Synopsis

After the death of his parents, a young Mirai Kakehashi is left in the care of his abusive relatives. Since then, he has become gloomy and depressed, leading him to attempt suicide on the evening of his middle school graduation. Mirai, however, is saved by a pure white girl named Nasse who introduces herself as a guardian angel wishing to give him happiness—by granting him supernatural powers and a chance to become the new God.

In order to earn the position, he must defeat 12 other "God Candidates" within 999 days. Soon, Mirai begins a struggle to survive as a terrifying battle royale erupts between himself and the candidates looking to obtain the most power in the world.

Background

Platinum End was simultaneously published in English by VIZ Media and through MANGA Plus on the same day as the Japanese release. The volumes were published by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint from October 4, 2016 to March 1, 2022. The series has also been published in French by Kazé since May 25, 2016, in Spanish by Norma Editorial since March 9, 2017, and in Portuguese by Devir since May 6, 2017.

Extremely interesting concept for a story, the plot did it justice to an extent; there were times where I was somewhat bored, but this was eventually made up by something happening that had me on the edge of my seat. The biggest issue with Platinum End is that some things are dragged on (like fights) the dialogue in particular. I mention fights, but Platinum End is NOT a battle manga, dialogue is actually the most important part of Platinum End; when it isn't being dragged on it is very engaging, every character provides a different take or expands upon what another said in their own ...

After the terrible and untimely passing of his parents and younger brother, Mirai was forced to live with his violent uncle and aunt. Later, he makes the decision to terminate his life before being spared and granted a second opportunity by Nasse, one of the thirteen angels sent by God. She tells him that before the old God retires in nine hundred and ninety days, he must compete against twelve other God contenders. From this point on, Mirai must start again and determine whether or not his second shot at life is worth fighting for.

This Manga is underwhelming, in its premise, its execution of the core themes and its progression of plot and characters . It is not outright bad, though there is a lot left to be desired from Platinum end. Even without comparing it to the previous work of the manga creators, Death Note, this manga does not add any significant creative value in the battle royal, psychological action Shounen space. I'd rather check out Future Diary, and that is already a worrying bar to fail to meet.
