Both Kono Oto Tomare and Tsukikage Baby are based on traditional Japanese performance arts. Kono Oto Tomare is set in a modern day highschool, and focuses on Koto music. Tsukikage Baby is set in a rural township and focuses on a traditional performance art, Owara. The performance arts form a backdrop for both manga, which are primarily character drama filled with themes of friendship and romance.
Two manga focused on traditional Japanese folk dancing (Tsukikage Baby) and poetry games (Chihayafuru) with hints of romance scattered here and there. The main characters are high school girls and boys in both manga.
