I want to start this review while freely admitting that by the time of writing it, I haven't watched much anime. However, I am an avid scifi and fantasy books reader and watch most of the blockbuster movies in the genre. I have to say that I haven't watched a story as good as this one. The Deathstalker novels by Simon R. Green come close, but they lack the boyish feel of innocence which this anime has, despite its many tragic moments.
I fell in love with the characters. Kamina is probably the most inspiring hero I have seen in fiction, Simon the most adorable. I ... loved the plot, how it evolved and kept increasing the scale and the bets. I loved the battles, deliciously over the top. I loved that the anime literally had no boundaries, it had everything.
As for the mecha, it was cool. But it is not about the mecha. It is about the potential of humanity, which is limitless. I thank the creators of this anime for the wonderful story.

I watched this anime after it was recommended to me in a Transformers fan group. Although very old, it is pleasant to watch. The story of a combiner robot may feel cliche now, but it was probably fresh in the 70s and Voltes V is one very cool mecha with great weapons. However my favorite character was the antagonist, Prince Heinel - I wouldn't say villain, for he is not one, not for me, at least.
This anime also reminded me of some childhood favorites such as "Voltron" and "Saber Rider", which was a pleasant feeling, as it reminded me of better, carefree times.

This is my first review in My Anime, so I am a little bit excited.
Overall, this one was a great series. Maybe it could have been a little better at the ending, maybe not. However it had lovely and beautiful art, absolutely amazing characters - especially Lu Bu, the feared general warrior - and a fascinating story, which I understand is based on a classic Chinese novel. I know that the concept of chibi gundams acting as people might be weird for many, but I found it similar to Bionicles and more compelling.
My final rating is 9.5 out of 10.
