her justice.
The battles are just plain beautiful to watch. I haven't had this much baddassery in fight scenes in anime for quite awhile. The budget for these movies is there and it shows. Movements are fluid. The sounds match. Destruction and blood is everywhere. Since they did span 3 movies, most of these fights are actually impactful too. I feel like I could pull up any one of them and show someone who has never watched any Fate, and they would think it's cool and probably want to start watching.
I want to be clear, that I have only just started watching Fate and quietly binged the series, but admittedly I do not know everything about it. Unfortunately, that did kind of make me miss something important at the VERY end. If you do not know who Touko Aozaki is, you will just have to accept it as it is what it is and enjoy the ending. It wrapped up alright without me knowing, but it was better after I did some digging. She is never brought up if a person simply Googles what order to watch the series in, so I feel like there should have been something to put her in at least a peripheral scene somewhere.
Very solid 8 from me, but again I am just some dude that started plowing through this series with reckless abandon. If you find yourself questioning if you should watch this after you have already felt a little burnt out from Zero, Stay Night, UBW(series), I promise it's worth the time.

Wow look! We are in ANOTHER Fate branch of the same Holy Grail war we have seen before! It has some things borrowed from the past, but it really just glosses over them, because its assuming you have been beaten to death with the lore, rules, and characters of this series. With that in mind, I'll say it again in this review and the next one when I finish movie #3, DO NOT START HERE.
Anyways, I won't have to worry about shout outs to characters being spoilers if you have watched Fate at all, but skip the rest of the review if you need
...
to.
This version of the beloved Fate series is like having something new in the room you're sitting in and having someone shout about the older version of the same thing down the hall. Sakura is finally more heavily involved and you get to see the twisted crap she went through (think Zero). Rider also gets more screen time (I wont say why, but it's much deserved). Assassin is also much, much cooler.
The only thing that really kind of puts this second movie down for me is the same thing that put the first down. There are things that are said or that happen that just kind of get filled in, because we all know what happened. From there we get pivoted slightly and get shown the, well what if he/she did this instead. It's kinda cool, but at the same time it feels like it took some wind out of the sails. It saves time, but parts of the movie feel like mini recaps instead of a full blown story.
This version has the same fat budget that the first movie had, and it shows. Also, a quick WiKi will tell you that it was received very well in Japan, and I would assume that the birthplace of anime might know a good anime when they see it. Also, if most of the fans of the series deem it worthy, it probably is worth your time.

Look at you! You ended up here in a round about way after starting the Fate series anime. You probably took some time to research how you should even start this anime since there are probably 5 ways to go about it.
Let me help you! Do not start here first. You will get some spoilers, but start at Zero. Really.
The best way to look at this would be like a series of games you enjoyed. You played the first one, and want to keep going with the other 4 to follow some sort of linear path forward. Unfortunately for you, it's more like a
...
"choose your ending" storybook type game that you can play from different angles with the same main character.
Stay Night, UBW movie, UBW series, and these movies are all about the 5th Holy Grail war. Each one is different in its own way, and has a lot of what the other ones have. Some side characters get much more screen time. Animation gets updated. Some characters die instantly or change how they get to the end. Honestly, it is a bit of a time investment and I can't recommend that anyone watch every part of this series, let alone these movies.
BUT
If you have made it this far, then you are like the main character Shirou and there isn't anything that is going to stop you. You will appreciate the changes they made, the very stylish and updated animation, and the fact that it's 2 more movies after this one. Go into it with an open mind if you are binging it like I am. Think of it like the same game you enjoyed at the start, with a different side quests and endings depending on choices made.

I am betting you ended up here looking at reviews, because someone told you about the Fate series and now you are finally deciding to watch it. OR you are a fan of the series already and were probably excited to see an updated version of your show. I am currently in the second half of this, and I am pretty darn entertained! I watched Zero and Stay/Night and was a little apprehensive about watching this because I already know what happens, but in all honesty it has been worth the time.
Story: Better in a lot of ways and more fleshed out for important characters.
...
It isn't the same as Stay/Night, and that's OK!
Animation: It looks like they had a bigger budget AND time. Unheard of.
Characters: They aren't as clunky in conversation, and they make choices that stick to what they would do. There's no 180 in personality just to make a twist that didn't need to be there. They do grow and change, but it doesn't feel rushed.
We get other criteria to rate shows on, but I feel like these are the most important. In my opinion you watch Zero first, then Unlimited Blade Works series you wont miss anything. To me it feels like growing up with Fullmetal Alchemist, and then watching Brotherhood. It's just plain better.

If I could sum up Fat/Zero into 3 words it would be "it's not bad".
If you are just NOW starting to watch this series, this is where I would probably start. It is a prequel to the popular Fate/Stay Night series that was made in 2006. Lucky for us watching in 2021, we don't have to watch it in the Tarentino-esq format as it was intended. If you wanted to, you could watch this before Stay/Night (or Unlimited Bladeworks which is the same thing only better). Zero will lay out the groundwork of the series for you, and explain the Holy Grail wars and
...
what was so important about the 4th one.
Watching this did actually make me research some of the legends that they had show up as "Servants" for the Holy Grail war. It was interesting! If you are in any way a fan of old legends, and amazing people that lived, loved, conquered, and changed our world, you'll probably dig the show.
I enjoyed the character development and the twists and turns along the way. Some of the fights were a little boring in my opinion, but some were pretty cool. It was very interesting to see the choices the main character makes at the end, and what lead him to do so. There is a little CGI in here, but its not overdone. Most of it is still good art, and I can appreciate that.

I finally went on to watch the Fate series, and was directed to come to Stay/Night AFTER watching Zero to keep it chronologically in order. Some of the purists of this series say that is a no-no, but I felt like the pieces did slip into place.
I really feel like I would have liked this anime had it of been 2006 when I watched it instead of 2021. It really hasn't aged all that well. Everything feels just ok. The dialog between characters is somewhat lacking, but I don't feel like it would have been something my younger self would have much cared about. I
...
probably would have been somewhat focused on the "love story" part of it and not known what should be said in that situation at that time. Man strong, woman weak, man protect woman. Woman can level a GD city tho...
The animation gets a slight pass from me just because of the age of the show. They did do pretty good with the fight scenes for when it was made.
To be honest, I will probably get flamed for it, but I would say to watch the Unlimited Bladeworks (series) version that was made in 2014/15. Some of the scenes are a little different, but the animation and story telling is FAR better. It is along the same timeline, so you wont miss anything by skipping Stay Night.

Most people have probably wondered if this anime is any good, and I can say it is! I can also say as a very manly man, that it definitely pulled at the heartstrings a few times.
This show, if it could be described in a metaphor, to me is like taking and ink drop and adding it to a glass of water. It doesn't really make a splash when you watch it, and it slowly develops to take over the clear space. Eventually it comes to an epic climax, where your glass is completely that color and you enjoyed watching it happen.
I would 100% recommend
...
this anime to anyone that wants to escape the general norm of action, shounen, isekai, or slice of life shows. This one has wonderful art, and a slow progressing story that doesn't go too slow, but it lets you appreciate the time you took to get to the end.
