The best preorder rankings it's ever had came after episodes 5 and 6, which were the least "plot development" focused and most "fanservice" focused episodes of the show.

Your perception of fan reaction to it seems very skewed by western fan reaction, which is irrelevant to its sales.

Think most people were willing to give the series a grace period before turning against it, by the 8th episode of a 12 episode series it's hard not to be concern about where the series is going. Which ATM looks like nowhere. They pretty much treated a 12 episode series like it's 50 episodes, as if additional seasons are guaranteed. And I bet the audience in Japan is wondering if a 2nd season is going to happen at all.

I am not surprised by the Gargantia drop. Not sure it is just fatigue, as well there have been several episodes that are very restful and which are really taking main trope a bit too strictly. For me personally, the import is now in doubt unless the ending is really good. With just 4 episodes to pull it out, I will see. The delay to August doesn't help either, it means a long wait for the OVAs and I may not care about it by that time.

It's a case of bait and switch, the first few episode came with space mech fights but eventually the series turned out to be a harem fan service slice of life with no real plot development. Even Eureka Seven probably had more plot development by this stage, and it's a 50 episode series which started off painfully slowly. Think unless things pick up fast the sales numbers are only going to be on a downwards slope.

None of the episodes in and of themselves were bad. Each had something worthy about it. The problem is that you had 5 episodes of them back to back and really very little in the way of character development or world setting, there is little wonder that fatigue is finally setting in. Not saying that there had to be action, but there has to be a story full enough to justify 110 minutes and there hasn't.
I would not say there is very little in character development. I see quite a lot development at least for Ledo but definitely on world setting we get to see more and more, particularly the people and things they do in the fleet, but mysteries or questions raised do not get answered or even tackled much.

I think you might want to consider putting your paragraph in spoiler tag because not everyone who reads this thread is following Gargantia and such details can spoil the anime for them. Anyway, viewers in Japan also said similar things that the incident seems to happen so casually, but then it is perhaps a way for the writer to say that such thing can just happen and people always need to deal with it, and this is something for Ledo to learn too.

^ To be honest, I quite like how much time it spends on depicting one ceremony in the latest episode and I would call this a kind of refreshing treatment of tropes in anime. The thing is, this is only good if there is enough space for resolving the main plot and reveals the secrets of the world in the anime.

Had 8 occurred after the Pirate battle or as a result of dealing with the Whalesquid, I think the death would have had more meaning and this episode would have been very poignant (when you start things know that they have consequences). But in that he had a heart attack after merely being asked a question (granted a question with probable cosmic implications, but still a question) reduced the impact this scene could have had. Though I do agree that the ceremony was interesting.

^ I agree, the show is too good to end in 4 episodes. I want to know more about Gargantia and its people :(

I agree, episodes 7-8 have not been bad, just slow and it seems like pacing more appropriate for 25-26 episodes where we have time to relax and enjoy the setting, really meet the characters, understand what drives them... but I worry this show is going to be rushed to finish in 4 more episodes.

Theres no question to me Gargantia was best during Episodes 5-6, and hasn't been as entertaining since. I'm not surprised to see a drop.

Restful? Do you mean 5-6? Those episodes correlated with its best rankings ever. It's episodes 7-8 that have seen a sharp decline in rank, for reasons unknown.

^ Actually from what I read in Japanese forums, the mood for ep.7-8 is that nothing much seems to be moving, at least when it comes to revelations about questions unanswered for a lot of things, and people start to get concerned how it is going to end within one cour. That said, I am not sure just that can explain its sharp drop in rank. The extent of the fall is more like what happened after a really badly received episode was aired.

I mean the last two and agree with the Japanese forums that not much is moving. For a 12 episode (plus 3 OVA, yes) show it seems like it is not moving as fast as it must. I can't say more without spoiling in a non-episode forum so I will leave it at that but there are other plot disappointments.

Animation wise, production quality wise, still a beautiful show. The plot is what has been too slow lately and too tropey. It looked at first to be an original treatment of this trope but it is falling too much into old lines now. So I hope for a big twist...

I thought the Fate/Zero scenes were actually extra scenes like in Hollywood movies while most Bluray versions are just new versions on the Blu ray rather than extra scenes.
Well, extra scenes usually already existed in planning stage but somehow could not or dd not make it to the anime in broadcast version. In Hollywood movies, scenes are usually already made but were cut because of constraints for theater release (like length of the movie) but in anime's case the extra scenes are usually NOT made (and thus not there to cut from filmed footage) but in fact need extra effort to make into new footage to be put in the Blu-ray. So it is a bit different from the Hollywood movies. Anyway what I want to say is that extra scenes or extra details in existing scenes, Bluray version is bluray version. There is nothing like director's cut like in Hollywood.

^ I did not read about that - what do you mean by "extension screen" I wonder? But anyway in BD and DVD, there will always be adjustment and fine-tuning, some more drastic some more modest. And in an anime like Data A Live where there is more fanservice, more effort may be put in to reintroduce scenes that are censored when it is broadcast on TV.
He means "Director's Cut." Supposedly, the BDs for Date a Live will have extended scenes, much like how Fate/Zero did. There are some screenshots out there that shows some scenes not included in the TV broadcast and included in the BDs.
Here's an article, though it's from Sankaku.
Well, that I know. And "Director's Cut" is just a fancy name for the usual adjustment/addition made for BD/DVD because of 1) censorship 2) time constraint that made it not possible to have all the scenes planned to go into animation when it is broadcast on TV. The amount of addition for Date A Live may look high, but then it has happened before. So in short, the answer for the original question is Yes, simply because the so-called "director's cut" is just another name for "BD/DVD version".

Yukarin and Sumire should make for a great event for Muromi san and it is a funny show so I am not surprised by the rise in popularity. With only 3 discs for the 12-minute show it was a great move to guarantee a spot in the event if you buy all three tickets. Unless I'm mistaken most event tickets are not guarantees, you need to apply for them and not all are accepted.
