I binged O Maidens in your Savage Season with my partner and it was a trip down memory lane. The show is a great coming-of-age story following (mostly) girls' and boys' discovery of sex and relationships.
The Good:
+The story centers five girls and how they each have their own confrontation with both sex and relationships. Most of these are fairly standard high school romances, however, at least two of the girls fall for older men. This might turn some off, but these relationships are handled with care and the show doesn't glorify them.
+There's a lot of care put into each one of the main characters, which
...
means that they each get a meaningful arc with a proper conclusion. The side characters too get a nice bit of attention and feel rounded. The few 'villains' we get end up rather flat and stereotypical, though.
+The anime manages to blend drama and comedy in a realistic and fulfilling fashion, which is all presented at a brisk pace. Every single episode drives the relationships forward, even if not a whole lot actually happens.
+The actors all have great performances and really manage to match their characters on screen.
The Bad:
-The artwork is fine throughout, but doesn't really do anything to set it apart from other shows.
-Out of the 12 episodes, I only remember three tracks and one of those is the Opening theme. This isn't to say that the sound is terrible, just that it doesn't leave much of an impression.
-Some of the high-strung jokes didn't land as well as the rest of the comedy.
Overall:
O Maidens is like a really well done burger. It's going to be a little cheesy and you might find a surprise or two, but you know exactly what you're getting which is a great 12-episode series about growing up.
