I never thought this work would worm its way into my reading selection. I saw a recommendation for Onanie Master Kurosawa when I was reading some manga I was previously following, and I decided to check it out. The synopsis was interesting, so I decided to check it out. What I got was a 31-chapter extravaganza that was enjoyable to the downright end.

The story had a great pull on me. What I mean is that the beginning was so erratically different than the stereotypical manga, it made me want to read the whole thing. I mean, anyone would be intrigued/disgusted with the prospect of reading ... a manga about a boy masturbating in a girl's restroom. However, past the strange beginning lies a story filled with hope and tragedy. Each situation that occurs just has some special charm where when the end of said situation approaches, you just want to root for Kurosawa and how awesome he can be. Onanie Master Kurosawa has that kind of story that sucks you into a world of despair with a hero trying to swat it all away. That's the kind of story I want to read from every manga like this.

This series had a strange art feel to it. It might just be my own personal tastes, but I disliked the shading style of Onanie Master Kurosawa. The beginning didn't sit well with my artistic tastes. However, I began to appreciate the subtle details shading could bring to a manga such as this. I started to like things such as the facial features of characters. Most manga use fine pens to ink in lines and holes to create a face, and they do look beautiful. However, Onanie Master Kurosawa lacks that resolve, but still manages to bring emotion and life into each person. That's because the faces all have distinctive faces that display emotion better than detailed drawing could do. As such, the art style grew on me tremendously, to the point where I liked it just as much as modern day art drawings.

If there's one thing to love Onanie Master Kurosawa for, it would by far be the characters and character development. Out of everything I've ever read so far, this manga has showed me the greatest character development ever. The original cast was good enough, with Kakeru Kurosawa as a disheveled teenager with a multitude of problems, along with Aya Kitahara who shows an assertive demeanor in comparison to her public personality where she gets bullied by other girls. The list continues on, but Kurosawa and KItahara are the star players. As the manga continues and other characters become important in the story, both Kurosawa and Kitahara undergo the greatest amount of change I've ever seen in characters thus far. Kurosawa, an emotionless husk, learns about the people around him and changes for the better, whilst Kitahara treads on a downward spiral towards insanity. The immense amount of development these two characters get still awes me. I was rooting for Kurosawa the whole way, too, because he seemed like a great tragic hero to cheer on for. His ideology, though twisted due to being an introvert, gets a massive upheaval in the ending chapters of Onanie Master Kurosawa. I have never wanted to cry so much for such a tragic hero before. These all culminate into the greatest set of characters I've seen for now.

Combining all these facts together left me with a thoroughly enjoyable manga that well deserves a 10 out of 10. I seriously had a blast reading this manga. It well deserved a full score, for it intrigued me the whole way. The story had an interesting twist on the psychological genre that really made my day, since I like authors playing with the notion of psychology. It gives the manga a lot of material to work with, and Onanie Master Kurosawa certainly used it. The art might not appeal to everyone, and I understand if it doesn't suit people's tastes. However, after about 20 chapters in, you'll start to grow attached to the art style, if not earlier. The characters, by far, were the most amazing thing to come out of this series. I loved the development everyone went through, especially Kurosawa and Kitahara. The character cast was also great, but I feel the development wins out by a sliver. All in all, read Onanie Master Kurosawa. It's a great play on psychology that takes you into a mature world of middle schoolers and their daily lives and thoughts. If you were a middle schooler, you might just relate to the joys and pains of everyone in Onanie Master Kurosawa.

[SUMMARY]

Onanie Master kurosawa is a story about about a boy named Kurosawa Kakeru who is in Middle school and therefore is going trough puberty, he is somewhat of a loner who thinks of himself as an elitist (a person who thinks is superior to others in status) this will lead him to commit mistakes, and later on he will be challanged to confront them.

[COMMENTARY]

When I first started reading kurosawa, I got a feeling of familiarity which drove me back to my early days of middle school. If we described this story in a more slang-ish way, ... Id say this is sort of a "Edgy teen meets 1st world problems", but hold on because its much more than that.
As we delve into the world its settled who kurosawa is, what he is doing, his occupation, the world building and the characters surrounding him, and then its presented to us the dillema.

So far so good for kurosawa with a dirty yet interesting story, being able to grasp such morality issues like our personality, honesty, social activity and mainly every teen problem ever. Normally when people are faced with such a thing as Teen problems they expect something incredibly cheesy and simple minded, with overflowing melodrama, however not in this case.

Kurosawa manages to have a clear and realistic view on what is puberty and what it makes us do, it doesnt need much drama, half of the time Kurosawa is making subtle comedic references to for eg. Code Geass, Case Closed.. etc. and its really clever when showing us the plans kurosawa comes up with, to the point you actually get ingrossed in it no matter how silly it is, you are allways left with a thrilling feeling that even if you think kurosawa is going to succeed, you´ll allways doubt the outcoming. For the first half of the story you are left with a michievous and sharp kurosawa, and dark and evil kitahara, a sweet takigawa whom kurosawa found interest in, a nice and soft nagaoka, and the rest are yet to be explored at all, which is fine because they will adress it later.

One of the greatest things about kurosawa is how the writter portrays the characters who normally would be stereotyped as the evil doers, and belive me theres enough twists here to make you dizzy, at some point you´ll be left caring for everyone simply because they become a part of you, egs. going from Sugawa to others,.

I remember that as a kid I liked to create fantasies, worlds, and much other stuff, I was rather creative person, when I reached middle school I had that thing you call the "edgy syndrome", this meaning that I liked to be the misterious guy and closed myself from the world around, I thought of myself as a superior, but I was clearly wrong.. This is what kurosawa shows us, you cant live alone, theres nothing good about it, when you open yourself there will be pain, there will incidents, but thats a part of life.

Normally when you watch those shounens where the MC is normally this really special kid that is like super strong and misterious, well kurosawa contradicts it, if anything it criticizes it, in really well executed way, without having to directly bash it, not only it criticizes shounen like it criticizes teenagers in general.

You are human, you love, you care, you feel atracted for, and mainly you want to remain in constant contact with other humans and beings in general, everything feels much more natural, and youll find yourself smiling most of the time.

The only problem I could see with Kurosawa is how kitahara seemingly recovered way too fast from a depressin, well even then the mangaka did it well, still time skip is time skip and it fucking sucks..

Other than that Kurosawa is a great Doujin who has great characters, realistic overview on puberty, bullying and other teen problems, and a solid ending, give this one a try romance lovers!

" Tch, 'I'm coming! I'm coming! '? Blablablabla Weeweewawa, every single one of them is fucking noisy. Whatever, you bunch of scumbags. I still have to go to the girl's toilet for my 'I'm cumming! I'm cumming!' pleasure". This humorous line said by one of my favorite characters of all time, Kurosawa, describes the personality of the pathetic version of himself: a reprobate who looks down on others and adopts a isolationist doctrine; and a revolting good-for-nothing who sexualizes almost every girl he sees and has this weird fetish of jacking off to his imagination of them in the school's girl's bathroom. "Such a deplorable ... oddball is perfect for the comedy manga that Onanie Master Kurosawa is!" This initial opinion which I had was in fact, wrong.

Onanie Master Kurosawa is so much more than an eccentric comedy -- which you are made to believe that it is in the first few chapters. Rather than a comedy, it is a realistic and heartbreaking story which covers serious topics under a premise which at the start, may seem absurd. To be specific, it's Kurosawa's journey of transitioning from a pathetic loser to a normal human being. I cannot bring myself to spoil this amazing story which unfolds chapter by chapter but what I can say is that this manga follows a standard which I believe should be upheld by all serious stories: the standard of having a reason for everything. Kurosawa's daily duties (jacking off everyday in the girl's toilet) had a reason. Kurosawa's regression to a truly pathetic state had a reason. Kurosawa's shot at redemption had a reason. Many of the things which should have been ineffable were surprisingly, effable.

To reiterate myself, Onanie Master Kurosawa covers pretty serious topics. Without spoiling anything, I will now try my best to explain the serious topics which this manga covers: the pains of unrequited love and as cliche as it may seem, the importance of having friends.

First and foremost, I will expound on the pains of unrequited love. This topic is perfectly covered through the lens of Kurosawa and Kitahara. Kurosawa and Kitahara fell in love with their respective interests and felt strongly for them. Kurosawa even felt pain in his heart, erected his pole until one could literally call it a metal flag pole and vomited at the thought of jacking off to his love interest because he truly loved her. Kurosawa and Kitahara felt happy with this new-found love until they found that this feelings will never be reciprocated. Unrequited love hurts. I can relate to it. You just want to seek revenge on your lover and you feel that it is unfair that they are happy while you're suffering in this envy and pain. The 2 of them had similar feelings but the difference between them and us is that they had a way to hurt them without being found out and because they had a way, they took it. Unrequited love played a huge part in Kurosawa's character progression and the effects (which I cannot mention) led to the emotional journey of Kurosawa's shot at redemption.

The relatability to the 2 of their feelings made it realistic and hence, allowed the story to explore more about unrequited love and the effects of it, which in turn, leads to my next topic: the importance of friends. The importance was highlighted by comparing the different paths taken by Kurosawa and Kitahara when both of them were rejected by society. Both of them were lonely and felt pain from the harassment, but both of them took different steps to go about it and the results showed how important friends are. Kurosawa, the man who once rejected the thought of having friends and was even disgusted by it, realized the importance of it when he was lonely in this world. The man who thought that others' opinion of himself were trivial realized that he absolutely hated being hated by everyone. He could not stand this rejection but when someone befriended him, he was thankful from the bottom his heart. Having a companion helped him get through the harassment. Having a friend made him happy, rather than only sad in a world where everyone condemned him. On the other hand, Kitahara, who also faced harassment, took a different route -- the lonely route. She did not seek companionship; she merely sought revenge. She rejected Kurosawa's attempt at becoming her friend and she continued her journey in being lonely. As a result, she may felt dejected and was at the brink of insanity, while Kurosawa changed for the better. The significance difference in the results from the routes they took from the similar experience they faced made me feel now feel grateful for having friends.

Just an honourable mention before I end this review: the manga's art and the gamut of references perfectly fit the dark, yet comedic tone of the manga.

Ultimately, Onanie Master Kurasawa is not perfect. I just had one problem with it: the cast is small and only Kurosawa received a lot of character development. However, it is just a minor problem because the manga is short, the cast is still likeable and Kurasawa is an S-tier rank character. I had wonderful experience reading Onanie Master Kurasawa; it was funny, emotional, deep and original. I definitely recommend it to everyone. In my opinion, it is a solid 10/10

Funny story about this, I was just scrolling through twitter and I randomly came across this manga and I decided, hey, this looks interesting and here I am with a new favorite manga.

Anyway, on to the review.

Story: 10/10

Without a doubt the story is fantastic. It took what appeared to be a pretty perverted premise, and turned it into actually something amazing, which could easily have gone the other way around. Whether we like it or not, stuff like masturbation is a legitimate part of any adolescent boy's childhood, and it fits perfectly for a coming of age story like this, however uncomfortable the topic may ... be to some. Like I said, it's easy to turn this into some sort of perverted, ecchi mess, but in reality it used that dirty, dirty act to fuel the story of a boy who's essentially reached his lowest, due to acting on his sense of justice the only way a horny boy like him could.

The twists in the story aren't exactly the most shocking or unpredictable, but the way they are set up and written led me to feel it when it actually happened. I actually felt the exact same as our main character, the pain, the joy, the hope, everything, all within a short 31 chapters, might I add.

Each and every event is set up and arranged so that when certain character developments happen, it works, and it never comes out of the blue( I will expound on this in the characters portion). Also, that ending went exactly as i'd hoped it gone. I'm very satisfied with the outcome because of how it represents our MC's growth.

All in all, this story could've easily been trash, but it managed to become something amazing.

Art: 8/10

The art style is very good. I don't have much complaints since I'm not good at judging this stuff aside from how it compliments the story and characters, and in that field, it does it very well.

The artwork isn't intense and hyper detailed like one you'd see out of an action manga, but rather it's simple, and when needed to, it became dark and disturbing. Reminds me of my previous favorite manga Welcome to the NHK. Both are pretty grim in its tone, but it doesn't feel like it's trying to do that effect. I'm not gonna say any more since this really isnt my forte at critiques, but from my own limited understanding of how artists do the art for a comic, I'd say it's very well done.

Character: 10/10

The characters in this story are great. Not every single character is particularly deep, but they not only serve their purpose well in the story, but they also come across as likeable and interesting. Sugawa, Takigawa and Nagaoka are perfect examples of this. They do have their own fair share of character growth, ones that are earned and make sense in the story, and they are dedicated enough time so that the reader would understand their feelings, but the story also knows that they aren't the main focus of the story. Takigawa's backstory is not meant to be shown to give her more depth, but it's to serve as a way to understand events surrounding her that lead to the development of our main character Kurosawa.

In fact, despite what the last few chapters may make you think, Kitahara is not a protagonist either, she fits similar to Takigawa, whose own story(although in Kitahara's case it wasn't a backstory), served as a catalyst for Kurosawa's development. They not only functioned to add a level of depth to her character, but they also, actually, they mainly served as drive for our MC's development.

That said, the main character himself, Kurosawa Kakeru, is an amazing protagonist. Admittedly, he reminds me a lot about myself(minus his weird fetish). The struggles he goes through throughout the series are ones that relate to me, and I guess subtracting his choice to be alone, I even relate to his slight superiority complex. Many of his situations are just more extreme versions of ones I've found myself in. What I mean is that the situations he finds himself are ones that if you asked yourself what you would do, and took those questions and applied them to a situation in your ow life, chances are it'd still apply. Honestly I love how they go straight to the point with his character. Instead of constantly giving us a back and forth about his feelings and decisions, they make it a point to make sure that we always see some sort of important event that moves the story forward, and it is because of that that Kurosawa's problems never feel tiring, which is a complaint I have with even some of my favorite manga. Even ones I consider near masterpieces suffer from dragging out the issues these characters face for a bit too long, and it damages my investment in them. All in all, I found a character who I can strongly relate to and I find myself always enjoying his development, and watching him learn life lessons and actually applying them put a smile on my face.

Enjoyment: 10/10

My enjoyment of this manga exceeded far beyond my expectations. I was invested in every chapter, none were ever boring, and everything felt necessary. I loved it, and I will reread it again at some point.

Overall, with a strong main character and supporting cast, a perfectly paced story, and a lot of themes and lessons that resonate with me, Onanie Master Kurosawa has become, as of this moment, and likely months or even years to come, my favorite manga.

This is the discount bum version of Aku no Hana at it's drunkest, sprawled on the floor in a pile of his own upchuck. I'm seriously amazed this manga has been showered with so much acclaim. Both stories are remarkably similar, as both protagonists are engaging in perverted acts, and both are blackmailed by a maladjusted four-eyes. It's infinitely easier to take AnH more seriously and it remains a solid dark drama and interesting character study—OMK has... some of those elements, but it's really impossible for a story about a chronic masturbator who has the same dopey expressions and (eventually) idealistic personality as Mob from ... Mob Psycho to not become a goofy, cringe-inducing comedy. Maybe an art film director like Tsai Ming-Liang could pull it off, but this is a low-budget and low-brow doujinshi manga.

OMK is repetitious and poorly paced—we get a little too acquainted with the MC while he takes care of business—not being a prude here; it's simply boring to sit through. Writing is mostly mediocre. You have the same old bullying scenarios and shoddy characters. The art is atrocious and often unrefined, if not unfinished.

While AnH's protagonist is a pretentious snob who looks down on everyone because he has a book of Baudelaire's poems, our dashing lead in this train wreck doesn't have any character quirks other than being in the same company as the canonical masturbator Onan of biblical fame (if only Kurosawa could have been struck dead by God, too). That's it. Obviously the guy needs some character development, and he does eventually develop, but it's via a ham-fisted Mob-esque redemption arc. I don't think it's really a spoiler to state that the MC's dirty deeds are eventually unearthed by the rest of the school.

The idiot actually is like "Nah, it's cool... I'll just act chill and eventually everyone will be friends with me." And, well... he's right... Everyone is a little grossed out, but now that he's (ahem) cleaned his hands of his past acts, he's doing just fine.

The relationship between him and the blackmailer is probably the most interesting part of the story, and she has her own interpersonal issues, but she disappears prematurely, and a romance between the MC and another girl emerges out of the blue as the most important development, and this is just thrown in for the sake of him being fully "redeemed." Everything is okay. It doesn't matter if everyone in the school knows you were masturbating in the girl's bathroom or on the panties of various girls. It'll all be great in the end if you're a go-getter. Who the hell wrote this? A boomer? You just walk in there, Look 'em in the eye, and give them a firm handshake. : ^)

I'm embarrassed to even admit I finished this series. I need a bath, and so does the whole world, because of the existence of this manga. Forget the rainbows; we need a cataclysmic flood.

A lot of good disappointment, sorrow, anxiety...

You find yourself rooting for a disgusting, two-faced boy. How could anything be worse than that?

Better yet, when you see these horrible bullies, you want him to dish out justice, pain.

You can't feel remorse for these bullies. You love it, you relish in their sorrow.

You know that karma goes around, but the feeling right now is an utter delicacy. It's delicious.

The climax of the story will have you wailing and crashing straight down a roller-coaster. It's good.

I didn't think I liked it the first time I picked it up. I was laughing at every panel, scene, supposed seriousness...

Then it got me, reeled me in. The series took off with Kurosawa as your cruel, yet inspiring pilot.

When he hurts, you hurt. When he is scared, you are as well. Whatever you feel, he is almost thinking the same way.

You feel him.

-Story: Simply fantastic. No words can describe it. Read it. Read it and experience it for yourself. The feeling is to be shared with no one, but you and the beloved Kurosawa.

-Art: Fair, easy to look at but not amazing. The characters are distinguishable, save for the girls. They all look the same. No matter!

-Character: Top-notch. The cruelest are whom you are rooting for. The good? They are equally as bad, as cruel. This series has got it all, the sickening true face of humanity. We are all bad. We are all good. The character development is divine. They realize things themselves and somehow pull themselves out of each of his or her own self-made turmoil.

-Enjoyment: IT WAS GREAT. I am not one who is crazy for romance, but I wanted Kurosawa to get with who he wanted. I wanted him to reach his goals. If you read Onani Master, you will definitely be enjoying the ride. Don't forget your seat-belts!

-Overall: 8/10 based on calculator. I'd give it a 9.

I originally started reading Onani as a joke. I thought, for sure, this must be the worst story in the world. I was dead wrong. It was incredible how captivating it was. The characters were the most realistic I have ever seen outside of real life. I felt this in my heart, it grasps at you. It makes you feel weak and vulnerable. It makes you feel like you can fix yourself.

The art itself is as if it was only done half-way through, to the sketching phase. It won't subtract from your experience, you won't even be able to notice the art.

The plot-line ... is amazing, it's realistic and sensible. It's very serious and unique. I can't believe it was supposed to be a parody. I can almost say that I feel enlightened.

The characters are unique and there are your stereotypical groups, but they certainly do not turn out the way you expect them to.

I enjoyed this manga as entertainment as well as a life lesson. I can only hope to be able to stand up to my dark secrets as this art has portrayed possible.

Onanie Master Kurosawa. I wasn't very interested in it at first, as I wasn't particularly interested in a guy jerking off. Anyway, glad that I did pick it up, it was a good read.

This type of art was pretty refreshing to see, and for me it felt as it really fitted for the story. It gave a more realistic feeling to it, making the characters more realistic. You may also review it on art alone, which obviously wouldn't be too great, however I thought this type of art was very fitting for it.

I liked the fact that the behaviour of the character were pretty realistic: ... it was supported by the art style, as well as the reactions/actions of the characters.

The story was actually good. I liked the fact that his "path of redemption" began to be slightly visible halfway through the story, with a progressive buildup. Which in turn, I think, gives it a more realistic feeling to the story (comparing to other manga's I have read, where they changed almost immediately, giving it a less realistic feeling. Most people can't change drastically their behaviour without making small steps to achieve it).

I enjoyed this manga, definitely worth reading it.

Give this manga a try.
When I picked it up, I had no expectations, in fact I hated the MC and how vulgar everything was presented in the story, almost like the writer was a complete weirdo, but when it ended I felt satisfied with encountering a story like this one.
It has a good sense of direction, and the lenght is perfect for what its trying to convey, it isn't trying to be the best drama/psychological manga out there, it simply is a story with emotional baggage that most losers would understand.
In short, don't think too much about it and give it a try, I personally ... do not regret it.

Onani Master Kurosawa literally translates to Masturbation Master Kurosawa. As hard as it may be to believe, this manga is brilliantly written and yes, it does relate to masturbation but no, it is in no way pornographical in content, nor is it an ecchi series. It is very much a story of hope and change.

The main character in this story is Kurosawa, a 14 year old male in middle school who could be described as somewhat of an introvert. He doesn't have many friends, nor does he want them. He's never been in love, nor does he want to. He doesn't seem to have any ... goals or aspirations either. Each day, he goes to the third floor female toilets to do his "daily routine"; to put it crudely, he masturbates to his female classmates. A progression of events eventually leads our main character into being blackmailed into helping someone enact revenge.

Initially, the story isn't very serious - in fact, it's comedic and quite light heartened. It parodies many series (which hardcore anime fans should be able to recognise) Death Note prominent among them, complete with "just as planned faces", hence it being affectionately titled by fans "Fap Note". He uses plans much like Kira would, except he isn't a hero doing something which he believes to be beneficial to the world - instead, he's just an insignificant, powerless person who through masturbation pettily harasses and disturbs people.

At this point, you probably have an impression as to what type of person Kurosawa is and it probably isn't a very positive image. He is nowhere near perfect; he is flawed in many aspects. However, as the story further progresses, Kurosawa becomes more likeable and more human. The story becomes more compelling and suspenseful. You'll find yourself eagerly anticipating the next page, curious as to what'll happen next. The execution of the plot is simply brilliant. He still has flaws as a character, but these flaws only help define his humanity and help us as an audience relate to him.

The supporting characters of the series are also interesting, among them a twisted bitch and a guy with a cauliflower hairstyle who is always trying to warm up to Kurosawa. Though interesting as characters and integral to its plot, it is Kurosawa who is truly the star of this this manga.

The manga appears to be a doujinshi and consequently the art isn't professionally done. That's not to say it's bad - indeed, the art is very well done, with appealing, though somewhat generic character designs and well drawn backgrounds. I have no complaints art-wise and for a manga that wasn't professionally done, I feel that it was done extremely well.

I found the manga really enjoyable and I was quite surprised at how deep it was, considering I picked up this series simply to kill time. I recommend you pick up this series if you're at an age where you aren't disturbed by sperm shots (which really is as sexually explicit as this manga gets). Don't be fooled by its title or the themes it deals with! It is very worth your while.

This is a story of mistakes and redemption and the choices made between them, and contains the best and worst of human conditions, discovered by the characters in the unfolding of history.

It's possible that giving a 10/10 on everything could be seen as kind of biased on my part, but I really, really think this is an amazing piece of art that should be read by as many people as possible. Maybe it's just that I encountered this manga at the right time of my life, but either way, even if it's not perfect objectively speaking, it's an amazing manga that deserves a chance.

First, the art is absolutely marvelous. Probably the part I enjoyed the most about this. Every single page is beautiful, and it was kind of difficult for me to keep a good pace, ... because I just couldn't stop admiring how well done this is. It's funny how the colored pages are just "meh", while the normal pages are the best. As a side note, I loved the way hands were drawn. I'm not very sure why that detail caught my attention so much (since the manga in general has really good drawing), but it just did.

I started reading this so that I could have a good laugh at how ridiculous some stories can be, and ended up being completely hooked. The story really does start looking like a Death Note parody (I bet it was intentional, by the way), and then it takes a route that I just wasn't able to predict. I also cried quite a bit at the most dramatic and tension-filled part, which is not something that'd normally happen with manga in my case.

Character development is great. Kurosawa starts being annoying and matures in such an incredible way... I'm not going to say any more, but it was really inspiring. It made me think a lot about my own personal life. From disliking this character, I ended up admiring him in a way. All characters in general are well-developed and just feel so real.

I don't have anything else I could add without repeating myself, so I guess I'll stop here. Hope you guys enjoy this as much as I did.

The premise is perverted, making it look like a comedic ecchi story, and the narrative is parody-infused. You would have the impression that the main protagonist Kurosawa is inspired by the character of Light from Death Note. The way the manga tries to characterize him is done in such manner and ... style that there is seemingly no hope for the story to become serious and go all-out with its parody aspect. Each chapter could have been just Kurosawa preying on a new target for his “meals” and repeat the cycle. The manga could have even just gone all-out in shamelessly abusing the premise for the sake of comedy. However, I was wrong.

They are key characters involved in the progression of the story and Kurosawa’s transformation. They are also characterized well-enough that they don’t feel insignificant to the story while not trying to compensate their personalities. With this change of pace and nature, the readers can be divided into two groups: those who liked the non-serious style more and those who embraced the change and actually think it’s a great thing. I belong to the latter. Unexpected rollercoaster of feelings arise while unfolding the conflict and resolution of Kurosawa’s tale. In a way, it’s a coming of age story about how a person tries to deal with his comfort zone symbolized by the cramped stall that he regularly goes into where he can be truly himself. Onto the theme of the manga which is redemption, it succeeds in its attempt to transform a character beyond hope and forgiveness into a changed person that have properly reflected on his deeds.

While it has developed Kurosawa’s character well, I was hoping that Kitahara got the same treatment too. Little was known about her character background despite being a very significant character in Kurosawa's tale. Not that we are not shown much about her actions and thought process, but its lacking in a way that we don't know much why she acts that way aside from being a victim of bullying. As much as she tries to deny it, she is the same as Kurosawa. When she discovered the existence of Kurosawa’s comfort zone, she tries to use it to her advantage in order for her to let out the inner demons she is struggling with. I’m not going to dive deeper into the issue as its already borderline spoiler territory, but I wished she had more spotlight as a character suffering the same predicament as Kurosawa and not merely a victim on the verge of breaking apart.

Part of the charm of the manga is that the reader will always find something relatable in it. We’ve all experienced the social experience called “school” at a time of our life. Whether you were studying hard to achieve optimum results, goofing around with your friends, excelling in sports or extra-curricular activities, being the victim or the loser in class, experiencing the bliss known as love, or being the all-around aloof guy who doesn’t care about his surroundings, the setting of the manga perfectly encapsulates that atmosphere. While it’s filled with conventional tropes and stereotypes, it cannot be denied that they have a degree of truth and realism in it.

Overall, if you desire an eccentric yet insightful coming-of-age story then this manga is for you. It tackles on several issues well enough that it might catch you off-guard with its initial parody type of a perverted story. It’s consistent despite the changes of the tone of the story midway and it offers you so much more than just your average weird comedic story.

Story 10/10: the story synopsis of OMK is a huge reason why people dont read it. Perverts images of a boy masturbating in a bathroom come to mind quickly and people assume that its way too perverted to like. On ... the contrary the story is very original and entertaining to read. its a short series (only 31 chapters) but it does contain plot twists and a few arcs.

Art 9/10: when i first started reading OMK i hated the art. it looks like the mangaka was just making sketches of each panel. By the last few chapter i adored the originality of the art. It may not be your "average" style of drawing it works perfectly with the series. It complements the story with the simplicity of it which allow the reader to focus more on the characters.

Characters 10/10: the character development in OMK is top notch. The reader can see how the main and supporting characters change throughout the series. Dont be mistaken thouugh, it is still somewhat a school-life manga so you will still see the usually cliche characters: the jock, the bully girls, the fat kid, the loser. You also see a several reversals of the roles of antagonists and protagonists in the series.

Enjoyment 9/10: i honestly did not think i would enjoy the series as much i did before i read it. The main reason why i even read it was because i thought that a manga about a kid masturbating in a girls bathroom was a weird series to be ranked so high in popularity and score. Its a weird concept for a manga but creators did the near impossible and made a masterpiece of a manga.

Overall 9/10: The story is an overall joy to read. While reading it I felt like it was almost real. I would suggest this manga for anyone who is looking for a short series with a lot of character development.

I'm not horribly picky with the manga I read, but every once in a while I truly truly become excited about a manga and with Onani Master Kurosawa, I felt that excitement. The first chapter instantly grabs you (in a slightly perverted way). But if you get past that, you enter a very interesting take on a bildungsroman, with sexual fantasy used as a means to show growth. The story is engaging, caustic, cynical, and features an amazing narrator with a very interesting perspective. Its isn't ecchi, it isn't hentai, its just awesome. A high school story for all of you tired of normal ... high school stories. The content follows a general pattern for stories (so no real surprises), but its execution of the content is beautiful. Give it a chance!
