Both of these are excellent short story collections with some connections between chapters (in Nickelodeon, some chapters get sequels and in Daidai there's a slight storyline going on involving a policeman and a girl who claims to be fighting aliens), filled with black comedy and dashes of surrealism.

Blood diver Ringo and the fishbowl man is better known, but Daidai is by far better, so if you enjoy the humor mixed with tragedy be sure to check it out as well.

I love how both Abe Youichi and Dowman Seiman can indulge so freely in their hang ups and still do great art. The obsession for school girls, sea creatures, mafia, quirky nerds and whatever turns the reading experience to an orgy of tropes, like when ordering junk food at a high class restaurant; you're amazed that you crave for more even after the fourth serving... Abe Youichi and Dowman Seiman have a similar way of crafting bitter sweet stories which makes you both happy and sad at the same time. Daidai is a must if you enjoyed Voynich Hotel.

Short, grotesque stories that are equally tragic and funny. Daidai might have a tad more subtle humor, but give it a chance.

Plots of these two mangas take place in one town that has become the center of bizarre, supernatural phenomenons. Both of plots are filled with creative action sequences and surreal at times humor.

Collections of short stories of a surreal, dream-like nature in an otherwise contemporary setting with a subtly melancholic art style. Daidai wa is, however, a lot darker than Ashizuri.

Abe Youichi and the early works of Usamaru Furuya shares many similarities in the obsession of tragedy and finding the comedy in it. If this is your cup of tea then by all means go ahead and drink it, but don't blame me if it's salty.
