Synopsis

In a world ravaged by ice and snow, civilization is on the brink of collapse, thanks to the elusive Ice Witch. Fighting against the cold has brought out the worst in humanity, leading to cults, violence, and the persecution of the "Blessed"—those born with supernatural powers.

Agni and Luna—blessed orphans with regenerative powers—are making the best of their situation within a small society of elders; their affection for each other serves as a distraction from the uninhabitable climate. Nevertheless, what little serenity they have is stolen away when army commander Doma passes through and incinerates the village they are seeking refuge in—Agni's beloved sister included. Doma's flames do not extinguish until they have reduced their target to ash, and due to Agni's remarkable regeneration, he remains ablaze and in constant, excruciating pain.

After nearly a decade of enduring the pain, Agni has conditioned himself to tolerate Doma's flames. However, his burning vengeance is as fierce as it was on the day Luna was taken from him. As Agni traverses a frozen wasteland, he vows to avenge his sister and kill Doma.

Fire Punch was published in English by VIZ Media under the VIZ Signature imprint from January 16, 2018 to October 15, 2019.

During the series' circulation, Takarajimasha bestowed the series third place in its ranking of manga for male readers in their guidebook Kono Manga ga Sugoi! In 2017, Fire Punch garnered attention on the internet for its shock value. Shortly after, the series was nominated for the 10th Manga Taisho award.

This is not your typical shounen manga, which is the point of it being published on Jump+.

Story is very different and unexpected, even edgy at times. You will also be bombarded with movie references (as the author is a big cinephile).

The art style is top notch. Most people are not aware, but Fujimoto’s assistants were very experienced people in the manga industry (Spy x Family, Dandadan, Hell’s Paradise, Centuria). So having so many great minds here, you can expect greatness!

I think what defines this manga is the interactions between the characters as well as…pain. The psychological aspect of this manga should not be neglected.

Finished up Fire Punch last night. Honestly, despite the weird, edgy, sometimes incestuous undertones, it's really freaking good. It's a bit heavy-handed with the themes, but Fujimoto really did convey a very visceral story on how we as people twist/warp legends, stories, ideologies, and myths to our own benefit to fit a narrative to justify terrible acts of violence, among other things.

Ironically enough the author faces the same issue as the main character of this manga. When your single goal turns out to no longer be achieveable you find yourself stuck in confusion. But unlike the main character, the author couldn't find a new point of focus and thus created multiple ideas which were never really commited to.
