Yo, do you have any way I could contact you? Do you still use Discord or something? We used to talk a long time ago.

You're alive! I was actually planning on posting one stanza of the song's lyrics per month in case you didn't reply. :D You gave me quite the scare man. I really thought that something had happened since you just vanished without a trace so suddenly. I perfectly understand the need for some time away from it all - believe me, I've got the credentials for it as a fellow 100% introvert - but you could've at least dropped a line saying that you were taking some time off.

I'm sorry to hear about your girlfriend, though from the way you described the situation, it sounded like splitting up was inevitable. In the long term I think it's going to be good for you - it'll be a weight off your shoulders. It may not feel like it now but it will in the future.

I've been good, and I've got lots of stuff to talk to you about - stuff that will definitely cheer you up! So when do you think you'll be available again? Catching up is long overdue.

Hello?
How are you?
Have you been alright?
Through all those lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely nights?

Congratulations on the new apartment. Hopefully the location is good, the rooms big, the heating functional, the neighbors amiable, but most importantly, I hope it’s large enough to fill all the Lain merchandise. :P I'd definitely like to check it out sometime, yeah. Oh, and also, glad to have you back from the Stone Age!

I actually already completed all the teaching I needed to do by the time you replied, so that is already behind me. It gave me quite the headache while it lasted though. I've got a few more subjects left to deal with, but the hard part is thankfully mostly over by now and I’ve got more free time nowadays. Sad to hear that work has been exhausting – on that front I can certainly still relate. :/

Either way, I’ll try to be available on Skype more often, so definitely drop me a line whenever you’ve got the time.

Welp. Well that kind of sucks. Oh well, as long as they don't block or hide Nyaa.si behind a paywall, I think you'll manage. Thankfully, out here people know better than to try and regulate the Internet. We may be the laziest nation on Earth, but when it comes to our Internet freedom (and our torrenting privileges), we'll all collectively self-immolate if that's what it takes to protect those rights.

LOL, I'm never gonna live that "too dark" comment down, huh? Can't believe how quickly I 180'd on that one. But yeah, it's been a year and it's just that Madoka's staying power is not quite as strong as I thought, I suppose. That and with time I find myself gravitating more and more towards more realistic and/or slice-of-life anime. Not that I've seen much in the past year, in fact I haven't really been in the mood for anime at all lately. Miyazaki coming out of retirement might just draw me back in, though.

I still work night shifts, but I'm taking more classes than I did before, that and I go to schools to observe lessons. That's a prerequisite I must do before I can teach at those schools myself, which I'll be doing during my next (and hopefully last) semester. So yeah, you can imagine the sheer chaos. I might watch Great Teacher Onizuka in preparation for what's ahead, as I hear he's quite the role model for us philologists.

It's nice to confirm that you're indeed still alive, else I would've started getting worried how your ghost had access to your MAL account. And why it even bothered watching anime at all!

Sorry to hear about the situation you're in, man. Hopefully that improves soon and you find yourself with more free time. I really do miss the good old days. Leaving for work at the 56-minute mark is particularly nostalgic. XD

I'm fine, thanks for asking. Hope to graduate soon. Dealing with the daily grind. Waiting impatiently for The Last Jedi. That sort of thing.

Drop me a line here when you've got some free time on the horizon so that we can catch up properly. Looks like it'll be something we'll have to organize in advance given our schedules.

For what?
It's great to hear from you again. How have you been?

I've come back from the dead to say hello.

I planned on watching it years and years ago, but never got to it. Serial Experiments Lain looks like another one of those shows that's completely limited by its medium. One cour, 13 episodes, 22 minutes a pop? And it's a philosophical anime with a focus on psychology and the identity of man? I'll pass. Anime in a TV format with the intent of provoking thought are usually never able to fully express or pass a certain message to their viewer because of the limitations that come with creating an anime.

I could get a much better experience reading a book.

To be fair, it took me until this last re-watch to work out that they were connected, even with the abstract commentary drilling it into my head over and over with all the talk of 'the wired is an upper layer of the real world'. I'm very sure of my interpretation of Mika, and that scene (and the surrounding plot) really seems to confirm it.

With the alien, the key is that it's only an alien from our perspective. In certain scenes, such as at the end of episode 5, Lain looks a bit like an alien herself with her pale face and large eyes as she stares into the monitor. The bear was just an illusion of perspective, and we see the bear just before we see the alien, so I'm pretty sure what we're trying to be led to believe is that the alien is also just an illusion of perspective.

It's also to do with the nature of prophecy, as certain people believe aliens exist, which is also what episode 9 was all about, viz. the rewriting of history to fit speculation.

When Lain shows up as an alien to Alice, she could have literally been doing that at that point, so it's not jarring with any interpretation.

Looks like HaibaneLain had a good understanding of the 'real world' layer of events, but not the most important other one, which is a shame. Quite an arrogant person though.

I think what makes the nature of Lain so hard to solve is mainly down to the big reveal of symbolic duality happening only moments before the real world and the wired merge together in the show anyway.

Yea, that was mine, thanks! The second essay started off as random notes that I was taking while watching it for the 4th time, but soon I realised there was just so much to write about!

Pausing and re-watching scenes while recording some of the things they said which I found interesting gave me the extra time needed to piece it together. One of the things that bothered me for a while even after I thought I had worked it out was trying to understand why there two distinct Lains but also many different Lains. The lightbulb moment for me where everything else clicked together and I understood how the symbolism of SEL works was when I realised the cafe scene in episode 5 had happened twice. (better to watch in full screen if possible)

I thought the alien was just a red herring until I realised that to the Alien, Lain looked like a bear.
I'm happy that you found it enjoyable to read though!

So, did you see Spring of Birth? What did you think?
