I watch a lot of shorter experimental shows that make my list kind of messy. Click on the "shows" tag to just see the ordinary multiple episode anime I've seen, and "shorts" to see the weird shorter shows. "Movies" and "specials" are categories too.
To me the very best anime are the ones that make the world feel like a different place when I finish watching, and that I can view over and over, always finding something new to think about and appreciate and never becoming exasperated by the shows choices.
Kind of corresponding to that, my ratings are based on how rich I find the show and how I evaluate it artistically. I don't rate based on my enjoyment. First I ask myself 1) if the show has enough substance that I could rewatch it and enjoy it, and 2) whether the show has conveyed something intellectually or emotionally that I think will leave a lasting impact. If I answer yes to either question, the show will be in the 5-10 range. If I answer no, it will be in the 1-4 range. A show that gets 4, is a show I feel has succeeded with respect to its project. Below that, I feel it undermined itself. Above 5, things that matter to me a lot are efficiency of storytelling (does everything serve a purpose), innovation (in terms of genre, narrative, or characters), and vision. Above 7, I feel a show has fully succeeded in its project and I have no substantial criticisms I would make.
