Both are supernatural themed with elements of horror. Both have a mysterious male lead [though Asou is more light hearted] and have a female assistant that suddenly starts working with them. Both have a company that deals with thesupernatural. Both relate to Japanese folklore. Kanae and Mai have similar personalities, and fall in love with the main leads. Both have arcs talking about dolls, and the main in both are very powerful.

The main character in both stories work as someone's assistant to pay off debt. In Hanako to Guuwa no Tera, the main group work to solve supernatural cases. In xxxHolic, the main group grants wishes in exchange for something of equal value. Obviously, both stories rely heavily on supernatural creatures, but Hanako relies on Japanese lore specifically, while xxxHolic has different kind of creatures. xxxHolic is much longer, but it also has a decent anime adaptation.

Both series cover the stories that people believe to be fiction and how they tie to real life. A bit of horror in both of them, as well as the appeal of the mystery in why these creepy events are that way.

Solving the supernatural mysteries out there and sometimes figuring out that sometimes people are the scariest thing.

Both titles are in the same vein of "action/adventure with a horror twist" that I personally find so enjoyable. The storylines go about their business in relatively similar ways, and you get to see more creepy Japanese monsters and folklore. A fan of one series is sure to enjoy the other.

Both revolve around a man who saves a girl on the verge of being killed by supernatural forces, and then the relationship they develop.

Both are about eerie and unsettling paranormal events. Fuan no Tane (The Seeds of Anxiety) focuses more on instances of paranoia getting the best of people, ghost sightings, urban legends, and so on. Its tone is also very sinister, with only brief glimpses of the horrors each mini-chapter's characters come into contact with. It's very episodic, in contrast to the more linear storyline in Hanako and the Teller of Allegory, which focuses almost entirely on urban legends that become so well known that the legends themselves become personified. While each manga is very different in a lot of ways, someone who enjoys unsettling events in  read more
