I think I was googling this maybe a year ago and got to a statement from Amazon that haruhi is the #1 spot for them alltime I think? (read: amazon-only, LN sales which probably is what he was asking for considering where we are here)
Found it:
source: https://www.amazon.co.jp/b?node=3974912051
That's just one retailer, though. Oh, and that's the LE of Haruhi which had both halves together, and the Bakemonogatari is the first volume, not the second. Incidentally, Kizumonogatari is one of those volumes that Oricons figure is obviously way too low for, on account of the fact that none of the anime of the series (including of Kizu itself) have gotten it back in the rankings.
Plus it's not really relevant to my post at all - especially as you can see Eien no 0 at the top of the bungaku rankings.
it wasn't just about you, I just quoted you since you looked like the person who knows the best about this :P
Yeah no idea how I screwed up that Bakemonogatari, obviously #1 and not #2 and yes like I said it's just amazon itself.
But since the other list someone else posted above does only include the more recent stuff I was wondering how that comes into things. I don't think amazon has a significantly different base of people buying then elsewhere so I'd assume it should be the same across the board but ultimately no clue.
Anways, just wanted to point out that there are big sellers that aren't represented in the "usual" rankings just because the rankings don't go back far enough but probably would outrank them if data was available. I mean Haruhi has got to have sold like crazy no matter the retailer, right?

From the context, I thought he's asking for a list of novels related to anime, not novel genre in general.
If you're asking for the highest sold novel (the list given above includes only light novels, novels strongly related to anime and "not-quite-light-novels-but-may-as-well-be"s), Eien no 0 has the highest sales since Oricon started in 2008, followed (I think) by the last Harry Potter volume. Madogiwa no Totto-chan probably beats them both to hold the all-time record.
Do you have any idea how many units Eien no 0 sold? It would be interesting to compare it to anime-related material...
Came out in July 2009
Sold 547,000 in 2010
Sold 269,814 in 2011
Sold 222,103 in 2012
Sold 1,880,401 in 2013
had sold 3,765,000 by 23rd Jan 2014
Sold 1,463,702 in 2014
That gives a highest known total of 4,383,020, which is excluding its first 4 months on sale (which was probably around 200k looking at those figures), and it's probably sold a 6 digit figure in the almost 2 years since as well.
It's the only volume to have made it into the year end bunko rankings more than 3 times, and if I'm right about the first 4 months it would mean that it narrowly missed out on making it 6 times in a row.

WHAT is so good about this Bibilia thing? It's sold so much but still no Anime adaptation!
It had a live action adaptation. No need for an anime.
To be fair, Mahouka's volume came out the 10th, so that's just the 1st days worth of sales.
To be pedantic, coming out on the 10th is 2 days of sales. There are very few light novel labels that will release on a Sunday (or a Monday for that matter) and Dengeki Bunko is not one of them.

To avoid misunderstanding this is LN ranking.
There are numerous million seller if you include normal novel(tankou bon+bunko bon)
There are most likely more than hundreds if not a thousand titles that are million seller(million seller meaning circulation number traditionally so not exactly same as oricon sales) in Japan

Yeah no idea how I screwed up that Bakemonogatari, obviously #1 and not #2 and yes like I said it's just amazon itself.

Amazon wasn't particularly big for long before the Oricon data starts. The fact that the last volume of Haruhi (the one that never got an anime boost and would have inevitably sold less than the earlier ones) is the one that shows up should be an indication of that.
The volume of Haruhi in question, incidentally, did sell well - it's 25th on the list that was part-listed above.
Kizumonogatari's heavy underrepresentation on the Oricon data isn't so much because of the start of data - indeed, it came out after Oricon started reporting rankings (it sold 16822 in its release week). It's more due to the fact that none of the anime adaptations (nor releases of later volumes) gave it enough of a boost for it to rerank. This may be partly down to extra rankings having become available over the years, but only partly. Perhaps more so in this case as the Literature Books Genre rankings, which the monogatari series - unlike most light novels - tend to have by far the lowest thresholds, making the later volumes be overrepresented relatively.
As for different fandoms buying things in different places - you'd be very surprised. For instance, Tsutaya has No Game No Life as 4th bestselling bunko for w/c 5th September, whereas Osakaya has it as 16th for w/c 3rd September - which should give it better sales than w/c 5th September does. This sort of variation is normal, and Amazon is not immune to it - although the massive difference in Amazon's ranking formula compared to everyone else's means that direct comparisons are difficult to make. However, I did try using rankings of new releases on Amazon to predict sales for a while, but found it absolutely hopeless, even though I believe Amazon's sales are included in Oricon. You can see an example here if you compare the order on that list (Amazon's order of new light novel releases in the week in question) to Oricon's rankings the following week. For example, Ryuu no Aisai, Dr. no Akuun was 4th top new light novel on the Amazon list but failed to make the 4749 cutoff, whereas Noushou Sakuretsu Girl was the 42nd highest new light novel release on Amazon for that week, came out on the same day, and yet managed to sell over 7.5k.
