good point there.. Im not an avid fan of aqours as I was to µ's so I don't really pay much attention to statistics now. A question though

Why are you comparing the aqours CD sale (HPT) to a sub unit of µ's (BiBi)? It is more fair to compare sub units songs of both idol units imo

And knowing that LL is a well known franchise right now.. I think it is expected that they will sell bigger number than µ's back then before LL movie was released dont you think so? but 2k increase doesn't really justify it.

Ofc I agree to you that Cyaron may just be the least popular sub unit in aqours.. much like printemps to µ's

First up, I am going to apologize ahead of time for being blunt here. But I do find that speaking to a fan whose attention to the Love Live franchise has waned between Muse and Aqours is interesting since it's a different perspective from mine and the ones more easily found among the current core fanbase (speaking as someone who watched the anime but only started digging deeply into the discography around the release of Sunshine).

No, I don't think it's expected that Aqours would be selling more than what Muse got during the movies. Muse received several huge boosts then, including the imminent ending of the generation, which I suspect helped drive sales.

Secondly, (and I hope you'd forgive me for being abit blunt here), a very large proportion of the franchise fans probably share the same degree of sentiment that leads you to be a less avid fan of Aqours than Muse. This sentiment multiplied by tens of thousands of fans results in naturally lesser sales despite high exposure. So no, I disagree with you that LL should be selling more at this stage, and I think the fall in Aqours sales shows that many people are less avid followers of Aqours than Muse, just as you are.

While it is unknown whether Lantis could have handled the generation shift in the franchise better in a counterfactual (sure they could have led it ripped with songs like Daydream Warriors that screamed Aqours skill and difference from the start, but I have a feeling that would have alienated alot of people too), the fact remains that Aqours hasn't been fully able to win the entire former fanbase of Muse over. Will this change? Well, it depends on whether attempts at innovation such as Innocent Bird, the AZALEA second single B side , or a song like Daydream Warriros or Guilty Kiss foray into Metal with Koraeyasuki will win people sharing your sentiments over and back into the franchise.

Thirdly, Bibi's third single was the second highest selling Muse single before the Movies were released. The highest was SIP S2's OP, Sora-Bokutachi with 69k sales. That being said, nothing else in Muse sold above 50k before the movie, except for Bibi's third single and SIP S2's OP. This implies regular Aqours sales are somewhere around the SIP S2 level.

Finally, CYaRon is indeed like the Printemps of Aqours. However, from what I understand, many of CYaRon's detractors see it as too similar as Printemps, a problem AZALEA and Guilty Kiss shares less severely (especially since GK heavy music pieces have no analogy in Bibi).

The Love Live franchise is playing a delicate balancing act between familiarity and innovation. If it turns out that fans are wanting innovation and punishing over-familiarity, AZALEA will probably be performing above 28k on the first week, (28k being the mark AZALEA should acheive if it grows in proportion to the growth implied from the increase between the 2nd Single and HPT (3rd Single) ; because AZALEA dared to pull off an unexpected EDM, while being known as an electro-pop Ballad primary genre sub-unit prior.

We're getting numbers for Linked Horizon's Shingeki no Kiseki next week. I would say around 30k-35k according to its ranking on Amazon since it has been solicited. Hopefully it's even more than that!

Agreed, it isn't much of a boost.

Printemps sold 1K, 16K, 39K and 40K in week one of their four singles. Aqours sales are lower than Muse after the second season overall. Perhaps with a second season and a movie they will approach Muse but I don't think they will ever surpass Muse.

I'd just to like to chip in here with some food for thought.

Happy Party Train, Aqours third single sold 54.5k on its first week, with an 8k boost from Aquarium, the second single, which sold 46.8k. This represents a 16.4% boost from the second single. HPT was released last month, which makes it a fairly current gauge of the health of the franchise as a whole, and Love Live Sunshine's Season two prospects.

We must remember that HPT has outsold Bibi's 4th Single, which had 51k sales and every single Muse single with the exception of Moment Ring, the last Single which sold a remarkable 96k. Essentially, before the Love Live Movies, only two Muse albums have beaten Happy Party Train - that's Bibi's third single and the OP of SIP Season 2. It was only with the Movies that we start seeing Muse albums actually get past 80k - before that, the record was 69k*. So, does CYaRon's shockingly bad performance necessarily bode ill for the franchise? I'm going to run a few numbers and let the readers decide.

Firstly CYaRon's Kinmirai Happy End actually did WORSE than AZALEA's FIRST single, by about 200 copies. It now has the dubious honour of being Aqours second WORST selling album ever. This means that if AZALEA second single did worse than CYaRon, it would sell less than AZALEA's first single.

Secondly, did CYaRon grow in proportion with the growth implied by Happy Party Train? As previously mentioned, HPT sales were 16.4% higher than Aquarium. Had CYaRon grown by the same proportion, CYaRon second single should have sold somewhere around 26.6k copies in its first week. Essentially, CYaRon's performance is disappointing in light of HPT

This suggests two things. Either sub-units, in general, are not capturing the full boost from the anime and the First Live. Alternatively, CYaRon is exceptionally unpopular among the sub-units, and have bled support in the year between its release. One evidence comes from how badly CYaRon's BD single performed when Lantis previewed it vis a vis the other subunits. CYaRon's P.S Mukogawa had 194k views on the Lantis Channel, while Guilty Kiss Guilty Eyes Fever had 440k views.

Now, this doesn't mean Guilty Kiss will sell twice the number of copies as CYaRon (in the unlikely event that happens, this will mean that Guilty Kiss second single will beat Aqours second single, which means Lantis has a possible Babymetal on their hands) , but it does indicate there's a CHASM between CYaRon and Guilty Kiss in terms of popularity. For reference, AZALEA's Lonely Tuning had 240k views. And Lantis uploaded the full version of Aquarium two weeks ago, and it has already more than 300k views and counting.

Whether or not then, the shocking poor sales is due to CYaRon itself, or whether it indicates the sub-units aren't able to capture the anime boost properly (do remember, Sub-units don't exist in the anime continuity) will probably depends on how AZALEA's upcoming Second Single, Galaxy Hide and Seek fares. If AZALEA grows at the same proportion as HPT -> Aquarium, Galaxy Hide and Seek should sell 28.6k, up from 24.6k. I'd say if AZALEA breaches 28k, then the cause for these poor sales is likely due to CYaRon's unpopularity.

Notes:
* I am only talking about the sales of music singles here, not Anime BD sales or LIVE albums.
