My favorite waifus

I can talk philosophical and try to analyze writing all I want. I'm still a freaking weeb and I am not denying it.

My favorite video games

I think 13 sentinals is mostly a visual novel, but I've played like 3 VNs so I don't think it makes sense to put it in a different category for now.

BTW, I finally finished my fanfiction! I'm rather pleased with how it turned out.

I started reading manga in high school back around 2003 or so. I read various volumes at my local bookstore and collected volumes for Rurouni Kenshin, Love Hina, Inuyasha, and Dragonball. Overall, I tend to read a lot more novels than I do manga. If you look at my Goodreads you’ll get a very accurate idea of what I read since I’m pretty good about updating it. The last thing I read was a medieval fantasy horror novel called “Between 2 Fires” which one of my offline friends told me about. It was really fun!

I've heard the anime isn't as good, so I just haven't gotten around to watching it.

actually a perfect character that defines a character being good because of the story is a character in your favorites. homura.

Exactly! Glad you can see that.

on the other topic, I actually haven't seen any of the shows you used as examples yet. I know they're great, but there is much good media out there I constantly feel like I'm playing catch up. lol

I don't recommend these shows if you're not into slice of life. I've been consuming this medium for a long time. I started watching seasonal anime around early 2010 (so when I was 8) so I don't blame you lol. Anime is also the only medium I consume, I started reading manga actively two years ago.

If I was to use shows as examples that perfectly build up their events without being slow, it would be the vinland saga, arcane, and the promised neverland season 1.

Vinland Saga is a great example. It's a good thing that the anime lives up to the manga.

the key is to use build up new pay offs, withing the previous pay offs. so the factors that help create the first big moment, use that as build up for their own big moment. which is why more than anything else it takes planning.

I don't necessarily think we need big moments to make a good character but it does take some planning. If we get characters with extraordinary appearances, endearing personalities, and meaningful backstories then that's good enough. But it's a bonus if we get to know their motives that help with their actions and decisions since it helps construct a narrative in the story.

these aside though, how do you quote on profile comments?
I've seen a few people do it. I thought I would figure out at some point, but never did lol

That is a personal bias since I have a weakness for slice of life, iyashikei, and coming of age stories.

But delving back to Oshi no Ko, Akane is still my favorite character even after being caught up in the manga.
u_zech May 25, 8:43 AM
About shows that do take careful time on their characters, great examples would be shows such as Anne of Green Gables and Touch (Cross Game is more easily digestible). They're long, coming of age stories that is too slow for your average anime fan. But if you can get past that and the outdated animation, it'll feel like you just immersed into their life. A cathartic experience that is where you feel emotionally impacted by these works.
u_zech May 25, 8:35 AM
but I also think most pieces of media would benefit from using more build up. the truth of the matter is that getting the most out of every plot point, either needs masterful planning to an extremely high degree, or slower pacing. one of which is something that would take an extreme amount of time and skill to pull off, and the other is something that most people find boring.

I think so too. Take works such as Sangatsu no Lion for example. It's a great example that appeals to both casuals and critics. Not just because of simply having drama, but the tact they put into the drama. Whether that would be the dialogue, time put into the characters, endearing art style, etc.
That's true since if they were to do that, we might get a lot more profound shows. At the same time though, it would be less digestible to your average anime viewer compared to critics.

so when I try to criticize something on "not having enough build up" there needs to be a massive room for it. since anything can improve by "an" amount with more build up.
That's fair. It mostly depends on how long it would take for a viewer to feel attached to any character. Which is why it's safe to just add more time regardless, but as I mentioned just now, it would be too slow/boring for the average viewer.

and I at least can't think of anything that character could have done before the drama that would have added enough to the impact to be worth it. specially because she didn't actually die.
Personally, I would love to see the reason Akane became an actor in the first place. Sure she's gifted and passionate about it, but I'm sure there is more to it since she has a lot of heart. Basically, I would like to see the circumstances she's in or her journey as an actor.

Exactly. I think Oshi no Ko is the only work in this medium that has delved into cancel culture.

If the story the character is going through is interesting, you care about the character faster.
If you care about the character more, you get more invested in her story.

That's a good way to think about it. Though if you want to care about the character in the first place, there needs to be a reason. I don't think having an atypical topic is good enough, that's where the story comes in. Though you can argue that you care about Akane in the first since you can anticipate her dealing with cancel culture and don't want her to experience it. That itself is a reason.
literaturenerd May 24, 2:06 PM
The last episode of Oshi was actually a lot better than I expected. I really think it could turn things around and end up with a 6 or 7 from me by the end.
u_zech May 24, 8:29 AM
Even then, I still resonated with Akane. Tbh, I wanted to get a profound experience out of it but I still appreciate they brought this topic up since they put tact to it for the relatability.
u_zech May 24, 8:25 AM
I saw your comment on literaturenerd's pf, I'm glad to see some praise and you brought some great pointers. Though I actually do think they should've put more time with Akane if they want that resonating effect. It allows the audience to get attached to her rather than getting straight into the drama. I actually mentioned this with a discussion I had with someone about the episode.

Finally! Someone fixed what MAL ruined.

Heavenly Delusion was very good this week! It's now moved into my #2 slot for anime of the season. Vinland S2 is still in 1st.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
