Synopsis

Punpun Onodera is a normal 11-year-old boy living in Japan. Hopelessly idealistic and romantic, Punpun begins to see his life take a subtle—though nonetheless startling—turn to the adult when he meets the new girl in his class, Aiko Tanaka. It is then that the quiet boy learns just how fickle maintaining a relationship can be, and the surmounting difficulties of transitioning from a naive boyhood to a convoluted adulthood. When his father assaults his mother one night, Punpun realizes another thing: those whom he looked up to were not as impressive as he once thought.

As his problems increase, Punpun's once shy demeanor turns into voluntary reclusiveness. Rather than curing him of his problems and conflicting emotions, this merely intensifies them, sending him down the dark path of maturity in this grim coming-of-age saga.

The pacing felt like Breaking Bad’s pacing. The start is a little slow, but it builds up from there. Towards the end it just kind of got insane. It was amazing. And I could relate to so many of the characters in the manga. This manga felt to me like it came into being out of my own brain, because a lot of the thought patterns of the characters were my own thought patterns. Every character felt so distinctly different from each other. It was almost effortless the way he portrayed each character so well. I felt like by the end of the manga, I ...

Mixed Feelings
Amazingly written, and unfortunately unrecommendable to both people in my personal life, as well as people online.

A tragically beautiful story that does not hold back when displaying the horrors of depression, isolation and abuse. Goodnight Punpun is the kind of manga that you will struggle to get through, but be very grateful that you did.

I feel that it is an important piece of art that would be very helpful to a lot of people, specifically men that are around the same age as punpun towards the end of the story. For anybody that is going through mental health struggles, seeing this all from the various ...

The story is difficult to follow, with temporal jumps and tone changes that leave the reader lost. Also Punpun and secondary characters lack depth and development, making it hard to connect with them. The conclusion is abrupt and unsatisfying, and make me hate more the characters. Punpun is a hard-to-connect-with character due to his vague personality and lack of charisma, because his lack of emotional response to intense situations is frustrating. Punpun shows no significant growth or change and his self-pity can be exhausting. Besides, Aiko is an underdeveloped character with poorly explored motivations and feelings, she's portrayed as an idealized girl stereotype without ...
