Both manga show you something really sweet and innocent, but both titles hide something darker underneath their sugar coating.

Cute little girl doing her own thing in a fantasy world. Kuro has more horror elements to it though.

Manga about pets with cute artstyle, but the cat in question is weird and supernatural.

Well, apparently these black scary monsters invade earth regularly, here's one set it the 20th (perhaps) and one contemporary. In both manga there's a calm and peaceful existence until those pesky monster arrive and eat everyone. Kuro is way better though, but Chikyuu no Houkago is perhaps a bit funnier.

It’s done by the same mangaka and has the same unique vibe where cute and surreal, calmness and the terror coexists in ways you couldn’t imagine.

I can't say too much without delving into spoilers for Kuro, but they have similar plots. However, Mieruko-chan is a lot more focused on comedy, which Kuro doesn't use often.

-Many scenes about cutesy, everyday life between the two main characters -There's a dark and underlying dread about both series (Kuro's is more about the backstories of the characters and the situation of the town while HSL's is straight yandere style) -Some mystery elements (though Kuro's is built over the whole series while HSL's is more confined to numerous, smaller mysteries that are solved with each chapter) -Small, tightly-knit cast of main/side characters, all with their own arcs and backstories (Kuro has about seven characters throughout the majority of the plot) -Adorable, black haired lolis -Yanderes (HSL goes for the Yuno Gasai approach while Kuro's is much softer)

Both about a girl and her companion who's cursed. Both have the girl somewhat unknowing about her family and the cursed world.

What if you instead of huge walls, had thin lines painted with white flowers, instead of a king and different fractions had a few townsfolk who's trying to sort things out, and instead of a group of guerrilla soldiers had a girl - with her cat? Things get quieter, but the monsters are just as frightening.

Both are about living side by side with eldritch things.

Both have cute art style with a dark premise for its story. The pacing is also kind of similar in terms of revealing the mysteries and the gradual development of characters' relationships. The main characters for both titles are children and they have accompanying "animals" - a "cat" in Kuro, and a "bat" in Hitsugikatsugi no Kuro.

Both series feature a lonely little girl who lives with an adorably monstrous companion. While many cute moments are featured there are also many moments reminding everyone exactly how alien these creatures are.

Petite girl with a dark secret.

Kuro is pulling many of the similar strings as Mushishi does, the codependency of spirits that can turn against you, and supernatural phenomena. Even if Kuro is set in a Europe-like world it's still got the same cozy/scary feeling.

If you're a fan of Studio Ghibly you should definitely check out Kuro, it's a real gem, and the art and storytelling is straight out from something like Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. its even in color!
