Director Sato Tatsuo tweeted that he has excluded all the romance elements from Moretsu Pirates and Rinne no Lagrange. He said it's an experimental approach to compose the scripts focusing on the friendships without romance, but he believes something unexpected will be created in such an old-fashioned way.

But why is everyone posting so many spoilers in this thread?

Well, I like romance, but Chiaki will keep blushing for Marika (since it's just a friendship...) so it's ok ;)

Wasn't that a mistranslation? I heard he said there will be no male-female romance.

If that's true then I'm waiting for my Madoka x Lan ending.

About as unrealistic as having it be the complete focus of the show, which is what a vast majority of anime with teenage characters do.

That's neither here nor there as these 2 series only had romance as a minor addition to the story.

Romance as the complete focus of a story isn't unrealistic. The romance stories have been one of the driving forces in literature.

Definitely glad that Mouretsu Pirates kept some yuri at least. Where's my Chiaki x Marika romance though?

That's probs what was kept out.

But, it's still there in subtext at the least.

He lied about Moreatsu Pirates. But I am watching it cause I thought series might be a Yuri fest with no story but damn. The story is pretty damn good. The series stats slow but picks up fast. I have not been disapointed yet so director decided probably recently to keep the romance. Sometimes you can get away with it others you cannot. I was not expecting a Yuri couple. If there is a second I might drop. The first was ok because their were slight indications of it. The way it was introduced was made me keep watching. It wasn't out of nowhere and there were mild indications. Let there be a regular couple next.

He lies like a rug! He left the romance in, and he did it up right!

Seemed like this needed a bump after the last episode of Mouretsu Pirates lol

My own two cents is while every show does not need romance its also human nature and rather odd to have none at all in either of these series as these characters are all single people at the age when emotions and romance run rampant. Its like dumping one primary color out of your painting palette. Sure you can do it but all your doing is cutting out a significant key element of human nature. It doesn't have to be the main focus of the show at all but for it to be completely absent is just unrealistic.

edit-

figured this might need some background for people not following it...

Well, I'm actually glad romance not present in either of these 2 series. A good break from the usual genre and I enjoyed part 1 of Rinne no Lagrange so far.

This is great. Having romance all the time is cliche and boring and stupid. And the idiots you see on forums are always so stupidly annoying.

That yuri teaser in the beginning of the last RnL episode was funny. XD Seems that movie production club is open to shipping those two.

Not much of a problem or a loss to me, though yuri romance between Chiaki and Marika would have been a plus ^^;;

I love how people here think the romance in this topic is "Yuri", seriously, if it was the Yuri romance he eliminated, don't you think there'd be a darn riot? otakus would go rampage on the producers's arses.

Someone's not seen the sales of your average yuri anime...
