New 'Free!' Anime Announced

In an event held on August 14 to commemorate the Blu-ray and DVD release of High☆Speed!: Free! Starting Days, it was announced that the Free! series will receive a new animated series. The type and length will be announced at a later time.

The Free! series is based on the High☆Speed! novel series written by Kouji Ohji and illustrated by Futoshi Nishiya. It has received various anime adaptations by Kyoto Animation, with the latest one being the prequel movie High☆Speed!: Free! Starting Days, which premiered on December 5, 2015.

The first season of the series is currently licensed in North America by Discotek Media, while the sequel is licensed by FUNimation. Anime Limited and Madman Entertainment have licensed the sequel for UK and Australian release, respectively. The series was also simulcast by FUNimation and Crunchyroll, with the latter licensing the dubbed version of the first season. The Blu-ray and DVD charted in last week's rankings, selling a total of 16,245 and 10,933 copies.

I'd really like to see a season about them as young adults! I enjoyed watching both seasons and the movie so I guess I'll enjoy whatever they are making now too

I am kinda scared how this would play out, but I should trust the writers. They did a great job so far, and they never failed to deliver. I loved the movie so much, and it cleared up so many things, however I can't see how they can add up to the story of the movie. Maybe they'd show us the results of what happened during the winter, and how Haru quit the club? Or how Haru drifted apart from his newly made friends?
I am kinda really curious about them, to be honest. They DID go through some terrible angst during the movie. I wanna know what happened to them, and how are they living their lives. Also, for Sousuke, too. I wanna know what happened to him. It is really sad that he can't swim anymore.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Free, and I am intrigued that it's getting another anime, but that fact that people who enjoy K-on have been begging for anything new for 5 years and have been ignored is kind of a slap in the face to fans. I don't know, I guess I am just being salty.

There's probably a reason why they can't make a sequel for it. Or because there's enough Manga? Or because Euphonium got a sequel?

....then again, that would make them less attractive for girls and all the semi-gay scenes and buff nudity in akward poses for the sake of fanservice would be ruined. Help us all .-.

Personally, I enjoyed the movie far more than the first season of Free so I wouldn't mind seeing the kids again but then again, the movie did as much as it could and I can't think of any other scenario for a sequel.

Hoping it's an OVA or mini-series depicting their lives after highschool.

Hope it's a sequel, a college-olympic-competitive swimming kind of sequel. It would be cool with all the hype for the Tokyo Olympics.

Besides, there aren't much sports anime/manga based on college-olympics preparation life, are there?

I personally think a third season would be boring, I mean, 12 more episodes of what?? Rin and Haru being rivals and competing against each other in the Olympics? Wasn't that what the the first and second seasons were all about? So, I'm hoping it's going to be an OVA or a movie. But thats just me and what I think, I'm probably going to watch it whatever it is.

Aand that's how you make dreams come true. It is something that many people have been waiting for for a long time , and whatever it will be (sequel or an extention) it would be amazing . The anime is outstanding , the film is , and so shall it be the new project . I am only wishing for a Free! series as long as Naruto's, or Bleach. Can't wait!
