She was the illustrator for the Pokémon Special manga until volume 9. She stopped drawing for the series due to an illness which left her hand weak and unable to draw, leading Satoshi Yamamoto to take over her position from volume 10 onward.

I love her work so much, it’s actually what motivated me to learn how to draw and now I’m here many years later still drawing. Very sad she doesn’t illustrate for Pokémon anymore, her style fit so well with the style and characters of the series. Hope she is doing well.

I dropped Pokemon Adventures/Special eventually due to Mato not continuing to draw for it. Volume 9 was her last. I really miss her art somehow, there is a special softness and cute charm to the way she drew characters that cannot be recaptured by the current artist.

I will never forget her brilliant art. I will forever stand by the notion that Mato was not only the best at portraying Blue, but she gave Blue this charm and spunk that I can't really put into words. Mato was able to pack every ounce of Blue's brilliant personality into everything she drew of her, and that is something that Satoshi Yamamoto (don't worry; you know I love you Yamamoto) will never be able to match, when it comes to drawing Blue. In the GSC arc, when Yamamoto was trying to mimic Mato's art to make the transition smoother, some of that magic that Mato had with her portrayal of Blue was retained. But once the FRLG arc came around, honestly, I just really cannot stand the way Yamamoto drew her (in the FRLG arc). Maybe it's the outfit she wears, or maybe it's the really out of character expressions she has throughout this arc. Mato, you will forever be a part of Pokemon Special, no matter what. Thank you.

I loved her work on the first 9 volumes of Pokemon Adventures! It's such a shame she doesn't work on it anymore; the series just doesn't retain its charm without her.
