The manga is now complete, and well, it was kinda rushed in the last couple of chapters :(
Happiness is a horror manga, tackles the subject of vampires and psychological in a master way. Initially in a school setting the characters are realistic, they act like normal students in front of the dangers and have their own personalities, wills, ways of acting, without being cliché.
The story follows Okazaki, a young man who accidentally turns into a vampire, a shower of tragedy falls in this manga in almost every chapter, with cliff hangers taking your breath away and making you marathon several chapters in a row without

Happiness was what i would consider the pinnacle of good manga. It had a story that was short, sweet, and most of all pack with content. Each chapter asked as many questions as it answered and left me with a vague sense of wonder. To put it simply, it was an incredible experience.
Warning: very minor spoilers Story 7/10 : I felt that the story was quite short featuring few real conflicts. However, it was great seeing the world develop as you slowly see the world become affected by the main character. You see the world shift due to their actions and how the world bites (heh) back. ... This a fairly new manga, and at the time of reviewing, it is only 16 chapters in.
Warning: there may be slight general setting spoilers for the first 16 chapters. If this manga keeps going on its current path, it could be a truly great piece of work, one that I have waiting for years to finally happen. The setup is extremely promising, and has my extremely excited to see where it goes. I'm going to start by saying that this seems to be rather shallowly tagged and summarized. It's about as Shounen as Ajin and Tokyo Ghoul are, which is to say, not at all. They are ... Oct 23, 2016
This is a review counting 21 Chapters.
Warning, minor profanity included. I have read Aku no Hana and I remember being entranced by the story like it haunted me in a way. It had a captivating drive that I could not understand. With Happiness, it's less, but that captivating essence is still there. There is no central plot or story. There is no final goal, there is no happy ending. This is a story where different characters collide and shit goes to hell. There is no good or evil, there is no 'hero' and there is no 'villain'. There is no superhero. Everyone just lives theirs lives as like anyone ... May 1, 2020
Ok, note that i rarely write reviews. I got this manga recommended afrer reading hitsuji no uta. I did not expect anything good, for two reasons.
1)I had read the authors two previus works, aku no hana and mari. While aku no hana ranked as mediocrite to me, mari ranked better in my opinion. 2)It was a vampire manga. Not that i have anything against the gender, simple i dont consider it the best medium for masterpieces. Alas i was wrong. This manga is a masterpiece. From the characters, to the story, adn at some cases even the drawing. SPOILERS ALERT FROM HERE ON So, lets start from the ... Apr 4, 2023
This is what Tokyo Ghoul should be, but never tried.
When I say this affirmation, I'm stating that Tokyo Ghoul has narrative lack of concerning by their own script, thing that doesn't happen in Happiness. The manga is well structured in the beginning and shows us a narrative interesting, self centered (which means that other characters or even the protagonist aren't bigger than the story itself) and with good motivation by every character. The only problem is the lack of pace in the final volumes, leading to a rush story but still is a great conclusion, focusing on what should be focused all the time, ... Nov 3, 2017
Here's my take after reading 33 chapters of the psychological vampire drama Happiness by Shuuzou Oshimi.
The story is about the timorous high-schooler Makoto Okazaki who's the favorite target of the school bullies until one fateful day when he was bitten by the "vampire" Nora who uncharacteristically left him to decide his fate; "living" or dying. Nowadays, every media is saturated with vampires and it has already reached a point that people got tired of the concept. However, you should not let that turn you down with Happiness. My first impression on reading this was "It feels similar to Tokyo Ghoul."; however, reading further, Happiness is no ... Feb 23, 2017
if you already liked Oshimi Shuzo hstuff like Aku no Hana and Boku wa mari no naka, you should read this one too.
since its a Vampire typical manga, I was really didnt look at this one, untill more chapter I read, it proves me wrong. Oshimi Shuzo-san really break a boring Vampire manga in his way. Background and terrain its not Oshimi Shuzo type, the manga itself is all dark and full of shadiness, really suits for the story, and the character progression is the one that made my expectations wrong too. this is a decent manga, and the one that really should make an anime ... “Don’t ever... Leave me alone... Promise me... Let’s just run man... Let’s go where ever the fucking wind takes us...” -The Bipolar Yuki.
A heads up before I start as you can tell by the first quote this manga is definitely nsfw so be weary about that. Another small note is I do hint at stuff that happens in the manga quite a bit so be cautious. Hapiness isn’t the right term to describe this gore fest. Just like the quote the author of this really did whatever he wanted to make you feel pain or just be disgusted. A better term for this manga is Dispair. ... Nov 12, 2017
Over the years the idea of the vampire has been muddled. Through the Twilight series and multiple cheesy to bad films such as Dracula Untold, vampires have grown out of style and lost the sort of magical and tragic mythos that used to surround the monsters of the night. Enter this series, simply called Happiness that delivers on what has the potential of being one of the greatest works of vampire fiction since Anne Rice's vampires series.
Story: 9 The only reason I cannot give this a perfect is because it is still a series with potential, but it has no direct plot yet. Throughout the ... May 3, 2017
At the time I'm writing this review, I've already read 27 chapters.
Despite being quite generic at the start, this manga isn't like you average "vampire-like creature living amongst humans" shounen. Yes, the protagonist is a shy student not so sociable that turns into a supernatural creature. Probably you've seen this a lot. But this manga drives to something different. It's more about interactions and relations between characters than fighting or gore, like others from the genre. "Happiness" is something that the characters don't have, for they are on fucked up situations. And this is good, since give us a feeling of danger and fear. Anyone can ... Mar 10, 2024
Another manga finished by Oshimi Shuuzō!!
He is definitely one of my favorite authors, always with different works and all great. I love how he can turn reading into something very enjoyable with the 3-panel layout per page... You float through an extremely captivating, mysterious, and interesting story, and the layout makes this even easier. It's no wonder that I finish most of his works on the same day I start reading them. And this one, even though I didn't finish it in a day, I read very quickly... I always feel sad when I finish a manga by this author because I know I'm getting closer and ... Dec 19, 2019
In short, it has a pretty normal start (as far as supernatural manga go), from around the middle onwards it gets crazy and ultra dark (minor spoilers(?) below). A story that's definitely worth a read, and superb art.
Story It starts off fairly innocently, reminiscent of Tokyo Ghoul but slightly toned down. It's somewhat of a realistic story on what would happen to a newly turned vampire, with a very dark and twisted... Well twist from the middle of the story onwards. I expected a twisted romance between MC and the vampire girl but all I got was a twisted (not exactly bad) story. So if you're ... Aug 3, 2020
Happiness shares many problems with its own name. It's grand and instantly relatable emotionally, but too broad to mean much of anything in the end.
Put simply, Happiness has too much stuff. Oshimi is certainly talented, and even in as rough a concept as this that talent shines through. But rather than relying on his incredible - and still very much present - ability to write cathartic human conflict, he tries to drag a level of world building and scale too large for him to handle. Secret organizations, various vampires with little to no real involvement in the plot, a cult plotline, all of these are segments that ... Aug 4, 2021
I actually didn't expect anything from this manga because I just wanted to have some read but damn I ended up giving 10/10 for this manga. The story is very well structured, I don't feel like I want more chapters or feel disappointed with the ending or want to protest with any part of the story, at all. I am very satisfied with all of the aspects. Although the fate of some of the characters didn't end well but I think this is the first time I have no problem with it because the storyline is really well made. This made me think like, "The

SPOILERS AHEAD:
Story 6/10 - It all starts like your typical vampire type of story and at the start it does everything you would expect from it. First couple of volumes really feel cohesive but then there's the time skip part... yeah... It pretty much ruined it for me since. Later on it changes to some weird cult/secret organization type of stuff and feels VERY RUSHED last couple of volumes. Art 10/10 - The art is just wonderful. Details are really on point . I really enjoyed the drawings of motion since they were really clear. You can also see some inspiration from Van Gogh when ... Feb 9, 2022
My opinions on this manga shifted back and forth throughout reading it. It started off really strong, the premise was engaging and I was intrigued right away. After that it kind of drags on. Some character deaths seemed like they were meant to be really upsetting, but I found my self not really caring that much because of how little I knew about them. I think that this manga would have been a lot better off fleshing things out a bit and giving more opportunity to learn about the characters and better establish the relationship between them. That being said the artwork carries this manga

Happiness
A manga with a good art and full with sentimentalists emotion of life and with vampires (also that manga is my first physically completed manga collection) Story 8/10 - The story follows (at the first part) Makoto, is a shy boy with problems with bulliyng guys in the school, but then, suddenly a vampire girl appears and ask him if he wants to become like her or die, he choose stay alive like a vampire, and the way that he start to noticing that he became a vampire was in the best Shuzo Oshimi way, he get high by the menstrual blood of the girls (I really ... Overall: A good and enjoyable read.
Character Development: could've been better, I didn’t really feel like there was a real reason the characters became friends. Like they just randomly decided to care about one another out of the blue. Story: Was an interesting read and I enjoyed it for the most part. There were a few moments where I wondered why the characters did what they did. It was understandable for the story's sake but no person would've made the same choices as the character did in the cult arc Art: 10/10. Amazing illustrations and details. The pictures were so deep and vivid, it felt as ... Feb 3, 2025
I confess that I didn't have high expectations, but this ended up being my first manga that I added to my favorites, it simply exceeded my expectations, I recommend it 100%. The evolution of the characters was surgical in terms of changing the feelings you develop for them, creating affection, for example yuki and saku who had great development, I finished reading in 2 days I won't go into so many details, I recommend that you go and draw your own conclusions, maybe you don't agree with me but that's my opinion and I really think it was worth it. This is the first time
