Just your average British moe loving weeb, I was first dragged down to the anime depths by my housemate at University and i've been stuck down here ever since.
Not really got any specific genre preferences and I am a stalwart defender of the use of CGI in anime, it has its place and while its use hasn't been perfected yet, the shows that use it to good effect should not be shunned just because its not 2D animation.
Why I Love Anime: A Theory
With animation in general, but especially with anime I think one of the key things that appeals to me is that there isn't really a disconnect between fiction and reality like there is with live action shows and films.
Somewhere in the back of my mind when I'm watching something in live action I always know that what i'm watching is just actors playing characters and that the backgrounds are just sets, sound stages or greenscreens and as such I don't tend to feel fear or excitement for the characters all that much as I can't suspend my disbelief because at the end of the day its all an illusion.
Whereas with animation I don't have that disconnect because what i'm watching is reality for those characters, when i'm watching a character feeling sad or upset i'm emotionally invested because that feeling is real to them. Sure there are voice actors giving those characters their personality and the character's movements were drawn by animators, but when you view the final product I'm rarely aware of those elements and instead just feel like I've been given a small window through which to view the reality where this story takes place.
Also the width and breadth of animation art styles are usually infinitely more beautiful and varied than any way that we are physically capable of perceiving reality. From Shaft unique starkness to KyoAni's detail orgasms the way that animation visually presents its world and characters is just spectacular and so much more than what can possibly be shown in reality even with the advent of CG getting closer and closer to crossing the uncanny valley.
Obviously this isn't absolute and there are some animated shows that do it better than others, but when it comes to animation overall I think its a such a unique medium for telling a story that live action can't hope to replicate in its wildest dreams.
