I think other reviewers are missing something very important. This is not supposed to be new material. Rehashing is okay once in a while I think.

This is a partial retelling from a different perspective for those of us that cannot get enough of the slimy goodness that was in the parent story ever. And they were good highlights (without giving spoilers).

After all, until we can get the second season complete enough to binge, we need something more that the OVAs (which were likeable enough).

Just my $0.02 worth.

Of course, your mileage may vary. But I was happy enough for what it was.

Only the Japanese could pull this one off. Take tragedy, love, mixed family, maids, macho woman, lolicon, pedofile, masochist, young Russian girl, elementary school, adult themes, and friends and put them in a bowl and mix well. There are cringeworthy moments that will have you in stitches because they are so bad. And there are moments that are so touching they will have you reaching for tissues. And it is all nonstop including the catchy opening and ending. I would recommend this to anyone brave enough to endure the roller-coaster extremes this anime presents. Let me give you the perspective of someone older who has experienced war both as a child and as an adult.

Violet Evergarden takes place during and after a war in which it travels through life with Violet the protaganist. But it seems we have gotten so jaded to violence that many will not be affected by all the losses to Violet beginning with the fact she began life as a feral child as well as physical and emotional losses she could not begin to understand. Things others call flaws seemed to just enrich the anime for me.
