You have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to music.

You're absolutely right about the timeless quality of the orchestra. I wish that was taken more into account these days with most drama directors/producers wanting status quo synth/drone scores that purposefully lack any emotional through-line. But in this score the instrumentation just unsubtly checks the boxes for each scene. I'm sure Yamada didn't compose to film (as pretty much no TV anime composers do), but you'd think that would give him more freedom to create something evocative. Oh well. It is what it is.

Also yup! I'm a huge anime ost nerd and there's virtually no analytical content in that category, so I figured I'd make some haha.

Yea, definitely understand where you're coming from. This style is dime-a-dozen these days for a simple reason; it's simple to make it sound good with virtual instruments in a DAW. It lacks the innovation and artistry present in scores by Hisaishi, Kanno, and the like. Even someone like Sawano (who has admittedly become pretty same-y of late) at least has a distinctive style within the vein of "epic" action music and his work with with orchestral/electronic hybrid music is really impressive.

I also agree on the piano issue. With the modern piano being an industrial revolution era instrument from mainland Europe it certainly seems out of place to have as part of a show based on actual viking history from the early 1000s. I mean, sure that may be looking too far into it, but I'd be much more impressed if the composer took the time and effort to utilize some instruments from the era as opposed to scoring it like a generic fantasy action show.

Hey man, I'm interested in your opinion on the Vinland Saga OST. I have no stake in the show or its music but saw your comment on the composer's page and I'm intrigued. Of course ghost writing is very commonplace in American film/TV music (much to my distaste), but is it this way on a JP production like Vinland too? Just curious.

I really appreciate the tags you've added to your anime list; I watched my new favourite film (Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome) last night in part because I went through most of the tags from anime rated 8-10 on your list to find new anime to watch! Now I'm looking forward to watching Tatami Galaxy :) You've inspired me to start adding tags to my own list.
