'Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai' Gets TV Special

The official website of the Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen (Kaguya-sama: Love Is War) television anime revealed on Sunday that a television special anime is in production. The website also revealed a key visual (pictured).

The anime series adapts Aka Akasaka's romantic comedy manga, which began in Miracle Jump in May 2015 and switched it to Young Jump the following March. Shueisha published the 28th volume as the final in December 2022. Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai has a cumulative 22 million copies of its compiled volumes in circulation.

The first season aired in Winter 2019, roughly covering the first five volumes. Aniplex of America licensed the anime and simulcast it on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu. The second season aired in Spring 2020, adapting up to volume ten. Funimation exclusively simulcast the second season and subsequently began streaming an English dub. The third season aired in Spring 2022, based on up to volume thirteen. Crunchyroll is simulcasting the anime with subtitles and dubs in multiple languages. The sequel movie premiered in December 2022.

VIZ Media licensed the manga in English under its Shonen Jump imprint in February 2018 and published the 28th and final volume in April 2024.

@iwubanime Well, I don't know how true that was one way or the other. There were counter rumors that they were supposedly planning to do a next season, but as you can see at the moment it looks like they've chosen a third path.

Thanks for the details. I guess that's not too surprising, in the end it's all about money around the source material and merchandise (I guess those are the main contributors). I really hate that. I want more complete adaptations :(

@Yubisoft - In the universe where it took a long time for Iruma-kun season 4 to be announced. Similarly Kaguya-sama has not had an announcement since its movie in 2022.

@MrDariox I could understand if they just skipped those chapters, but when they literally pretended those chapters were in the past to formally let us know they didn't erase them, it was really offensive.

@RobertBobert third season, but yeah.
Just before that, they had two OVAs that loosely set up the third season, which adapted the most beloved arc, but both left out a good chunk of the series (close to a quarter) and gave it a surprisingly sad ending, since the company close down soon after.
A-1 won't close down any time soon, sure, but I can't help but feel like this may be their way of getting to a closing point (even if maybe the movie was a more elegant way of doing the same)

Ending a manga is not a problem for modern anime, in these 2-3 years you will see the final seasons of titles that manga have long ended. The problem is that right now there is a very toxic atmosphere around the author of this manga and if any of the fans' fears come true, things will only get worse.

@MrDariox Are you talking about how the second season skipped a bunch of chapters, only briefly mentioning them in the "flashbacks" ?

While it's not close to my favorite romances, I've been wondering about this series for a while. I found its treatment surprising as it seemed really popular at one time. It just sort of fell off for a while (similar to Iruma-kun) which was odd. I didn't know if they stopped producing seasons because the source finished? (typical Japan) I'm happy to see that there is still hope for a complete adaptation.

@Softhenic03 I don't think anyone doubts that Kaguya's fandom is still pretty loyal to the title, even after everything that happened with Oshi no Ko. Although as fans of both shows, I think most people are salty about it anyway. But deciding to do this while the Oshi no Ko adaptation has slowed down and is slowly falling out of trends or when people are focused on his new manga seems like an odd decision.

I get the feeling that Aka is so keen for his target audience to constantly debate whether he's a genius or a mediocrity that even when the debate around him is dying down, he gives againg fueling it. I can't say for sure if the decision to make this special was made to somehow brighten his reputation after the troubled past year, but I have a hard time imagining what they're going to do with this special. It's not enough to wrap up the story and they obviously (hopefully) won't dig themselves in any deeper. An original episode then? But for what?

@Yotsuba84 Yeah, except that with the Oshi no Ko disaster, any controversial manga ending that year was perceived by fans a LOT more tolerantly, lmao. And this is in the year when we got 3 or 4 of them one after another.

If anything, I'd just hope this special means season 4 is around the corner, and they're just testing the waters with this one.

Adapting any chapter which happened much later will make very little sense, so I hope something like that doesn't actually end up happening.

I have already expressed my opinion on the forum, I will simply say that as a manga reader and a big fan, I am afraid of such a continuation, but it is still better than "nothing". I am waiting, of course. I am following the news.
