To continue commemorating one hundred years of Japanese anime history, NHK has released a ranking for people's favorite anime characters as a part of Anime 100 celebration on Sunday at NHK BS Premium. The ranking was based from votes conducted from October 20 to November 19 last year. The 5-hour program also featured live dubbing (from works that people wish to hear again live and not yet animated), telephone call conversation, new year's greetings from the seiyuus, ranking, commentaries, as well as quizzes and talks about the characters in-between segments.

NHK has released the Best 100 Anime ranking last May as a part of their commemoration.

This list is wayyy more cultured than the west will ever be. Respect.

Also wondering if there is an extended list. Would love to see where other gintama characters especially zura and takasugi ended up.

Also funny how You ended up being higher than most of the OG Love Live characters. That's the power of YOUSORO~

KOTETSU IS NO.1??? Holy heck, I love him and his character and portrayal, design, VA, background, just everything! Nice to see he's first at least on this ranking, would love to see his reaction hahaha. I probably shouldn't be surprised since T&B is also no.1 anime on NHK's ranking. Japs and I match quite a bit.

Okay so I got introduced to the series through the anime like a scrub wtf that has got to do with this? Lmao

They ain't no "solutions" just your pure speculations, you ain't Japanese, you don't live in japan, you ain't got no evidence of NHK's poll being biased you're just being really opinionated

And saying the LN is "not" selling when it did get an anime after the LN being as far as the fifth arc lmao do you even know how the industry works?

Stop assuming BS you don't know how their poll works

You're basically just applying your standards in a Japanese poll like "OH they didn't have a taste like the rest of the anime only casuals of the world so their taste must be shit and the poll is bogus and rigged" lmao foh you mentioning Kirito convince me even more of you applying your standards to their taste lmao don't even try to deny it

Its a Japanese poll so its their taste in anime, and like what I already mentioned, Japanese are LN freaks, especially the teens. And having the LN goes as far as the fifth arc before it even gets an anime is an irrefutable fact. Or are you just gonna start assuming again that Japanese are a bunch of anime only scrubs? When in fact, they have the easy access to the source and that's just how the industry works, LN sales decides everything, and it getting an anime is also a fact of it's success not your opinionated assumptions, pure speculation BS

Aren't you misunderstanding something here? The sales numbers are displayed every week by Oricon both for light novel volumes and BD. When I say it's not popular, I'm basing myself on FACTS, IE sales numbers or lack of thereof (meaning it's not even selling enough to rank the week it was released), not on random assumption about "japanese tastes" lol.
The BD didn't sell great, and the novel volumes are worse. None of the new volumes make the weekly tops, and on top of this, none of the previously published volumes made it back during the anime; meaning that the anime boost was very minor, confirmed by weekly "series ranking" from Oricon as well.

Also, you're completely delusional about Japan. Japanese peoples being LN freeks when most volumes released don't even sell 5k and very few series have volumes above 100k in a country with 125+ millions?
Popular novels in Japan are million sellers with the Japanese market only. One of my favourite author, Matsuoka Keisuke, sold many volumes between a few hundred of thousands to more than one million of copies.
How many japanese LN sold above 1 million? How many are above 400k even? Extremely good sellers are between 100k and 200k, and above that it's pretty much one every few thousand volumes of LN that can reach above 200k.

As far as popularity goes, dark magical girl LN are a niche product amongst niche products. They sell just barely enough to keep being published, and the anime barely made a difference. How do you want a character of such a show to actually rank 13th without what I listed above as a cause?

Just because you're a fan of a series does not mean that you should turn a blind eye about the popularity of what you like. Getting an anime doesn't mean that a series is popular, but simply that the LN industry thought that there was a possibility of increasing -enough for it to be worth it-the sales with an anime, regardless of the current popularity.
And peoples telling you the truth about what you like aren't bullshitting just because you don't like what they tell you.

Want to see proof? QUEENS was released the 10th of December, so near the end of the anime. It therefore beneficed from the anime boost pretty much fully.

https://myanimelist.net/news/49050169
It sold so little that it doesn't appear in the week it was released nor in the following week either. Nothing to see here.
You can look at the comment for k_s 's stats as well and see that ti's 169th on the second week, and that despite having a new volume out last week AND an anime, Mahoiku that week sold as a whole barely above 6k. meaning the 9 previous volumes under anime boost + a new volume were 6-7k as a whole...

Furthermore, there is no digital release for queens so no chance to have a part of its sales being non reported due to digital sales.

You see, I'm basing what I say on FACTS, whereas you're just being emotional. I'm saying it's not popular because it's really not. So there's no chance in hell it would rank 13th in popularity in an all time poll if the poll was really made properly.

Blah blah, speculations, speculations, assumptions, assumptions, you're too delusional and thick headed and even calling your BS "facts" when in fact you know nothing about japan and how the industry works lmao you're one of those delusional madomagi fans acting like a Mr. Knowitall

And stop with that fake numbers, you got that in your room researching in your computer that's why it took you days to reply only to come up with irrelevant numbers.

The fact that you mentioned Kirito, you already lost this argument and credibility. Stop humiliating yourself using your standards taste and applying it on Japanese taste idiot

I was reading all those volumes you're talking about when you didn't even know that they existed yet.
And I knew how much the novel sales were low, you didn't even know that they were being released and what they were about, per se.
The amateur translator of this series created an account on MAL to talk with me about that series, because he couldn't find someone else who read it after starting reading them himself, and he saw I posted about several volumes on the mal subforum of that title. We had quite a nice long chat in pm about that series, since he was a huge and really enthusiast fan of it already.

It's not selling enough to appear even in a rank 100 in a popularity poll, let alone being 13th. No way it can reach a better place than characters like Kirito if everyone is voting fairly in that poll with a proper sample of voters.
Hence what I said are the only solutions.

Some people need to chill and see that their favorite characters are their own opinion. And if you get pissed at this list keep in mind that the characters you love will always be in your hearts no matter the public opinion is. Though I have to say I didn't expect some characters to be on this list like Kurama.
