ALA Chooses Manga REAL As Top 10 Great Graphic Novels For Teens 2009

American Library Association (ALA) announced this year's Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens. Three Japanese manga were chosen:
Sand Chronicles vol.1 - 3
REAL vol.1 & 2
Uzumaki vol.1

All of the three titles are published by VIZ Media.

The following manga were chosen as Great Graphic Novels for Teens (below top 10):
Metro Survive vol.1 & 2
Hikaru no Go vol.12 & 13
Slam Dunk vol.1
Kieli vol.1 & 2
Koukou Debut vol.1 & 2
Naruto vol.28 - 31
Shoulder-a-Coffin, Kuro vol.1 & 2
Two Flowers of the Dragon vol.1 & 2
Love for Venus vol.1 - 3
The Key to the Kingdom vol.1
Fruits Basket vol.20 & 21
Black Jack vol.1
Dororo vol.1 - 3
Honey and Clover vol.1 - 3
Hikkatsu! vol.1 - 3
NANA vol.8 - 12

Glad to see more recognition for REAL, it's one of the best manga I've read yet. Also, Uzumaki's an excellent read as well.

It's about time it was actually noticed.

And for anyone that saw the movie first; that movie is utter crap. The manga is like angelic kisses raining down from the heavens compared to the movie.

I was taken surprised when Uzumaki was chosen as one of the Top 3 even though I like a lot of Junji Ito's works. (I assumed that horror manga isn't really preferred by the general readers..)
Uzumaki was epic though, and the movie was rubbish.

Wow, Hikaru no Go made it. It's an awesome series that was sadly cut short.

In all honesty, not like any teen is going to pay attention to what the library system has to say. Nor is any parent going to promote reading a comic book. But I guess recognition is always nice.
