Second Season of 'Ao Ashi' Announced for 2026

The official website of the Ao Ashi (Aoashi) anime series announced a second season on Wednesday, revealing a commemorative visual (pictured). The second season, produced by TMS Entertainment, is scheduled to premiere in 2026.

The television anime adapting Yuugo Kobayashi's sports manga by Production I.G aired in 24 episodes in Spring 2022, roughly covering up to the 12th volume. Crunchyroll streamed the anime with multiple subtitles and dubs, and released it on two Blu-ray volumes in April and June 2023.

Kobayashi began drawing the manga based on Naohiko Ueno's original draft in Big Comic Spirits in January 2015. Shogakukan published the 38th volume in December 2024. According to Kobayashi, the manga will end with the 40th volume. Ao Ashi has a cumulative 23 million copies of its volumes in print.

Ao Ashi won the 65th Shogakukan Manga Awards in the General category in January 2020 and was nominated for the 10th Manga Taisho awards in 2017.

Synopsis
In a quiet rural town, the spotlight of a local junior high school football team rests on one player: Ashito Aoi. Known for his unpredictable moves and self-centered playing style, Ashito is the sole powerhouse pushing his team through an important high school preliminary tournament. However, their win streak is short-lived—an opponent causes Ashito to lose his temper and act violently, resulting in his removal from the rest of the game.

Without their star player, the team is quickly eliminated from the tournament. Just as he believes all hope is lost, Ashito is approached by a youth team coach named Tatsuya Fukuda who senses potential in him, and Fukuda invites him for tryouts in Tokyo. In an unfamiliar setting surrounded by talent, Ashito must bring out the best of his ability to prove himself and secure what could be a life-changing career. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I’m hoping the studio change means a change in dub actors… Ciaran Strange is not it. That said, very excited for the second season!

@Amoh25 oh I agree. I think the reason IG couldn't do Ao Ashi s1 that well was because it had all hands on deck for Haikyuu at the time. I think even Ufo struggled with demon slayer s3 at times. I'm aware nothing is for certain, but damn it if i can manifest a good adaptation for quite possibly the best arc in the story, then so be it!

@BEaSTPadwal15 You can never be too sure. Production IG has worked on Haikyuu and Kuroko, two very good looking shows, yet Ao Ashi was still all still-frames.
Studio names are just banners for buildings. Yes, the name of the studio does (usually) dictate the kind of talent they can pull, but it's never a sure fire way to tell if a show's gonna be good. The actual quality of the show depends on the staff and whether or not they've been granted enough time to make the show. MAPPA, as another example, has worked on Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen (they pulled good talent), yet one of their products is also Hell's Paradise (insane production conditions with no talent pull), which looks atrocious for the most part. This applies for most studios that are not KyoAni, Ufotable, Trigger and Science Saru.
Studio changes usually occur because of production problems, that's why they're often followed by bad quality of the product. Let's just hope that that's not the case here.
So in conclusion to my pretentious ass speech here, we, infact, may not be good. Only time will tell.

New packs of still frames presented as "animation" is coming. While first season never had any great animation to begin with, it was pretty solid in overall consistency, and never goes lower beyond a certain bar it planted. Anyway, expecting a quality drop. Would it be siginificant, or not so much, well, even the first trailer should give enough info to drew some conclusions.

I'm glad to see we're getting more content! I remember really enjoying this. I'm a little surprised it took so long but at least it's here. I really wasn't expecting this to see another season.

Definitely was NOT expecting this. Genuinely thought that this was gonna be one of those shows that gets a single season and then leaves the fanbase wanting more, all to never return.

I am SO happy about this. This might be my favourite recent sports anime.

Production IG would have been preferable, but TMS seems like a safe studio.

Don't believe we'd see a huge dip in the quality or anything, but yeah would've been good if only production IG continued.

Production I.G. had delivered a quality product for the 1st season, but it wasn't the best-animated project in their catalog either, despite good direction.

TMS should be able to deliver a similar quality.
