The beginning was kind of weak with those girl-ish talks of shopping/finger nails/ etc, but towards the middle to on end makes up for the manga.

It's good overall, I even learn a small simple lesson; find someone who you could love instead of someone who love's you haha.

At the moment is the best romance manga with the best ending I've read so far.

The ecchi almost shows below the waist. Only two volumes and the romance is kind of good.

Chapter 9, he is getting rape? wtf "he's all warm inside me"

Doesn't make much sense sometimes. Cliche. Not a happy ending.

Besides that it reads like a typical asian horror.

Every time I hear anything about Psyren the remarks are always positive and the fans say it's good but it will never get adapted into an anime. I could point out a lot of things Psyren did right but instead I am going to explain why Psyren will not or should not get adapted into anime anytime soon in the near future. The story and characters are not amazing, convincing, or compelling. But don’t let me stop you though, anime and manga should be seen or read as much as possible because a decrease in fan amount is bad. If you have any questions, comments, or want to talk I don’t mind if you come post on my profile. I wanted to just bash Psyren and rant rant rant and rant on but I tried my best to be as nice as possible in this review. I did bash the shounen genre though, teehee. This is a long review that assumes you've already read all of the manga

[Story, 3/10]
Right at the start you are introduced to Ageha and he's a brash, reckless hero person. There's not much difference between Ageha and other shounen main characters like Naruto. He does not care about the world at first but quickly flips his attitude when he has the chance to do something about it, like saving it. When a guy like him says the usual "I want to train so I can defeat the bad guys" it means this will likely be an average shounen manga/anime. The manga gets predictable the moment you are aware of this. He trained a couple times throughout the story, and the last training was inside a time extending area like the one that exist in Dragon Ball Z.

The beginning of the manga (volume 1 before exiting Psyren's world for the first time) is the most interesting compared to the rest of the manga. You see Ageha meet some characters and there's an aura of mystery that makes you want to keep reading. They've all just been transported to a post apocalyptic world and needs to survive. Where are they? Who is the enigmatic Nemesis Q who has the power to do this to them and what does he or she want? All of what I've just said in this paragraph is the best arc of the manga because the manga goes downhill after that arc. Well that's because Nemesis Q is an idiot. She is indifferent and makes bad decisions to everyone at the beginning. But maybe it's because the manga had to be rushed to end, but I don't know when exactly at what volume or chapters the rush started to happen.

Nemesis Q randomly chooses and throws dozens of people to and back from the dangerous world of Psyren giving them only minimal information just to satisfy her curiosity about what will happen in the Psyren world. The cards the participants had did not have enough useful information. Most have died, and for the remaining who survived long enough which is anyone who wears plot armor Nemesis Q eventually ask them for help to save her. If she outright started telling everyone they can use powers, how dangerous the Psyren world is, and what she really wanted she would have saved a lot of time and trouble so it does not make sense why she did not. She could have just talked directly to them by magical telepathy powers instead of waiting. Apparently surviving the Psyren game multiple times gains her trust and only until she’s in danger will she tell the participants who are still alive what she wants. Nemesis Q and the villains are terrible at thinking and making decisions.

Eventually you learn that the good guys can use Psi powers, and there are bad guys who can use it too. The bad guys want to destroy the world and start a new one with only Psi users and monsters who will be their slaves. They've been experimented on but have broken out of a lab and are emotionally and physically hurt from the world abusing them. A lot of the baddies give speeches about their behaviors like, "My pain is more than yours so you cannot possibly understand me!" or "No one likes me therefore I'll kill anyone who doesn't like me. I'll follow our main bad guy leader or any bad guy if they like me" and even "I wonder if I have any purpose in life because I feel useless to the world. I have such an existential crisis. I’m grateful these bad guys came along and gave me a purpose, the task to be a bad guy and kill. Thank you for making me feel good and useful, bad guy comrades!" If you've seen or read Naruto, this should be really familiar to you. Later on you meet the bad guy's sister who had refused to team up with him. She tells him once at the beginning, then once more at the end that he's doing bad stuff. The second time finally made him have a change of heart and he stops being a bad guy. He rounds up his underlings and starts to try to live some other way, without being so villainous. Family problems like Naruto. The dialogue is cheesy and silly, but maybe that’s just fan translation quality issues.

The bad guys lost to the good guys because the bad guys are dumb and lazy. They could have achieved their goals so easily if they just kill all the good guys immediately but the bad guys let the good guys get away. The first time was when the main bad guy just walks away from many of the good guys, including main character, as the good guys rescued their injured friend who’s been taken hostage. At this point of the story the main bad guy, Amagi who is a mass murderer, realizes that the good guys are aware of his plan and his evil intention. Amagi has no problem killing anyone he wanted dead but somehow was nice just this once and defended himself from the good guys. He attacked a kid in self defense, didn’t even kill the kid, stares at good guys, acknowledges the good guys existence, and then just walks away without killing anyone. Why would he let those who have the potential powers to oppose him live?

Amagi’s best henchmen’s finds out about the good guys and decides to fight the good guys. Obviously it would be too easy if the bad guys just show up in mass numbers and overwhelm the good guys so the bad guys only fight one on one or one bad guy vs a couple good guys. Bad guys are easily defeated every time because of this. One bad guy, Star Commander Shiner, even thought it was a great idea to leave the good guys alone until they get stronger because he so wanted to get his own ass kick. Another guy, the ice power Commander, wants to fight by himself vs two good guys. He started losing and becomes suicidal seriously urging the other bad guys not to interfere with his fight because his life purpose is to fight and it makes him feel special, needed, and useful so don’t come help or he’ll get extremely mad if he didn’t die. The conversation between every good and bad guy encounter is like this:

Scene#1
Bad guy, “Buwhahaha! I’m so much better and stronger than you. I can kill you so easy in one attack but I’ll have a little fun first and test you out.”
Good guy, “Damn he’s so strong! How can I win against such an opponent?”
Bad guy, “Do not worry I should have died a long time ago for being stupid but here I’ll prove it once again to you right now it is still true. I’ll give you my exquisite plot armor because I like you and like fighting you. Wear it and accumulate its power then come and try to kill me again!”
Scene#2
Good guy, “Time passed and I’ve gotten stronger from training. Ahahaha today’s your day to die villain scum!”
Bad guy, “Oh no! How can this possibly be that you can defeat me? If only I didn’t have amnesia I would remember that I gave that ridiculously overused plot armor to you and I’d be able to figure out how you are just about to defeat me.”

How could this small group of 5 to probably 15 even destroy the world? They don’t work together and don’t even care about each other’s wellbeing. The top bad guys die dropping left and right and at the bad guy’s base they just yawn and lazed around. Their attempt to take over the world should have ended with 1 nuclear bomb straight at them, or about 7 for each bad guy if they all split up to destroy continents of cities. The story should have stopped right there.

The good guys aren’t too bright either. When they needed to get information from a heavily guarded secret government lab they decided to wear dark outfits to infiltrate the lab but the main character, Ageha, asked “why black outfits?” on the choice of clothing. Ageha and co wanted to sneak inside to the lab but then they proceeded to attack every guard they see there. They went to get a security card from a technician so they can open doors but they smashed through walls to get there. They did not need the card but think they did.

You also learn that Ageha’s father is strangely young looking for his age at 47. Ageha’s father can transform super sayain, changing his hair color and have a flaming aura. He later gives this power to Ageha by training him in a time extending place just like in DBZ, Goku and Gohan. Many good guy characters like him will appear out of nowhere without a clue to you to team fight against bad guys. Earlier than this Ageha also trained was when he asked a kid, Marie, how she can use her power so well. The trick is, according to her, you need to think about what you want to do with your powers before you use it. It was hard to imagine why Ageha never thought of doing anything like this while using his powers. He’s not good at thinking otherwise he’d only need to train twice. I wanted to think the problem with Ageha’s retardism was just another poor fan translation too, but I doubt it is translation error since other characters aren’t that smart. He trained so much in the manga it was boring reading how he power ups.

As you can see, the ideas in Psyren aren’t fresh and original nor are they well thought out at all. Here’s a list of other problems the manga have. Instead of just ruling over the Earth as it is with all the wealth, they destroy everything and chose to rule over it as a wasteland. The bad guys killed so many people on the planet that I think they only have a few female companions, about 1 female to about 5 males, to have sex with if they want to continue their dominance on Earth. I do not think the bad guys can or want to breed with their mindless slave monsters. The good guys make their own food but I never see the bad guys eat which is funny because the bad guys made the world a wasteland. When a good guy wanders out in the desolate/dessert areas for days nothing about water or food is mention but the characters continue living. There is no vegetation or animals for large areas and only monsters. There’s no way to compare two fighters. Some characters have powers that don’t make sense at all on how it works, and why those characters never use it again when it seems like using that skill would be a guarantee win every time. A girl’s scythe illusion is an example of this power, you see it use once and never again. It makes the bad guys think they’ve won in the illusion leaving them vulnerable to the girls attack. You just have to wait until the plot kills a character. She could have defeated all the human size bad guys by herself because the bad guy’s like to fight 1v1. Even then, only bad guys and nameless characters die. No good guys ever die because they always get healed or come back to life in some way. The super powers compare in Psyren are definitely cooler than in Naruto though, but comparing powers between characters in Psyren was impossible. At least Psyren was better in regards to making female characters not just more relevant, but strong enough to fight the big fights.

I felt bad for the mangaka when s/he said s/he wanted to continue the manga forever. The only reason the manga was even able to be as long as it is, is because the author made the people of earth, the villains, and Nemesis Q stupid allowing the author to stretch the manga’s length. The attempt to become like the big three, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach is serious competition so when a director says Naruto isn’t doing well I see no reason Psyren should get adapted to compete with the current shounens when it’s pretty much the same thing. The author had thought about what the weakness was on his or her last manga. I’d say the weakness is storytelling and characters, especially the villains.

Art is what Psyren is good at. Post apocalyptic drawing of old, destroyed buildings and the wasteland was detailed. There’s also as much explosions in Psyren as there is in DBZ from fighting. Unfortunately art is also why Psyren won’t get adapted into anime. Psyren is like Naruto, long, idiotic characters and plot, no ninja’s, super powers but more flashy thus more expensive than even Naruto to animate and remember Naruto’s not doing well according to someone. To animate the fight scenes and surroundings would take a bigger budget which means adapting Psyren is just a big risk. I’d say wait until the fans have forgotten about Naruto. But who knows, kids like thinking they are gonna be a superhero and will save the world right? That’s what Psyren is, high school kids saving the world. I could be wrong, maybe Psyren could still succeed if it was animated despite Naruto still airing.

Of the four kids, Fredericka and Marie were fun to read even though they were not unique characters. Marie has a crush on Ageha and it’s played on for comedy. I didn’t want to compare Psyren to Naruto so much but there are just too many similarities. The good guys have a hidden power in them like Naruto. Sometimes it’s a monster; sometimes it’s a secret super power. Thank god only one good guy had a sad character background, but all of the bad guys have a sad past.

Before exiting the Psyren world for the first time, I enjoyed the manga to an extent but continuing to read the manga was tedious. The only other interesting thing about Psyren is how doing something in the world affects the Psyren world which happens just twice in the entire manga.

Started this manga about 15 years ago.

My school had a few of these, I think I read like 3 volumes.

-Wow at first I thought the guy is stupid, then I thought he was actually a crazy masochist, then maybe he's just a regular criminal pervert then turns out he's got the crazy.

-he accepts and beings to be crazy once he broke up with Nanako

-I thought Aku no Hana was simply crazy, but turns out she's just bored of society.

-chapter 20 or so- I smell a love triangle catfight!

-dropped at chapter 36 as it got boring.

SPOILERS ALERT:

I think the girl was crazy because she was just bored but it's clear the guy follows along with the desire to save her. When the manga ends from the middle school arc and main character gets older, which is after the festival chapter, it gets boring. Boring because I thought there may be a higher and interesting idea behind all this craziness but turns out those characters are just boring, and that they don't want to be shallow/average people.

I have a vague idea why Les Fleurs du Mal is constantly reference but I'm not a very creative and abstract person so I do not fully understand how this relates to the manga.

The more I think about this manga though, the more I think it's actually so stupid. The literature the manga references is fine but the people the literature represents are stupid.
