The Hakuyrou Dai Fuzoku aNCHOR Gakuen Web Seito Soukai event unveiled a teaser visual (pictured), special promotional video, and television format for the new anime adapting the Muv-Luv Alternative visual novel on Saturday. Avex Entertainment opened an official website for the anime project, which was teased at the âge 20th Anniversary broadcast [still breathing] event last October. The anime series is scheduled to premiere in 2021.

The original Muv-Luv visual novel was released for Windows in February 2003, followed by Muv-Luv Alternative in February 2006. The Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse side story novel launched in Tech Gian in December 2006, which has six volumes in print as of March 2013. âge released a visual novel adaptation of the novel in May 2013, concluding its story.

Dengeki Daioh serialized a Muv-Luv Alternative manga adaptation from August 2007 to April 2017. Kadokawa released the manga in 17 volumes between April 2008 and June 2017. The magazine also serialized two manga adaptations of the Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse novel.

Tech Gian ran the Schwarzesmarken spin-off light novel from November 2010 to March 2014. Kadokawa published the light novel in seven volumes—as well as the two-volume Schwarzesmarken Requiem side story—between May 2011 and July 2013. The Schwarzesmarken: Sekiei no Bernhard debuted in the magazine in June 2015 and has two volumes in print as of January 2016.

A 24-episode Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse television anime co-produced by Satelight and ixtl aired in Summer 2014. Crunchyroll streamed the anime with subtitles as it aired in Japan. Sentai Filmworks licensed the show in North America in September 2014 and released it on Blu-ray and DVD in January and May 2015.

LIDENFILMS and ixtl adapted the Schwarzesmarken light novel into a 12-episode television anime in Winter 2016. Crunchyroll simulcast the anime with subtitles.

âge and video game publisher Degica jointly launched a Kickstarter campaign to localize Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative in English in September 2015 and raised over US$1.25 million in two months, exceeding the initial goal of $250,000 and meeting all the stretch goals. The original game was released on Steam in July 2016, followed by the sequel in September 2017. The campaign also released the Muv-Luv Photonflowers* and Muv-Luv Photonmelodies♮ fandiscs on August 3 last year and July 30, respectively.

Muv-Luv Alternative on MAL

Many people asking how is this the best rated vn on vndb, well i won't go on comparing to other really good vns because they're all great on their own but one thing i'll say for sure that the details to worldbuilding are insane in muv luv specially in alternative. As for the story all i'll say is read it. Yes its long and its lengthy but it's probably one of the most ambitious stories you'll ever read.

Well there it is. Hard to not be excited really. Bring on the poggies

That said I'm still not sure what exactly they're doing about Extra/Unlimited so things are still a bit up in the air

Alternative is a million times better yes. It's still the #1 ranked visual novel on VNDB for a reason whereas the original is nowhere remotely close to that. However, the original is still the start of the story, so jumping straight into MLA and skipping it will make you miss out on some plot points in Alternative so it's not an ideal solution either even if the first game is pretty average by itself

I didn't even know this VN had the best score on Vndb... You want to say to me it's better than both Steins;Gate and Umineko no naku koro ni Chiru? That's really hard to believe...

Anyway, if I get it right, if I want to completely understand the story I still have to play (probably the original) Muv-Luv and there's no anime that would make it easier for me?
Yes Steins;Gate is 2nd and Umineko is 3rd if you wanna go by VNDB rankings at least. As for whether it's better is subjective but they're all very much worth reading

And well we still don't know exactly what this anime will cover so I can't really answer that question (nor can anyone else) but at the very least there is no adaptation of the original Muv-Luv yet. If you wanna play through the games then it's simply a matter of pushing through a somewhat average two-part game in order then proceed to Alternative

I'm very concerned about this adaptation. How is this supposed to work without adapting Extra and Unlimited first? At the very least an ova would be nice.

It also seems to me that they are focusing far too much on the action. Literally the least important and least interesting part of the story. This trailer does not give off the vibe of a deep and mature storyline but rather just a mechs vs monsters action romp. Still no character animation to be seen.

It's also all in CG, which is quite disappointing to me. There needs to be more wear and tear on both the mechs and the beta imo. Everything is far too shiny for this world. It's not looking good guys.

It's hard to explain why Alternative is #1 without spoiling. But if you liked Steins:Gate you will definetly like Muv-Luv. All the concepts of Steins:Gate are in Muv-Luv. Unfortunetly Muv-Luv is a *very vey long story* and the setup of the beginning is very weak, because it's like Subaru from Re:Zero getting his dream world. When you are past Extra and you unlock Unlimited in the game you get the first twist.

Why is there already several Muv-Luv Alternative anime adaptations but not even one Muv-Luv one?

Is "Alternative" better?

The title says TV anime, so, it won't be a movie or OVAs, right?

I really liked the quality I saw on the video, CG can work really well, I loved it on FMP IV, on Yamato, and on things like Sidonia.

It can work really well and feel seamless, lets hope for a good adaptation, I will probably freak out if we get something truly good, otherwise, I will moderate my expectations.
This is my favorite VN, and one of my favorite series ever, so I really need to calm down and think rationally... it took them 14 years, and incredible support from us fans, with KS, to finally reach this point, all those times they rejected possible adaptations for MLA meant they wanted only the best adaptation possible, plz be good, plz be good, plz be good... hopefully, it will be great and make me cry and become an emotional wreck all over again.

It will only do me that, if it is a good adaptation, I won't feel for it, if it is trash, I have had many years of preparing my heart, enduring garbage adaptations of shows I love so...

Looks like extra and unlimited is gonna get shafted.

Good, just give me alternative I'm only here for the fanservice of seeing it animated anyway, I doubt any adaptation of muv-luv would have ever satisfied both the VN fans and the anime onlies.

Always down for more Muv-Luv. I don't mind the 3DCG. Just make it Muv-Luv!

no character animation still and its the 2nd PV already

I'm being absurdly optimistic but maybe they are planning to start from unlimited or extra and those scenes aren't ready at all other than the cgi part, but were used to generate hype since they are from iconic parts of the visual novel

Even 50 episodes is not enough to cover thIs story. It's also gonna be heavily censored anyway

im a 3DCG fan too especially none 2.5D animation stuff

but come on just here on MAL and countless comments on social media whenever there is 3DCG scenes or anime is shown on trailers the reaction are mostly negative

Houseki no Kuni was well received. It was indeed pretty.

The problem is, most of time, 3DCGI anime lok like total garbage...

The quality has been improving in recent years, thankfully CG is a far cry from the low quality animation of Berserk 2016/17

not necessarily, 3CG in anime does have it's own fanbase of people who like those types of shows, otherwise Netflix wouldn't be producing or licensing so many CG anime, moreover, no one would be making CG anime if no one liked it or bought it, so there is a fanbase out there.
I personally speaking, actually enjoy the aesthetics of a lot of CG anime

Hype is real. The best visual novel in history adaptation is going to become the anime of the year even if they don't work hard on animations because of its story, however we are waiting for something more than just that.

This news can only make me happy. First of all because it catches me off guard and because I liked the two anime series already made in the past. I can't wait for this new animated adaptation to arrive too.

can't say I'm too interested, I remember not being fond of some of the character design choices of previous series. I might keep my eye on this one, but I don't think I'll hold my breath

Apparently this is the best rated VN on VNDB, so I’m quite excited. Heard so many good things about it, obviously.

I wonder if I can watch Alternative without having played any of the VNs? I saw that there’s a prequel to this one

That's the huge problem with adapting Alternative only. It's going to be made for fans already/ Hopefully they give the anime only crowd something to help them understand. But if it is like the VN you are going to need to read Muv-Luv Extra and Unlimited to truly get it.
