A young boy gets saved from drowning by a mermaid but, according to mermaid law, if a human sees a mermaid's true form, both have to be killed. The only solution to the problem is for him to marry her. But can they keep her secret from being found out?
Seto no Hanayome was one of the first manga I've ever started to read and the first manga I've witnessed to fall into the Translation Hell.
Just a little backgroud info: the original Japanese publishing ended in 2010 and sadly, it wasn't licensed by any western company to release an official English version. Quite average story so far, back in the days it was the industry standard. Few committed groups started to translate it but the amount of fishy puns (pun intended) and overall ridiculous difficulty of language made their effort really overpowering. Drops were frequent but there were always some others to continue. Well, it
went like this until 2011 then all the projects died. Seto no Hanayome went into my On-hold list at 60/76 chapters and I was sure, it will stay there forever. After 8 long years I've spent sobbing and pressing F5 everywhere (might be some slight exaggeration here), the project is finally finished. Back to the review.
Story: 7/10. Heartwarming and fun story about the differences between normal- and merperson, also everyday people and yakuza. There aren't any big cliffhangers of plot twists, you get what you expect from the start of the show. It stays really funny from start to finish but lot of the jokes are hard to understand without cultural background.
Art: 7/10. Bouncing between normal and SD character designs, Kimura-sensei was able to express a wide range of expressions with his style. I really liked Sun-chan's dead fish eyes (pun intended) and Nagasumi's face when Masa-san was around.
Character 6/10. Every character was unique but there was barely any development through the story.
Enjoyment 8/10. This is the part where it shines. Almost every chapter had a wtf moment, the tsukkomi action was on point, the returning gags were never old.
Overall 7/10. It seems low at first but I'd recommend it without the slightest doubt for any gag manga fan. This score would have been around 8 or even a 9 in 2011 but so many years have passed and so many great series were born that I have to be real here. Still, it's having an unique charm which made me reread the whole story first when the last chapter came out, to fully enjoy the ride. Go for it, you won't regret it either.
I know untill now all my Review were really bad, but this one i will give good review.
story i would say it is pretty good, well acually, the way the main character Nagasumi get treated is kind of sad, always get blamed on somthing that was misunderstanding. and he slowly gets feeling for San.
The art is really funny, the expression that comes out from people is unique, (i like san's expression the most) i gave art a 9 because there is some of the art that is kind of bit similar to some other mangas, but overall i think the art was great.
have many things to say for the character but, Nagasumi is unlucky, his monky like friend is annoying, and the people who are related to San are really hm... what's the word? ... overloving San, or i could say overly in charge.
This is so hilarious, the way Nagasumi try to protect San's secreat and the way he trys to survive they are just so funny, and San's expression would also be enjoyment since it is funny, i can't explain it with words (since i lack english) i laugh at this manga a lots of times. overall this manga is great
I recommend people to read this, IF you like supernatural, romance, and comedy
