Shiki

Mysterious and compelling thrillers defined by their atmospheric settings - remote, isolated country villages with a knack for outbreaks of the supernatural variety (perhaps not the best real estate pitch!). Both series also offer a great character study, fantastically eerie background music, and a pretty interesting take on human nature. Shiki is probably the darker, more focused of the two, while Ghost Hound tends to have more slice of life.

Canvas 2: Nijiiro no Sketch

For people who like tricycles and magic lamps! And other such things, like love triangles. Both are school-based dramas centering on relationship woes among the three central characters. Both series are unique among the genre in that they will throw some curves here and there, so there never is an obvious resolution to the triangle until very near the ending (if that!). Worth a watch if you enjoy multidimensional characters and aren't afraid of a little angst.

Giant Killing

Fantastic character studies masquerading as sports series! Both series do devote a good deal of time to matches and games, but the real attraction here is the great sense of pacing and a well-developed cast of characters. Cross Game is more leisurely and romantically inclined, while Giant Killing is more bombastic (and has a lovely musical score~). You don't need to know much about the respective sports to enjoy these shows!

Cardcaptor Sakura

Do you enjoy bright colors and sparkly explosions? Do you ever wish that there were more magical girl shows with gradually expanding casts of protagonists and lighthearted action fare? Do you like your anime sprinkled with oodles of happiness~? If so, then congratulations, these two shows will probably appeal to you! CCS is more episodic in nature, while Nanoha tends to follow one large story arc.

The Third: Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo
add

Both series follow female protagonists who struggle to free humanity from the shackles of their mysterious and more advanced overseers. Honoka from The Third is definitely more self-sufficient, whereas Scrapped Princess's Pacifica is more your typical damsel in distress. Both shows are quite underrated in my opinion, and feature good character development and a fantastic, colorful setting.

Eikoku Koi Monogatari Emma

...then you might like
Saiunkoku Monogatari
add

Both are lovely period pieces that center around a main couple as they struggle with their relationship and the crossing of social and gender boundaries. Saiunkoku Monogatari is a bit more upbeat and shoujo-ish, while Emma definitely takes a more realistic, subdued spin on things. Recommended for lovers of heartwarming romances (and period pieces, of course!).

If you liked
Hitohira

...then you might like
Shion no Ou
add

Both series follow young girls in their struggle to find their voices (for very different reasons, mind you!), as well as encounters along the way that help them along that path. Shion no Ou is much darker in nature, while Hitohira is more of your classic school drama. Both series are also rather underrated, in my opinion.

If you liked
Mushishi

Natsume Yuujinchou
add

Both wonderfully soothing atmospheric slice-of-life series involving male protagonists with the uncommon ability to see spirits. In the course of these episodic stories, we learn that these spirits are neither good nor evil, that they simply exist - a message both shows seem to reinforce. Mushishi tends to be more dramatic, whereas Natsume Yuujinchou carries more of a comedic touch.

Both are cute, relatively simplistic series that manage to surprise you with solid character development and a charming mix of humor, drama, and romance. Being CLAMP works, they share many stylistic similarities as well. Also, also, you get to see the super-awesome Piffle Princess store in both shows~! It apparently sells everything you'd ever want to buy.

Aria the Animation

Sasameki Koto
add

Sasameki Koto has some shoujo-ai elements and is slightly more angsty at times, while Aria is lighter fare, but at heart, both series revolve around a group of girls making friends, having new encounters, and simply living life. Recommended for slice-of-life fans who enjoy a sprinkle of comedy and a dash of funny faces.

Higashi no Eden

Both series with tremendous potential, but which suffer from abrupt endings. They each have a male-female duo with a good dynamic as protagonists, as well as a mysterious atmosphere and a solid supporting cast. Watch if you enjoy cliffhangers and unresolved plot lines~!

Aria the Animation

For lack of a better description, both series are essentially about nothing, and yet you enjoy them anyways. They both contain a soothing pace, a beautiful and creative world, and are just plain relaxing to soak in. Slice of life at its best. And yes, I agree with the previous recommendation that scenery candy is delicious!

El Cazador de la Bruja

Michiko to Hatchin
add

The primary protagonists of both series basically consist of a traveling female duo - a worldly, older character assisting a more innocent, childlike character (though Hatchin is probably the most responsible of them all!) - in search of a certain goal. Both series also benefit from an incredible sense of setting (in the Latin culture) and music, as well as great character development. A must for those who enjoy slower, more deliberate pacing and complex plots.
