At the New York Comic Con today, Bandai announced that it licensed the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and also acquired licensing for the manga series Ghost Slayers Ayashi.

Also announced at the convention in New York was licensing of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Gurren Lagann was originally picked up by ADV, but was taken off their catalog back in January, and did not return when other titles returned the next month.

Here's some more information about Gurren Lagann.

The second, however, came entirely out of left field, to cheers and gasps of surprise from the audience. Aniplex and Bandai Entertainment will be bringing out the North American release of Gurren Lagann. To get this highly anticipated anime out to fans as soon as possible, there will be two separate releases. In July, August, and September, the entire series will be brought out in a bare-bones sub-only format, at nine episodes per DVD. This will be followed in the first months of 2009 by a more standard release, containing both the original Japanese audio and a completely new English dub. Scenarios for online distribution are also being considered

From ANN.

So it's possible to get the entire Gurren Lagann DVD set by September?!
Wow... props to Bandai for this distribution strategy...

As for Gundam 00... did they mention when it'll be released? or wheter it'll be Boxset format?

ah, subs only version. Might pick up, depending on prices.

then again, I don't buy anime, haha.

Tnx for the info, so I guess US fansubs will continue fansubbing of 2nd season.

You do realize that it doesn't matter right? Whether or not it has been licensed, it's illegal. If you download anime off the internet/IRC/torrents for free without the studios consent, what you are doing is illegal. And if fansubbers distribute the anime without consent of the studio, it's illegal. Whether or not it has been licensed.

Nice Trolling there.

This is GREAT. Bandai does such amazing work, so I have high expectations for both releases.

I know its not the main focus of the news story but does anyone know anything more about "Ghost Slayers Ayashi"
Its not a manga title I've ever heard of, doesn't seem to be listed on MAL, and doesn't bring up any obvious results in google either, but I assume as they've bothered to license it, it has to be noteworthy in some way.

Ghost Slayers Ayashi is the english title for Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi. Personally I've never watched it so I have no idea about the show.

I'm actually pretty amazed this got licensed. Also, stupid title.

Wow, that was really fast. Gundam 00 (first season) has only been finished for a few weeks... Usually, series are around for a time before they get licensed. American production crews are getting more eager for new material, I guess.
Actually, I'm kind of surprised it took so long. Both Code Geass and Darker than Black were licensed mid-run. Of course, neither has seen a release yet to my knowledge and that was almost a year ago.

I was really curious about Gurren Lagann because I went to ADV's website and they had no information on it, but now I have an answer and I think you for that.

,

I do realize it's illegal, but I think it matters, because the good fansubs drop series when they get licensed.
It's illegal, but it's the only way to watch subbed anime in my country. Here in Argentina, you can't buy anime dvds because they are not released (not even very popular series like Dragon Ball Z), and spanish fansubs translate from US fansubs, so that's why I'm glad that US fansubs keep fansubbing this series.

hmm...looks like a July, August, September release. Interesting. And I can get vol.01 earlier than the retails since I'll be at AX.

Unless you're looking for dubs, Gurren Lagann is not going to take that long to come out. The first volume is due out in July.

Apr 18, 2008 9:11 PM by tainteddonut

Gay, I'd have to wait longer for TTGL now. >_>
