Digimon started it all for me. Not only was this the first anime I ever saw, but it was also the very first show I watched dutifully- I never missed an episode. Digimon was also the first thing I got into outside of the show; I had Digimon cards before I even got Pokemon cards. Seeing as how just seeing a picture of the first season of Digimon fills me to the brim with nostalgia, my judgement may be somewhat clouded; but to me personally, this is and always will be my favorite anime of all time. No matter how many times I rewatch this ... series, it defines perfection. None of the seasons after it lived up to its legacy. For its target audience (and anyone who saw it at the right age), there is not a single flaw in this series; and any perceived flaw is, to me, just downright incorrect.

To summarize my already short review, Digimon: Digital Monsters is and always will be my absolute favorite anime, cartoon, television show, and work of art that has ever been my pleasure to witness. I have nothing but pity for those who didn't get the amount of enjoyment out of it that I did.

While it has already been said by Haak, I feel I need to confess that I greatly prefer Toaru Majutsu no Index to this spinoff series. Therefore, my rating and review are somewhat skewed in that I cannot help but compare this anime to its parent.

That said, the anime itself is certainly not a bad one. The very world in which the Toaru stories take place is well-founded and makes a perfect host to many potential stories. The sci-fi features and powers are highly attractive in their own right, and the story telling remains top notch. The main flaw in this series that stood out ... to me personally was, to be honest, the characters. I find that Misaka works significantly better as a side character and romantic interest than she does as a main character- her defining feature is being a tsundere, and without a male counterpart for her to interact with, that facet of her personality is sadly rarely present. Her lesbian friend's antics are fine in moderation, but get tiresome when she has so much screen time. All-in-all, I think the series operates significantly better when centered around Touma and friends than around Kagaku no Railgun's major cast.

However, don't take this to mean that I don't think this series is a good watch- it is certainly entertaining, and I think anyone should give it a try. I simply would have enjoyed an earlier release of the second season of Majutsu no Index significantly more, were it up to me.
