why SAO sell so good? anime is pretty average, i don't see anything special about it -_-
also Detective Conan only 49,087? shame
It depends on when Conan came out too. It might of come out on the last day of the week. Have to wait for second week for full week sales.

The novels for "Sword Art Online" are really selling...

Code;Breaker has potential, but they screwed it up in many points, not to mention the mangaka is female, i'm not trying to discriminate here, but female mangaka almost never make a solid Shounen. FT whoops CB in every aspect...except for the jiggle gangs .__.
and its those shaky shonen which are fujoshi bait which make a lot of money for anime producers. XD ao no exorcist, code breaker, kurobas(I still think from time to time...is the mangaka really male? O_O), FMA(yes, fujoshi loved it too) samurai kyo like the person above said, black butler, DRRR and so on. so while they may not make the greatest shonens....they do attract the ladies. XD
I'll be honest. The reason I started really reading Code Breaker and Black Butler was for the bishies since I usually stay away from shonen manga since I find them boring. X3
Oh and I'm looking forward to Magi too. :D I was planning reading it but now I'll watch it instead.
Knb mangaka is male. Adding to the list, don't forget CLAMP's Reservoir Chronicle (which is shonen written by females), and Katekyo Hitman Reborn.
still wondering how the hell conan is still running after 7x volumes xD
Yeah, after 7x volumes one has to wonder if Conan attracts shinigami wherever he goes.
Regarding the whole "anime is not just an advertisement" vs. "anime is just an advertisement"... the truth is somewhere in between, guys.
It's true that anime is almost always trying to push sales of something else. Manga, novels, visual novels, games, etc are pretty obvious examples. Even original anime usually hopes to push sales of figures and other merchandise. And of course anime aimed at younger audiences push this phenomenon to its limits, where home video sales are utterly beside the point and it's all about toys, toys, toys.
But I'd say a majority of anime still hope to at least recoup production costs through DVD/BD sales. And certainly a fair number of production committees have high hopes of making a hit. I don't think anyone involved with SAO intended the anime as a pure loss leader for the novels. A smash hit was expected in both formats, and plenty of other merch besides.
As for why creators don't just slap together a short one-shot anime as "enough" for the purpose of advertising? Because it's not enough. Viewers have certain expectations, and if they're not at least interested in the show, the chances of their buying whatever the anime is trying to drive sales of decreases. They don't have to be interested enough to buy it on BD, but still interested enough to watch some and seek out the source material (see Another or Kore wa Zombie Desu ka).
So yes, anime is often an advertisement, and a strategic investment, which may be treated as a loss leader or as an expected home video hit - it's taken on a case by case basis.
you just summarized my thought (which I didn't bother to type because it's too much a drag for my brain) with even better examples.

Woah, is it just me or is 50k in the first week like really bad for Conan (... and generally actually)? I mean Conan's volumes always sell around 350k-500k all in all, right? :/

Different titles? xD Hadn't heard of a light novel before o.o, but I'm glad the manga is selling well~

Of course it's just their drawing style, they don't try to make fujoshi-bait manga, I don't think any shounen-mangaka draws in a shounen manga just to draw for fujoshis. I also don't think people mind cute male characters or that art-style when there's a good plot and the characters are actually good.
Magi's MCs are colorful, but some other characters (villain and minor characters) are more Arabic-style. If you know these arabic tales then you'll find some familiar stuff while watching Magi, which makes it more fun to watch. (I have a good knowledge in these tales, from when I was a child and I read a bit more into these tales after reading Magi )
Btw we're speaking about Fujoshi and what sells here, so it's on-topic somehow. :P
Yeah, i've used this as an example before, it's like a Hentai artist, a hentai artist who likes Busty girls will draw the girls Busty, and a hentai artist who likes Lolis and is used to drawing them will make any character look like a Loli, it's just their art style, it's the way the characters are designed. Take Brave10 for example, it's mangaka is used to drawing Bishounens and BL, then she tried to make a Seinen, she didn't exactly fail, but it was heavy on the bishounen and BL stuff, now i believe it was moved to a Shojo or a Josei magazine, iirc.
But like i said, most readers don't mind the whole bishounen thing, they read it for the actual content.
Yeah, Magi, despite the female mangaka, it's fairly Shounen and its plot is interesting, and to be frank, those arabic tales are damn awesome, it's not like the generic supernatural stuff.
Well, talking about Fujoshi isn't exactly ontopic but yeah, i guess we're discussing the sales and stuff. on a side note, wasn't there an old anime about those arabic tales? i remember see'ing one somewhere...
and once again, I forgot to say that I meant that the hardcore fans for those shows are female. >_< that's a bad habit I have......
that's why I said anime producers. the manga is read by boys oh yes and like you said shounen is for everyone which is why a manga like chiyayafuru which is a josei can never reach one piece's sales. :(
because its the hardcore fans who support it and oh my gosh I'm probably gonna get a ban too I'm gonna shut up. >_< kthxbye. D:
Lol hardcore fans as in those convention attendants, doujinshi buyers and stuff? But hardcore fans are something, and consumers are something else, consumers buy the manga for reading the manga, "hardcore" fans are basically collectors and stuff. i guess you somewhat have a point and i agree with it.
and to be frank the manga is read by boys and girls xD, we're all the same foo.
also relax, no one's going to ban you, you're not breaking any rules...i think? Well it's not like you got a warning like me so...
Sep 22, 2012 5:49 AM by Downgrade355
go read Kuroshitsuji and Hetalia, those are fujoshi bait, specifically hetalia, and even then, they have a male fanbase. and i told you this before, but fujoshi will be there watching any kind of anime as long as they think it's "slashable", whatever the demographic or content maybe, wether it's shounen or shoujo or even kodomo, they'll be there.
i find Shounen boring too, but some of them are too awesome to miss out, specifically stuff like One piece, FT, Bleach, KnB, etc.
EDIT: this is a certain ban hammers i should be expecting lol, damn you guys.
and once again, I forgot to say that I meant that the hardcore fans for those shows are female. >_< that's a bad habit I have......
