Both series feature humanity being pushed to the edge of extinctions by an insectoid race. Both feature a main character who has been named a traitor and been removed from their previous status of being extremely skilled and respected individuals. Both feature humanity building new cities to be away from the 'bugs' and both feature the main character entering an academy city. Both feature some kind of teams which students join and compete against other teams in. Both feature the main character being involved with the worst team. The similarities between these two series are uncanny and are definitely similar. The main difference as of yet is that the main character is an instructor instead of a student and is well known for being a traitor. read more 

Both have similar feel as a dark reality of death that hang over the peaceful lives of the characters. The protagonist in SAO is also very similar to layfon as they are both socially awkward, are self-critisizing, have a dark haunting past, and extrememly overpowerly strong. 

Both novels have a futuristic school setting with a protagonist who hides his true strengh.
