At first, I thought this manga was going to be just like any other forbidden love theme. I didn't think much of it when I saw summaries and pictures but when I actually started reading, I absolutely loved it. The reason is because it's not too romantic. Well, at least not yet. Anyways, I hate sappy, cheesy, overdone romance mangas that have no point whatsoever. I'm sure you do too. This manga isn't like that at all. In fact, Tomoe even hates (like really hates) her at the beginning but they start to soften up to each other even though Tomoe tries to hide it.

This review is meant for people who want to get into this manga and need a lead or are insecure about it because of rumors. Also this is a spoiler-free review that will help the new ones but offer depth to the ones who already read it since the writing implies stuff that can be interpreted.

Kamisama Hajimemashita, oh man there are so many things to say about this. Do you ever feel that you need a change in your life? We all know by now that anime and manga are a really good way to escape reality and enjoy yourself (temporarily unfortunately).

Why did I ... say that? Well, Kamisama Hajimemashita takes that concept literally and presents us a girl who becomes homeless after her dad left home because of debt collectors and ends up in a temple where she can forget her problems temporarily and enjoy the fantasy of being free and independent. A rarity in modern days if you ask me.

Compared to the typical fantasy setting, here we are presented with a set of responsibilities that Manami the main girl has to do in order to maintain her status and overall happiness in that holy temple. The first part presents the new world revolving around the temple and the people/gods which live around it or even in other dimensions. An important lesson that we all know but not usually apply is that sometimes you have to be vulnerable and take a risk helping someone for free not expecting anything in return besides their friendship and trust. Our main protagonist its applying this concept every time she can and this helps her develop as a character and getting to know the enviroment that the fantasy world of the temple offers in the same time. Not to mention that in life you do not succeed every time and this is taken into consideration even here.

What I said above is what the first half is striving for and in my opinion it has done an exceptional job doing. The second half has the same adventures sometimes even befriending people so much to the point of "adopting" them as a familiar. Not going to go in the detail to what a familiar is just because when I read reviews myself I like to have explained the reasons why the plot is good not the plot itself. Also in the second part we catch some glimpses or romance and sexual tension between some characters and as we go closer to the end the manga becomes a full fledged romance and it is executed as amazing as the adventuring fantasy part assuming you read until then.

Now to adress some negative opinions and prove them wrong in order to convince you that they are unfounded. Some say the manga becomes a reverse harem at some point and that is completely wrong because probably this guys can't see the difference between a close friendship and a romantically inducing one. Still here i would like to add that teasing isn't meant to be taken seriously.

About the people who complain about furries and just label anyone watching this as a furry no questions asked. Most of the character designs are inspired from japanese mythology and adapted to catch the eye of the people in this era.

Why is this anime liked mostly by girls? Is it worth watching if i am a guy? The response here is subjective but i would say yes. The thing is that the female lead's personality is fairly simple with some special qualities that are still human like kindness and sensibility which makes female readers relate easier to her. On the other hand the male lead is what girls would imagine to be the dream personality of a possible male partner so it is basically like this manga nailed most of the male traits to suit female readers. I personally find it to be adorable how girls think these days.

Now as a note. I never review anything that is subjective such as paneling drawing quality or pacing. So you have to figure for yourself if this is for you or not. With all this being said I hope I managed to at least make you interested in checking this manga out and if not there is always something that will suit your taste so thanks for reading.

I gotta tell you, I don't really like shoujo manga and animes. I tried, but I found them too clichéd (gah, hate clichés) and mushy and I usually hate the main female characters with such a passion I can't continue with the story. What is up with the annoying love triangles too? Not to mention the art style tends to be so... cheesy or just... weird. Hope this doesn't offend anyone, they're just not to my taste.

First of all, I don't understand why this manga is so underrated. I've read several reviews for this manga and most of them were saying that "something is lacking" and "could've been better". They even compared it to other shoujo mangas that have similar plots, and NONE of them were even as good! Watching the anime of Kamisama Hajimemashita last year left me with lots of questions and excitement that led me here to read the manga. And so, I was really glad that I've finished reading it.

Being able to see Nanami, Tomoe, and Mizuki's journey made me happy as if I was really in the manga. The arcs were breath taking that it didn't even left some holes. It even arrived with the ending smoothly.

Ahhh...a shoujo manga. When one hears the shoujo genre attached to something, some or most may cringe, and it is definitely understandable.

The shoujo genre has become surrounded with tropes and stereotypes for more than a decade now. First encounters have become formulaic, and the romance and character developments have become predictable. But despite the enveloping ideas that surround what is usually (and somehow supposedly) shoujo, there is always a work that swims out of the cliche ocean and climbs up the excellence ship.

Kamisama Hajimemashita is one of those shoujo manga that at face value resembles its predecessors. Girl meets hot guy? ... Check. Hot guy has a rather blatant personality? Check. Girl is cheerful? Check. The shoujo genre checklist can go on, but for 14 volumes now, Kamisama Hajimemashita has proven that it transcends the limitations and expectations the shoujo genre has attached to its name.

How so? Below are the following reasons.

1.) ART
The art is unique. It isn't sloppy, nor intolerable. What makes the art shine is the fleshing out of each character's expression. Suzuki Julietta has a very good hand at that. Reading up to 14 volumes, one will notice how the art becomes more ornate, more vibrant, and more fine. The texture of the backgrounds, the shadows, the shadings...Everything is becoming refined. So many manga rarely retains consistency in the art nor improve as they move along, but Kamisama Hajimemashita becomes more beautiful to read than ever.

2.) CHARACTERS
One may argue that the characters are typical. Tomoe is the same as those bitchy hot guys who are very reliable. Nanami is the same determined maiden who will obviously get heartbroken and chase the guy.

So what more can be expected from these seemingly unoriginal characters??

Well, it's because they do not have a uni-dimensional personality. For instance, Tomoe may be cold, but he can be gentle. When he's worried, he is honest about it. Some may say that he's a tsundere, but that trope does not govern who he is. Nanami, on the other hand, may be seen as a damsel in distress, but she is hardly in distress. She falters realistically, but she stands up with determination and tries to accomplish something in order not to rely on others, specifically Tomoe. As these two main leads grow, their personalities also become pronounced, and different sides of them show. Nanami can be manipulative, and Tomoe can be compromising. Nanami can take care of herself, and Tomoe learns to trust Nanami.

The development does not end between the two main characters. It is also important to note that the side characters in this manga have their important roles and growths with interactions with the main characters. Villains are seen in different lights, and there is nothing more complex than the thinning of who's good and bad. In the end, the shoujo tropes that engulf the characters are merely the tip of the iceberg, a counter top, a topsoil to their being. As the story digs deeper, as adventures become parts of the past, the characters grow on you, and such earned concern becomes a gear to curiosity about how everything, how everyone will turn out in the end.

3.) STORY
Just like the characters, the story has a general aspect that resembles so many shoujo manga, but as aforementioned, something deeper lies underneath the pretentious "simple" story arcs. I myself have come to observe hints left unanswered in every arc, and where the manga is right now (past 14th volume in serialization), every hint has turned out to be a thread in an almighty spider's web of a well-thought-out plot Suzuki Julietta has woven from the start. The answers are still in the process of streaming out the well of wisdom, but the twists are showing, and, boy, does it contend to the speculated predictability I and the other readers might have conceived from the first chapter.

4.) ENJOYMENT
The humor in this manga is timed very well. It does not grow old. Should I say more?

I love the art here. It's very very sharp and mature (not overly cutesy). This story is a great mix of fantasy, action, and romance. The main characters are endearing and I enjoyed watching them grow through their many adventures. I thought pacing was great. Each volume had a lot to offer and held my attention. I enjoyed all of the side characters and their stories. Often when I'm reading manga series I find that things sort of go awry towards the end. I was glad to see that didn't happen here, and the ending was very satisfying. Time to watch the anime!

Kamisama Hajimemashita has always been one of those anime that I always wanted to look into, but could never get quite into. The anime couldn't hold me, but I was pleasantly surprised when I decided to read the manga on a whim.
Kaisama Hajimemashita seemed like one of those pretty-boy supernatural reverse-harem manga, and while I am down for any media featuring both the supernatural and handsome members of the opposite sex, very rarely do I find and works in the sub-genre to be of much substance. Kamisama, however, was an exception. The manga is a romantic comedy, and what joys me the most is that ... it is actually pretty dang funny! Tomoe, the fox-spirit and our male lead, has a personality in stark contrast to that of our female lead, the girl-turned-god, Nanami. The two constantly bicker and clash and get on each other's nerves, all in the most comedic of ways. The rest of our supporting cast's interactions are all funny-bone tickling as well.
In case any of you are wondering about the "romantic" half of this manga's genre, it does fine in that aspect as well. The main couple is of Nanami and Tomoe, if you haven't picked that up yet. One of my favorite aspects of the manga is that it does not meander away its chapters, and have its protagonists absent-mindedly blush at each other, wondering just what exactly is the emotion stirring within their heats at the moment. No, Nanami knows who she's fallen for comparatively quickly, and much of the show features her trying and hoping that her crush shall reciprocate her feelings. Now, this could become quickly tiresome if handled badly, and would dissolve into a screen tones sludgey mess of a manga about a girl chasing after some guy, but it doesn't. Kamisama Hajimemashita keeps a batch of other motivations and obligations within Nanami's character, which keeps her from becoming stagnant and annoying.
The art of the manga is decent, regular shojo fare. I feel like mentioning that the author is rather adept at portraying emotions and creating mood at times of climax, however. Also, unlike some shojo protagonists (hi Honda), Nanami's facial features never seem to be slipping off her visage like a yolk within an egg white, which is always a plus for me.
The plot takes the form of arcs, mainly, some running for maybe three chapters, while some clocking in at probably twenty or so. While the longer arcs can get a smidge tiresome on at times, uncommonly does the story spend its time doing something that advances neither the plot nor the characters, and he arcs each end strongly and triumphantly, making the payoff for reading the arc high. Kamisama Hajimemashita has an overarching story, as far as I can tell at time of writing, and it is rather soundly ad logically strung together, and clamors for advancement.
Overall, while Kamisama Hajimemashita is by no means an original concept, I'd recommend that one at least reads the first five or so chapters of the manga. You may dislike this manga if the style of comedy is not your thing, or if you find the characters dislikable, but if both those things do not turn you off after reading the first bit, siege on ahead, my friend! This manga is all sorts of wonderful if supernatural romance is your thing, or even if it isn't!

Story:

The plot is nothing that hasn’t been done similarly before (ie. Inuyasha); however, even with that being said it’s still compelling and interesting. Unlike in other shoujo manga where the romance is practically shoved into your face in the beginning, or a few chapters there’s epiphanies of feelings going on, this takes its sweet time to develop the characters and their feelings. While Nanami falls for Tomoe at a regular interval, as expected, however the feelings aren’t immediately reciprocated. Which brings freshness to the story, instead we’re given banter between the two main protagonists (border-lining hateful resentment from Tomoe in the beginning), and a ... slightly one-sided pairing, we see the relationship of two characters unfolding slowly in front of our eyes which is great to read. There is very much a master-servant relationship and the idea is how to breach such confines, especially concerning a human god and a fox yokai, a relationship that would be taboo.

The romance is a slow build-up interweaved with the character development. Little by little the past is unravelled and we learn more of each character. There’s a lot of hesitance and unwillingness coming from Tomoe while Nanami completely accepts her feelings and respects Tomoe’s decision in the matter. She isn’t afraid to show affection yet doesn’t expect Tomoe to jump into the bandwagon. Tomoe’s feelings are very much implied and slowly shown (acts of kindness or jealousy).

The plot itself has a slice-of-life feel, while there is an over arcing story it isn’t fully detailed or explained yet (so an antagonist is revealed but his motives concerning Nanami isn’t clear as of yet) . As of now we see the protagonists in a sort of event-by-event manner, sometimes it’s simply school drama or personal issues, others it revolves around demons or spiritual manners. The story doesn’t completely revolve around deities and demons, while it is a significant and predominant aspect, we are given more issues about each characters.

Characters:

The character growth is at a good pace alongside the romance. Tomoe is regarded as a cynical, spiteful and distrustful fox that slowly softens as he spends more time with Nanami; however, his quick tongue is always maintained in the story and he never loses his cynical view on life.

Nanami is very interesting; she’s a poor girl who happens to stumble upon a man who makes
her a deity. From the get-go you know she hasn’t much fortune in life but she fights her heart out to do what is best. She has an independent attitude but because of her naivety of her duty she has to rely on Tomoe a lot. While she is not physically strong she has a strong will which is shown brilliantly in the manga. Her certainty in her feelings is what drives the manga, in the beginning she’s confused but as the story progressed she became confident in her own heart.

For the two main characters they might not be unique in originality but they are presented in a dynamic way which makes the reading all the much better. We get to know them more and more as the story progress and we see them grow – and they don't simply maintain the same outlook or personality that they had from the beginning.

Overall: 9/10
The art is gorgeously drawn, each character’s emotions are conveyed beautifully on page and we’re given many locations and not simply one backdrop. Enjoyment wise it’s easy to get sucked into the story, it does lull at some chapters, but overall it’s worth the slow pace. There’s a good amount of hilarity and drama to keep anyone going. This manga skips the melodrama and it gives us two individuals coming from two very different backgrounds trying to figure each other out. That’s really the crux of the story: two people getting to know each other and making sense of it all.

Before I started reading the manga, I watched the anime, which was simply filled with great character development. It leaked on story, though, so I decided to read the manga. I am definitely not disappointed. The manga story later on focuses on romance, but not in a cheesy way. I can't say everything I want about this manga or this will be seven pages long. Short version: read it, it's good.

If the art isn't your style, I'd suggest watching the anime then starting off where the anime ends (approx chapter 65) cuz the art improves DRASTICALLY as the manga continues.

The characters are all so lovable, the story is interesting, and the central love story is one of the best I've read. The whole world is so comforting, I was so sad to leave the story behind, but the ending was so good so I can't complain.

Read it, it's mostly sweet romance mixed with funny ...

When you first read the summary you think....isn`t this like a typical shojo manga? But as you read it no its not! I'm so angry at myself for starting this manga while it's still ongoing. I initially enjoyed the anime adaptation, and figured I'd finish off the story with the manga. This was a surprisingly enjoyable shoujo manga. The forbidden love theme has been done so many times before, but the way the author added youkai (demons) and the cute relationship between the two main characters made it enjoyable to read.
